Wondering if there is another purpose behind cutting down the trees and if developing the island had been considered before the murders?
Might further evidence be found/seen when the area is cleared?

Considering that Elizabeth used to go on tree-cutting ventures with
her father, it seems ironic, but fitting somehow...
imo.

I can only hope and pray that LE had thoroughly searched the area before they broke ground.

There has to be some kind of oversight on this project - this is public land, after all, so the City has to have some kind of control over it. JMO. I don't understand why any changes to the original plan (such as building four gazebos and a shelter instead of just one gazebo, for example) aren't being discussed in a public meeting.

I fear that if there isn't some transparency in this matter very quickly, this memorial may divide rather than unite the community. JMO. Something about this doesn't feel right to me.

I feel horrible for what happened to Lyric and Lizzie, and it's great that the park and trail have been renamed. But all of this other stuff seems unnecessary IMO.

TY Marilynilpa, I completely agree with you! Doesn't feel right to me either.

Great comment 3CK!

This certainly is not an apples-to-apples comparsion, as Lyric and Elizabeth were murdered, but several years ago, during a practice football session in our community, lightening struck the field. One high school senior was killed and many suffered severe injuries, burns, kidney problems, etc. The family of the child killed directly by the lightening strike of course suffered much agony of losing their son. But, they did not tear down the football stadium nor did they did not demand that people be fired for negligence. Near the stadium, they simply planted a beautiful young oak tree and had a bench with a memorial plaque placed near the near the tree so that when that tree is grown it will provide shade for the bench and be a beautiful reminder of a young man whose life was taken much too soon and so tragically.

I understand the Collins do not want their daughter forgotten, but I think a brainstorming session that was announced in advance by radio, newspapers, posters, pastors announcing it at churchs, etc. so that the members of the community would have been better prepared and INFORMED could have perhaps come up with a better solution that would have served the entire community in a more appropriate and less antagonizing, in-your-face decision.

Fantastic post Boots! :). How sad for that young man and his family. Breaks my heart. I wonder how long after his death that plans were made for a memorial? Or how the money was raised? He has a peaceful and stately memorial...so simple, yet beautiful and tasteful.:moo:

IMO, angels park seems like a three ring circus in comparison. :moo:

I agree, Angels Park is nice. I am curious as to how these changes will affect the real estate values in the area around Meyers Lake now. I'm quite sure anyone trying to sell a home in the area would be very pleased with the changes, perhaps. The sounds of the interstate may deter someone seeking a quiet place of solace. Real estate developers may find opportunity to build new housing - not real sure about that since it is a very small area. Probably not much room for more houses. Something to think about though.

Great points! :seeya: I wonder about proper lighting. A park with all the upgrades mentioned could become a vandal's dream. Most parks are "closed" from dusk to dawn. I wonder how Angel's Park will be protected. By automatic lighting, like on highways? Or with cameras? And how will it affect surrounding citizens' property?

Again, wondering if park development was ever considered before the girls deaths?

Are you hinting about a hidden agenda by someone hoping to run for election?
Reminds me of that series, The Killing. Complicated characters/ plot...shocking finale. People covering for bad people. Ugh.

Our one property has 60 plus year old trees on it. No one is going to touch that except Mother Nature.

As for the homeowners surrounding the lake, I'd be po'd too. Older growth, blocking of sound & sight of I380, just torn down/gone, would just sadden me then get me po'd.

I understand the homeowners, the taxpayers and the plans for the memorial. So I'm torn. Sucks anyway you look at it. I think it was a great plan but it was for those grieving over the girl's deaths. They need a place to grieve, I only hope I should be afforded that honor if in the same situation. I know in our business taking away old construction and building new sometimes affects someone but we try to minimize it due to good weather 3/4 of the year to do so. Takes a while sometimes. I imagine in Iowa, you get started when the ground is almost thawed and keep working until the next freeze or snow comes in the winter. It's been years since I lived in OH. brrrrr

To change the subject some, there's someone(s) who did murder Elizabeth & Lyric & they need to be arrested, charged and sentenced.

I had forgotten that DM's mom lived on University. That JJB posted on meetme that he liked hanging out on Universerty Ave., that I remember reading. Now I can't remember how I got into it to read it or else his account has been deleted. oy vey, now I have to go thru my old info bookmarked....Besides being a RSO now since Jan. and his victim was a 12 year old and JJB saying he was a cousin to the girls, he wanted to go search for them at one time & was friends with R Lynch, his friend, who was missing a few days before the girls were reported missing (no word on when he returned) Interesting comments on JJB's old fb that is gone since his release as a RSO.

Don't know what I'd do as I feel for them all.

Dan facing all of the charges will be telling and since they have reinforced his charges, it will be interesting what he and Jason get. Jason's trial is 4/29. Dan's is in May for drugs & also 4/29 for Misty DV assault only in two different counties. Hopefully, these cases aren't continued again...get them over with. jmo

Sorry for the babble. I finished my taxes this afternoon. I'm relieved...

Is there a grand jury conviened?

Great remarks and insight, as usual! It sure is appreciated. :rocker:

If anyone wants to sketch out what's going to be added to the park, here's the crude beginning of a 3D model. The trees are not scaled correctly, but the land proportions are correct. I added the 200 feet marker to give a sense of scale. I'll add information and post renderings if I know where to put everything.

What is the diameter of the gazebos ... 12 feet? ... 20 feet? ... and there will be five of them? ... where are they located? ... will the three or four granite benches be on a path or in a circle? ... where is the brick wall? ... any additional buildlings? ... so many questions.

Trees, wildlife habitat, sustainability, conservation, bird sanctuary, erosion, noise barriers ... all things that have to be addressed when renovating a 4 - 6 acres Island in a manmade lake.

Angels Park reminds me of a conversation I had with my daughter when she was eight years old. I pulled the car into an angle parking only spot and she said "You can't park here. It says angel parking only." I had no idea that she still believed in angels.

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -
Construction has been underway for the memorial inspired by the murders of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins for about a month.

But the project to revamp the island at Meyers Lake in Evansdale has caused concerns for residents who live nearby.

Neighbors have been frustrated because they believe the site looks like a war zone of sorts. And they're worried about the impact construction will have on existing wildlife.

I found this pic of the island before, zoom in

Meyers Lake/Angels Park

Located at the South end of Elmer Avenue. This park offers a shelter with enough picnic tables to comfortably accommodate 75 people, electric service, water, modern restrooms, 2 grills, boat ramp, fishing and lots of playground equipment for children of all ages. Additional picnic tables are scattered throughout the area. The park is also part of the Evansdale trail system, so bring your sneakers and go for an exhilarating walk or bike ride after your picnic.

Pics also on link, looks to me the island was dense and very natural.

There is nothing in the City Council minutes about plans for the park. I searched back to Feb 6, and there were none. On, or about, Feb 6, City Council approved a memorial on the manmade Island at Meyers Lake. The Island was a natural wildlife habitat and nesting area; a sustainable ecosystem unto itself.

The Island was clear cut. Work apparently started during a snow stown, a couple of culverts were dropped into the lake, dirt was dropped onto the culverts, a bulldozer crossed that dirt road then the Island was clear cut. The tree stumps need to be removed, but erosion is a consideration.

The group that has clear cut the Island needs plans and renderings of their proposal (per recent article). This proposal is late coming, as one of the City Councillors has said that he understood that 1-2 of the 4-6 acres park was going to be used for the memorial, one that included a gazebo and a two bronze statues. To clear cut 6 acres of land for this memorial is somewhat astounding - along the lines of shocking the community and city council.

That fishing dock must be one of the two docks that was removed in July.

Thanks Otto for searching. :rocker:

As soon as the bulldozers were on the move, I started looking for the plans - pretty much in shock that there appeared to be none. A renovation to six acres of public land needs an approved plan.

I've been surprised to read that the planning committee needs someone to make the plans. Did City Council carte blanche grant control of the land to a public interest group?

It's like the cart is so far in front of the horse that the horse doesn't know what it's pulling.

"Neighbors have been frustrated because they believe the site looks like a war zone of sorts. And they're worried about the impact construction will have on existing wildlife ...

Blue Spruce and Oak trees
[the planners must have lots of money, have they factored the cost of the pedestrian bridge - no one wants stagnant water next to culverts that don't even touch the water] ...

Frickson and Staebell said the best option was to get rid of most of the trees and plant healthy trees in their place.

Both said because of the frost, it's been difficult to clear out the tree stumps, but they hope the tree stumps will be removed by the end of the week
[what's this about ravines on the Island?],"

Patience is a virtue :) reading the entire article is quiet interesting.

We had a rather amusing incident a couple of years back where a woman and her pimp dragged another guy into the courthouse and threw down several bags of fake meth on an assistant DA's desk, demanding they arrest the guy for fraud because he didn't sell them the product they paid for...
