I remember reading that the pig farm was searched due to speculation on SM

Hmmm. I seem to remember hearing something about that too. I don't follow on SM, so I don't know what is speculated there. I found this, though:

"Certainly, there are a number of rumors that are circulating here within the community, and we're trying to squash those rumors as much as possible or validate them as much as possible," said Special Agent Richard Rahn of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Dozens of officers and federal agents have spent days chasing down leads.

One took investigators and a canine search crew to a field in Deep River, IA. Another tip sent investigators combing through a hog farm. Both leads turned up dry.

Search intensifies for missing University of Iowa student

Mostly just theories since day one other than a few LE statements. We are just a few hundred posts away from someone thinking the perp logged into her laptop and finished a bibliography and footnotes on any papers that she had to finish.
HAHAHA! This one provided the comic relief I needed... I hope the perp knew if it was supposed to be in MLA or APA style! Hahaha!!!

Well, law enforcement was quoted as saying that the searches they were conducting, not just at the farms (there was at least one location in town near a softball field) were based on tips.

No reason to assume that all tips originate with a phone call. Tips also come in the form of data transmission analysis. For example, if police were able to locate her phone and fitbit, that would provide a general search area, such as the farm area 15 miles South of Brooklyn.

Wouldn't the digital data also be a tip, or clue?

Definitely agree. To get the warrant, they had to have probable cause to search it. I wonder if her phone pinged from that area, or her phone/computer showed she searched those addresses recently

I've read a couple of articles that said they haven't obtained warrants. Here is one: Hog farm searched, nothing found from Mollie Tibbetts

2. These searches have not required a search warrant; folks are voluntarily allowing police on to their properties.

I guess it could be but that doesn’t seem like the typical use of the word.

Haven’t been on since 8:30 this morning- anyone got a quick run down for me so I don’t have to go back and reread?!! This mama is tired! Lol

This article mentions the use of search dogs.
Investigators search pig farm for missing Iowa college student; FBI gets new tip

BROOKLYN, Iowa -- Investigators say they have searched a pig farm and other places in east-central Iowa near where a University of Iowa student went missing, but have turned up no sign of her. CBS affiliate KCCI-TV reports that the pig farm is near Guernsey, about 15 minutes from 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts' hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa.

Tibbetts was last seen the evening of July 18 jogging near the Brooklyn home of her boyfriend, where she was staying to watch his dogs while he was out of town. FBI officers, accompanied by search dogs, continued their search Thursday evening, acting off a new tip, KCCI-TV reported.

There also isn't any reason to assume that tip means "forensic location analysis of electronic records". I think tip in this situation means exactly what the word tip usually means e.g. someone, called, e-mailed, FB messaged, or offered in a police interview information.

Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Jensen of Dubuque urged residents to “be aware of their surroundings” if they are traveling along Grandview Avenue, noting that it is a popular road among walkers and joggers.

The Sheriff of Poweshiek County, the FBI, and Mitch Mortvedt the spokesman for IDCI haven’t warned anyone to “be aware of their surroundings”. Do they know Mollie’s abductor won’t grab another woman?

UPDATE: Police seek tips on man after reported attack on jogger in Dubuque

Wow. Interesting. Surprised they would go there without a warrant. I’d assume if they thought the information was super credible they would have brought a warrant
