i hope not.
i don'tknow what the 12/12/12 thread is and i think i am better off not knowing.:what:

Hmmmm, my DD is in Bergen County. If you want to pm me a town I can see what I can do if it's not super far from where my daughter is house/dog sitting.

Oh man, how dear are you? I thought I'd posted earlier that she was in Nutley. How about let's see how things go tonight, alright? If needed, I will absolutely pm you. I don't think, though, that your DD is in a great place either; apparently the storm's eye has changed a bit and is now headed directly into that area...

This is so frightening. Just so frightening.

I'm wondering if we're going to start seeing more and more superstorms like this. (I will STILL stay away from the 12/12/12/ thread...)

LOL...

Was talking to my DD (21 year) at college a couple hours away; concerned about the "storm" and the world ending...she said something about all we needed was earthquakes...and before I knew it, I said well, we had a couple of those on the west coast...someday, I will learn to keep my mouth shut..
now she's freaking out....kids....at least I didn't tell her I was also concerned:what::what:

this is a real live nightmare!!!

You might want to stay away from the 12/21/12 thread, too. ;)

they are having the "calm before the storm" in Cape May, NJ...reporter from The weather channel there now...light winds...

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 175 miles...
280 km...mainly to the southwest of the center...and tropical storm
force winds extend outward up to 520 miles...835 km.

looks like the eye is head directly to the place where jersey, pa, and delaware come to gether.

Which is exactly where I live... Seriously, I've never before fretted over this stuff, especially after enduring much of the same when I lived in Florida. Now, for the first time, I'm scared to death. One of my good friends works for AC Electric & they already have cots & rooms for her & the other necessary personnel. She told me they advised to be prepared for loss of electric 7-10 days for the worst hit areas. She told me she thinks we will lose electric 2-3 days...however, that was before we realized the eye will go right over us. We live right on the river & they're talking 3-4 ft flooding. So yeah, I'm petrified. There's nowhere to go. We're safer in our house than a hotel at this point. I have the necessities but am worried, very worried. Our house has been in the middle of a major remodel & I'm concerned...especially since we converted to gas & the gas main is right at our street corner. Schools are cancelled until Wednesday but it's possible more days will be added. Halloween trick-or-treating is postponed until Saturday 4-7, but that's when my son has his football game - so he's not trick-or-treating this year now. We have everything hammered down, stuff in the garage on stacked cinder blocks, vehicles gassed up. I have suitcases packed & our important docs in a portable firebox, plus my special pictures, jewelry & boys' first milestones (teeth, hair lochs, etc) all up high & ready to go. Computers are unplugged even though in surge protectors. All the portable gaming is charged so I don't go nuts with "bored" kids lol.

Praying for us all. I sure hope it slows down as it moves inland but something tells me it's not going to. This one looks bad, like Andrew or Katrina bad.

She's in Essex county, and she says she's about 15 miles from the water, right across from New York (but inland).

I have never been there, and I have NO idea if this is a bad situation or not...

Hoboken is calling for evacuation of all street level apartments. Why just apartments, I have no idea. Mandatory evacuations in Zone A around NYC..Battery Park, etc. Up the Hudson toward Hoboken. She's going to be close and have to hunker down for a few days, but she's not directly on the water. Shew.. Keeping her in my prayers HC. Keep in touch and let us know....

I just remembered: we have some friends on a sailboat who have anchored deep into a creek in NC, south of the Dismal Swamp near Albemarle Sound. They are living on the boat for 18 months and are headed south with their two kids. They have tons of experience and run a charter business, so I know they are being very level-headed and doing the best they can do right now. But, this is a hurricane nonetheless.

Please keep them in your thoughts right now.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND...TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE ALREADY OCCURRING OVER COASTAL
NORTH CAROLINA AND SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA. GALE FORCE WINDS ARE
EXPECTED TO ARRIVE ALONG PORTIONS OF THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST LATER
TONIGHT...AND REACH LONG ISLAND AND SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND BY MONDAY
MORNING. WINDS OF HURRICANE FORCE COULD REACH THE MID-ATLANTIC
STATES...INCLUDING LONG ISLAND...ON MONDAY. WINDS AFFECTING THE
UPPER FLOORS OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY STRONGER
THAN THOSE NEAR GROUND LEVEL.

STORM SURGE...THE COMBINATION OF AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS STORM SURGE
AND THE TIDE WILL CAUSE NORMALLY DRY AREAS NEAR THE COAST TO BE
FLOODED BY RISING WATERS. THE WATER COULD REACH THE FOLLOWING
DEPTHS ABOVE GROUND IF THE PEAK SURGE OCCURS AT THE TIME OF HIGH
TIDE...

NC NORTH OF SURF CITY INCLUDING PAMLICO/ALBEMARLE SOUNDS...4 TO 6 FT
SE VA AND DELMARVA INCLUDING LOWER CHESAPEAKE BAY...2 TO 4 FT
UPPER AND MIDDLE CHESAPEAKE BAY...1 TO 3 FT

BAY AND NARRAGANSETT BAY...3 TO 6 FT
CAPE COD TO THE MA/NH BORDER INCLUDING CAPE COD BAY...2 TO 4 FT
MA/NH BORDER TO THE U. S./CANADA BORDER...1 TO 3 FT

SURGE-RELATED FLOODING DEPENDS ON THE RELATIVE TIMING OF THE SURGE
AND THE TIDAL CYCLE...AND CAN VARY GREATLY OVER SHORT DISTANCES.
GIVEN THE LARGE WIND FIELD ASSOCIATED WITH SANDY...ELEVATED WATER
LEVELS COULD SPAN MULTIPLE TIDE CYCLES RESULTING IN REPEATED AND
EXTENDED PERIODS OF COASTAL AND BAYSIDE FLOODING. IN ADDITION...
ELEVATED WATERS COULD OCCUR FAR REMOVED FROM THE CENTER OF SANDY.
FURTHERMORE...THESE CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR REGARDLESS OF WHETHER
SANDY IS A TROPICAL OR POST-TROPICAL CYCLONE. FOR INFORMATION
SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA...PLEASE SEE PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE.

Just to put it in perspective... I know alot of people that work for DuPont's and several that work for PSE&G (the nuclear power plant). DuPont's closed tomorrow, possibly Tuesday as well. I only know of them closing twice - once when I was little & then again on 9/11. They're right on the river. The nuclear power plant is right on the river & I'm really worried about it. We live in the middle of these 2 big entities. Serious damage to either could be catastrophic.

Yikes!! I'm in NY, 10 minutes from NJ and PA!! This may be a bit too close for my comfort!!

NOW you're scaring me...

Weather channel said winds could have a powerful effect as far away as Chicago and possibly even New Orleans. Wow.

JerseyGirl- You are in my thoughts and prayers. Please stay safe! All of you dear Ws'ers are in my thoughts and prayers. Gosh, it will be hard to sleep tonight worrying about ya'all.
