Thomas has also been charged with drugs trafficking. Pressed hashish worth at least one million USD was found on board the trawler Polar Nanoq, where he was a crew member. According to the local news site Vísir Thomas has confessed to the drug smuggling, but continues to deny having murdered Birna. He will remain in custody until the court will hear the case.

The maximum sentence for murder in Iceland is life in prison, which is in practice 16 years. The maximum sentence for the drugs trafficking Thomas has confessed to is 12 years.

Thomas Møller had previously been acquitted of raping an unconscious woman in Greenland

I guess there is no court date listed anywhere??

TIA!

Olsen is charged with beating her repeatedly over the face and head inside the red Kia Rio vehicle, holding her by the throat with great force and throwing her into the water where she drowned. Birna was found with a broken nose and evidence of severe blunt force injuries to the head and face.

These violent events occurred either when the car was parked at Hafnarfjörður harbour or in another unidentified location.

Olsen is also charged for a drug smuggling offence having tried to smuggle 23 kilos of cannabis to Greenland which he had hidden in his cabin on the Polar Nanoq trawler.

Birna’s parents are claiming ISK 10.5 million each, or ISK 21 million in total, and her father is also calling for Olsen to be made to cover her funeral costs.

Olsen admits that she was inside the vehicle he rented but denies murdering her.

Olsen is currently in prison at Hólmsheiði awaiting trial. He admitted in his first interrogation with police that he picked up Birna into a red Kia Rio vehicle. However, he says that he picked up two girls, Birna and one other girl. He admits to driving both girls to Hafnarfjörður, kissing Birna in the backseat of the car and then letting both girls out of the vehicle at a roundabout in the Vallar district of Hafnarfjörður at their demand.

Olsen's fingerprints were found on Birna's drivers licence found in a black rubbish bag on board the Polar Nanoq trawler, where he was a crew member.

Birna's blood was found on Olsen's anorak. When his clothes were tested for forensic evidence it came to light that they had been in contact with a considerable amount of blood, despite the garments having been washed.

The second man who as in the car, who was later released, first reported that two girls were in the car. He later retracted that statement, saying he was so drunk that he had simply repeated what Olsen had told him, having no recollection of events himself.

[h=1]New surveillance cameras added in downtown Reykjavík following murder of 20 year old girl[/h] |May 5 2017
  • [*]The Metropolitan Police is currently installing 25 new security cameras at various locations around downtown Reykjavík. Police has requested permission to install 8 additional cameras. The cameras are being installed in response to the January 14 disappearance of 20 year old local girl, Birna Brjánsdóttir. Birna was found murdered on January 22.

Too few cameras, many don't work properly
The police investigation was slowed down by the lack of high quality security camera footage. Better coverage in downtown Reykjavík would have allowed police to identify and track down the suspect in the case more quickly

Seven members of the Polar Nanoq crew gave their testimony regarding Olsen’s activities in the fateful hours surrounding Birna’s death.

Olsen was described positively by his crewmates as “friendly,” “popular” and “very conscientious in his work.” None of them claimed to have had any special knowledge of Olsen’s whereabouts on that night; he had eaten lunch with other members of the crew and then went off in his rental car, a red Kia. Olsen has admitted to having picked up Birna in that car, but maintains that he had dropped her off alive. A few of the crew members also confirmed having seen him in that rental car, including carrying a wet towel from the car on the pier that night.

The ship’s first mate testified that Olsen had become panicked and hysterical after receiving a text message from a journalist, inquiring about Birna’s disappearance. Olsen had received a text message from his girlfriend around the same time, where he was told that he might be under suspicion in Iceland in connection with the young woman’s disappearance. Olsen’s fellow crew members confirm that he became extremely anxious upon reading the message, no longer capable of eating or speaking. Members of the crew saw it necessary to give him tranquilizing medication to calm his nerves.

In the captain’s testimony, Olsen had been told that there was an engine failure as police SWAT teams were on their way to apprehend him. When he heard the helicopters swarming overhead, he is said to have asked the ship’s cook, “Do you think they’re coming to get me?”

Møller will testify on August 21. He is detained in an Icelandic prison, the delay is due to an unfinished forensic report. He was not present during these hearings.

Despite the main hearings being pushed back, seven of the crew members will be asked to testify tomorrow. However, the crew member originally arrested along with Olsen for the murder will not be among those–he was later cleared of all charges. It is unknown, as of yet, when exactly the hearings will continue.

So is there anyone tweeting this? Or are Iceland courts "closed" to the public?

Olsen has been in custody since January but still proclaims his innocence. His fingerprints were found on Birna's driver’s license, in a black rubbish bag on board Polar Nanoq and her blood was found on his anorak.

Had to look up that word....
anorak
/ˈanərak/
noun: anorak; plural noun: anoraks
1. a waterproof jacket, typically with a hood, of a kind originally used in polar regions.

So besides the crew testifying this week - the trial won't start until August 21st - ?? Is that what I understand correctly?

TIA!

I am so maddened by guys like this who proclaim their innocence in the face of so much evidence. There is really no chance he is going to walk out of an Icelandic court a free man after this.

:bump: up for the trial today!

There are 37 witnesses who will testify in the case, many of whom will come before the court today and tomorrow. Five of the witnesses will be heard on September 1st, including Grímur Grimsson, who led the investigation of the case, and German medical examiner Sebastian Kunz, who performed the autopsy on Birna’s body.

The proceedings began with questioning of the accused. Questioning of his shipmates on the Polar Nanoq, who spent two weeks in detention and isolation during the investigation, will follow. Möller Olsen’s girlfriend will also testify via telephone. The proceedings will take place in five languages: Icelandic, English, Danish, German, and Greenlandic.

21/08 05:33 Thomas describes Friday
Thomas has begun to report on Friday 13 January and informs the court that he has rented a car with other crew members. They took advantage of the day to go for a ride, look at the Kringluna and Smáralind where they were eating. Then went to the gym and went back down to the ship. Thomas claims to have shuttled the other crew in charge of custody in the evening, but he himself went back to the ship. The other officer then contacted him and asked him to pick up himself. He agreed to that and the other officer at the English Pub. "He was pretty full because he had worked in the mountain bike," says Thomas.

21/08 05:37 Lots of drinks at the English Pub
Thomas describes how they drank at the English Pub and got some Jakabom, a drink in which a glass of glass was put on top of a beer mug. The other crew was quite full and went to a long toilet, but he himself sat down at their table and been on Facebook.

21/08 05:42 Went to the American Bar and took a hot dog
Thomas says the other crew was pretty polite and been trying with all the girls he saw. And the other crew attempted to buy a whole bottle of vodka but not received. "He chatted with everyone," says Thomas. Thomas then said he would have wanted to go back to the car but go to the pizza place to eat. "But there was such a long order so I left and was going to get a sausage," says Thomas. He and the other crew agree to get a sausage together.

21/08 05:43 "And then a girl came into the car"
Thomas says that the other crew had a night shift to go for a ride to explore. And it turned out that they drove down Laugaveginn. "Then a girl came into the car and spoke Icelandic." Thomas said to have answered. "We are not a cab," but then the girl spoke English.

21/08 05:48 Said the other man wants a nice time with the woman
Thomas says the girl who came into the car and the other crew talked together, and then the girl fell asleep. Thomas has not talked about two girls as he repeatedly observed in police interviews but only one. They then wandered on their way into Hafnarfjörður, but then the other crew would like to drive and have a little "nice time" with the girl. Based on descriptions, they were located at Vífilsstaðir. Thomas says that he has gone to pee, just walked but allowed the other crew and girl to chat together in peace. He then saw where the other crew drove away on the car and discovered that he did not have the phone. "I do not know how long it took and then he was alone."

21/08 05:51 Said the other crew had been stressed
Thomas says the other crew told him that the girl had lived there close by. He then sat in the driver's seat and noticed that the other crew had been stressed and started to rub his hands. He did not predict more about the girl and they went down to a ship. None of what has been stated in the report now appears in the custody orders.

21/08 05:57 Significantly changed pronunciation, says prosecutor
Mr Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir, prosecutor, asks Thomas why he did not say this in a police report. Thomas said he did not understand the question. Kolbrún says that Thomas has given nine reports to the police and it has not been this way. "Now you think you'll feel like this today?"

21/08 05:59 Says that no one has helped remember
Thomas claims to have been very drunk this night, he did not remember anything and no one helped him. He said the police had kept him awake by entering his prison room every two hours and screaming at him. "Where is she?"

21/08 06:01 "I wanted to help"
Thomas asserts that the police made him stressed and he just wanted to help. Kolbrun prosecutor says that Thomas has kept up with one story from the first questioning. "Why did not you just say you would not?" Thomas says that after being released from isolation, he has calmed down. He has received psychological assistance and the police have stopped coming and it helped him remember what happened.

21/08 06:09 "The police were bad at me."
Thomas says the police were bad at him, she had shown him pictures of something he did not. "She called me all bad names," says Thomas. "They tried to use my girlfriend," he adds. They intended to show her "to show what kind of monster I am". Thomas said that, unfortunately, he was untrue in the report, but the prosecutor seems to have lost his patience and asks him again - why he changed his pronunciation today, why he said there had been two girls in the car and why he had said he had Transported them into Hafnarfjordur where he let them out. "This was your first free account of this," Kolbrún says. "Why has this pronunciation changed so much." Thomas says he was calm when the team was in charge of custody. And now Thomas says he did not meet the other crew after Saturday night until Monday morning. "When I met him on Monday, he told me that they had not been so young these two girls." Thomas says he has not responded properly, but says they have been thinking that two girls had been in the car. This also contradicts all that has been said in the case - the other crew has repeatedly claimed that it was Thomas who brought the story about two girls. Thomas says he has been under pressure on the part of the police.

21/08 06:14 Do not recognize the girl as Birnu Brjánsdóttir
Prosecutor Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir asks Thomas to announce the girl who came into their car on Saturday 14 January. "I'm quite clear that the car in front of us had the brake light and we drove very slowly but I do not remember how the girl looked exactly." Kolbrún quotes video recordings and says that they can not see a car in front of them. "But there was a car in front of us," says Thomas. Prosecutor asks Thomas whether he knows the girl as Birnu Brjánsdóttir. "I have never seen the girl before getting into the car." This also contradicts what Thomas claimed at the police station, where he recognized Birna again. Thomas says that she does not know her - it was a misunderstanding of the interrogations.

21/08 06:21 "I can not say more - I have to fit myself"
Thomas reiterates what he has said before in this incredible report - in which a completely new story appears - that the other crew wanted to have a nice moment with the girl and that they ran away when they stopped near Vífilsstaðir. Kolbrún now asks Thomas how long they have been away. "How was the other crew when he came back." Thomas reiterated that the other crew was excited when he returned - he had rubbed his fingers. He then sat in the driver's seat and drove back down to a ship. Kolbrun now asks him for the package that Thomas said he had gone and delivered. "I had to meet this person and let him have the package." Kolbrún asks if everything has been pre-determined. "Not quite," replies Thomas. Kolbrún does not answer this answer and asks again. "We were going to decide this jointly," says Thomas. "I can not say more about this. I have to fit myself," he continues.

21/08 06:25 Kolbrún is working hard on Thomas
Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir, prosecutor, is now applying to Thomas Thomas hardly, and is responsible for the timing. And asks him what was in this package, which he claims to have delivered on Saturday morning. "I can not say that." Kolbrún then asks how big the package was. "I can not say. I do not want to say more about this." Defender Thomas seizes them and says Thomas does not want to comment on this.

21/08 06:27 "What did you do with your clothes?"
Kolbrún asks Thomas what he did to the clothes he was on Saturday night on January 14th. "We're watching video recordings that you go on board at 11 and then come back and then new clothes." Thomas claims to have had to change clothes because there was a bad smell of them, probably eel. "Why did the clothes go?" Asks Kolbrún. Thomas can not quite answer exactly, claiming to have seen some brown in the rear seat of the red Kia Rio car.

21/08 06:36 Can not say where he was in the morning
Kolbrun continues to ask about the eel when Thomas has noticed her in the car. He continues to say that the other crew was very stressed and excited. "His eyes were very open," he says. Kolbrún now asks about where he traveled between 7 and 11 when no idea where the Kia Rio car was. "I can not say that," says Thomas, who always looks forward to the opening of a dummy in a courtroom to prevent him from being photographed. The prosecutor now asks him about the hour after eleven o'clock. He claims to have bought toothpaste but did not find it right. The prosecutor asks him what he has been doing at a scene at Óseyrbrabraut where he is seen on a security camera. "I was eating a sandwich," Thomas replies. "I ate calmly," he continues.

21/08 06:39 Hardly desirable to eat sandwiches in a crash accident
Kolbrun now asks Thomas to see him clean the red Kia Rio car and why he has been so long? "Was that hard to get rid of?" Asks the prosecutor. "Yes - I caught her with a towel," says Thomas. The prosecutor said it was difficult to believe that it was so bad at first that it was a pleasure to eat a sandwich inside the car. Kolbrún says police investigation has revealed that there was a lot of blood in the car. "I did not notice any blood," says Thomas.

21/08 06:43 "Found no red color"
Kolbrun asks Thomas to go to the blood and how he tells him that blood from Birna has been found in the car. "Have no explanation for that," says Thomas. Kolbrún now asks why there was blood from Birna on his lap. "Thomas says it's up to him to hide another crew's return and a shirt from him." Kolbrún asks what shirt. "I do not know - I have so many cool tops. He was either blue or gray. " Thomas claims to have cleaned his friend's wool and told him that it had come to her.

21/08 06:45 She said she had little interaction with the girl
Kolbrún asks Thomas now to communicate with the girl who says he has come into the car, whether he has anything touched and why there was a DNA found on Birna's shoes found at Óseyrarhöfn, where Thomas said he had a sandwich. He had no explanation for it.

21/08 06:46 Be dressed on chest
Kolbrún asks why Thomas had a breastplate on his chest when arrested. "I often scratch my sleep," says Thomas. "It's still choking on me," he adds.

21/08 06:53 Said not to have been rented the car
Kolbrún asks Thomas why he told his girlfriend that he had not rented this red car. "I did not want to worry about her," replies Thomas. The prosecutor's questions are now over and now Thomas's verdict asks why his pronunciation is such a change. "I was in isolation and very stressed. The police came in to me every two hours and yelled at me. She was not good at me and I did not get in touch with my family or my girlfriend. I did not know what was happening. " As can be seen below, Thomas changed his testimony. He drew back that there had been two girls in the car and seemed to try to find the blame on the other crew who spent time in detention. He claims to be calm after losing his isolation, and then he's remembered better. "Why do the police say wrong?" Asks his defender. "I wanted to help," he says. "And where comes the story of the two stairs," asks the defender. "She's from the other crew," replies Thomas.

21/08 06:58
Thomas claims to have been arrested immediately when the special forces boarded Polar Nanoq. Two armed men have taken him. He asked what was happening, and did not say he had said something to the police who arrested him. Thomas claims to be very afraid as he had a large amount of drugs hidden on board the ship. Thomas defender asks if he has touched Birna driver's license, but Thomas says she never saw her name or picture of her before. "I do not know." Verjandinn asks him out in the shoes and whether he has touched them. "I have never seen these shoes before. No, I do not remember. "

21/08 07:01 Do not be well after drinking alcohol
Thomas says it is natural that he will not drink after drinking alcohol and it is not uncommon for him to undergo influence. "Did you do anything wrong," asks the defender. "No," says Thomas. "Did you help someone else," continues the guardian. "No," reiterates Thomas. "Did you get it straight," but Thomas's answer is the same way. "No."

21/08 07:03 "What I'm Saying Now is True"
Prosecutor has now become and asks whether Thomas is in charge of what has happened during the trial. "What I'm saying now is true," says Thomas. There have not been two girls in the car on the pool, he has not been kissing a girl on the island of Óseyrarbraut, but eating a sandwich. "I know now that there was only one girl."

21/08 07:05 Interview with Thomas on the issue of Birna concluded
Thomas's hearings for the Birnu case are over and now the prosecutor asks for the mass found in Polar Nanoq.

21/08 07:12 "Why do not you do this in the Atlantic?"
Thomas says he has been asked to take something from Denmark to Greenland. He has met some people who have taken pictures of the driver's license on a Blackberry phone. Thomas resumed the drug found on Polar Nanoq and transferred to Greenland. Defender Thomas asks whether he has financed or organized the smuggling. "Why did not you hide the drugs?" Asks the guardian. "Because I did not want to go with them anymore. I was hesitant at the beginning," says Thomas. Verjandinn points out that the special forces have come and asks why he did not throw them in the Atlantic. "Because I did not want to be this long but I could not get them, then something bad could happen to me."

21/08 07:13 Dissertation of Thomas Thomas completed
A review of Thomasi has been completed and the referee has decided to make a short break.

21/08 07:27 Looks out when the other crew reports
Now it is time to report on the other crew who spent time in detention. He has suddenly become the focal point of the event after Thomas's testimony. HOnum was released after changing his testimony that two girls had come into the car - he'd only seen one and the story of two girls was from Thomasi.
Thomas does not look at him but turns away.

21/08 07:29 May refuse to answer a question
The other crew may refuse to answer questions that may cause him a fault. The judge stated that this was done because of Thomas's testimony this morning.

21/08 07:39 Do not say much about Saturday night
The other crew, Nikolaj Olsen, claims to have met Thomas and another crew at the harbor in Hafnarfjordur. He intended to take a taxi into Reykjavík, but they offered to shuttle him. He then went to the English Pub and was chatting with Thomas who intended to meet him when he was taking a shower. He had drunk calmly, but then Thomas had come alone. "We drink there but suddenly it's like the place is closed." They then crossed the American Bar but he arrived only later because he was talking on the phone. At first he could not come in, but then Thomas had come to see him. "I do not remember much about what happened inside. I was so full that I was alcoholic." From the American Bar they went to the car, the red Kia Rio car. "I wanted to go home but Thomas wanted to go for a ride." This contradicts what Thomas said in his report - he said the idea of the car ride had come from Nikolaj. Nikolaj claims that a woman has come into the car and he will have fallen asleep in the car. "Thomas woke me up when we came down to the harbor and I boarded them." He then went into a room and talked to the phone.

21/08 07:41 Did not know the girl as Birna
Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir, prosecutor, asks Nikolaj if he can tell how it happened that the girl came to Laugaveg. He just said he had come in the back seat. He will not have been in a relationship with the girl and can not say that the girl was Birna Brjánsdóttir.

21/08 07:50 NIkolaj: If I had run I would have caught an accident
Nikolaj claims to have called his friend and girlfriend when he came down to his *advertiser censored* and talked to them. "I do not remember what I said to them," says Nikolaj, but Thomas has not even looked at him in the white cloth. Nikolaj claims to have met his girlfriend as a bartender at the English Pub. Kolbrun asks him if he has called it. "I do not remember exactly but when I looked at my phone I saw that I had called several times." Nikolaj is asked if he ran the car last night. "No - I can not drive. I have never gone to a driving school and do not have a driving license." And he would remember if he had run the car.
Now Kolbrún Nikolaj asks in Thomas's testimony that he was the one who had interacted with the girl. "I doubt I could drive the car and doubt I could talk to her because I fell asleep in the car. If I had run the car so full I would probably have caught an accident." Nikolaj does not claim to have asked to be alone with the girl. "I doubt it. I would not drive a car so full." Nikolaj ssegist doubted that it could have happened that he went alone with the girl. "I do not touch her."

21/08 07:57 Know that now that only one girl was in the car
Nikolaj says it was crazy for him when he was in isolation that only one girl had been in the car. He met Thomas on Saturday morning and asked him what had happened to these women who got into the car and Thomas had responded that he had given them something wrong. Nikolaj does not claim to have found any injury to the body, and that Thomas Möller did not mention him.

21/08 08:03 Come to Iceland every year since 2011
Páll Rúnar M. Kristjánson, Thomas's Defender, asks Nikolaj when he has been informed that he no longer had the legal status of the defendant. "I do not remember exactly - I was released and something went on in the matter. I do not remember the exact date." Nikolaj claims to have come to Iceland every year since 2011 and had once hit the strikes in Iceland. Paul Rúnar casts a picture of a tent that is a video camera shot of a taxi. The red Kia Rio car at the town is the best and you can buy a sausage. "Is this you?" Asks Paul "I do not know," replies Nikolaj. Paul asks him if he was in a wolf. "I do not quite remember but when I left the American Bar we left the car and left them in the car."

21/08 08:15 Showed a video from Hafnarfjörður harbor
Nikolaj does not say if Thomas spoke to the girl who came into the car at Laugavegur. He does not remember if he had been sleeping all the way into Hafnarfjordur but kept it. The car journey from Reykjavik city center to Hafnarfjordur seems to be in great shape because Nikolaj has repeatedly said he will not leave things. He is asked if anyone other than him or Thomas has run the car. "I do not know - I doubt it." Paul Rún shows an image taken from the camera camera system. Prosecutor comments on how blurred the picture is and says nothing is true even though Nikolaj can not be seen. Judge Kristinn Halldórsson points out that the witness has said that he has been in the car and that's what it means. Paul Rúnar shows another photo, stating that Nikolaj was not a car belt. "Do you understand any explanation?" Asks Paul "I was probably sleeping," replies Nikolaj. Another video is now showing Nikolaj and Thomas coming on the red Kia Rio car and put in front of Polar Nanoq. A picture from the golf bowl is now shown and is shown in the driver's neck. Defender Thomas asks if he was driving. "No, Thomas," replies Nikolaj. "But Thomas is 192 centimeters," says Paul, who is stopped by a judge who thinks the defender has gone too far. The witness has already said that there will be little car driving because of drunkenness and the defender is too far in evidence.

21/08 08:29 Said the police have screamed
Defender Thomas has asked Nikolaj why he had used his right hand to get out of the car and assisted the gangway with his right hand when he was arrested. "Was there anything wrong with your left hand?" Asks the guardian. "No," replies Nikolaj. Nikolaj claims to have gone to bed at 11 o'clock on Saturday and about twelve o'clock he talked to Captain Polar Nanoq and told him last night that they had been in trouble. Nikolaj says that when they were first questioned, the police went out and screamed at them but not after that. Nikolaj says he did not want to hide anything from interrogations - he simply was very full and did not remember much and did not want to say false. "It may be that something was misinterpreted." Paul picks out a controversy over Nikolaj, as his defender is concerned about whether Nikolaj may have been trying to please the police. And as the host stops interrogations and says that his client may have been trying to get into the gaps. "Did you ever try to get into the gaps?" Asks Paul Nikolaj claims to have been full and he has tried to remember the most.

21/08 08:35 Reporting of Nikolaj completed - food break
A report on Nikolaj is now complete. He said he did not remember much from this momentous night. Initially, the report would end at 12 o'clock, but it fell due to Thomas Möller's new testimony. Now a break has been made at 13:30

21/08 09:33 Primary treatment to restart after a break
It is expected that the main proceedings will start again at 13:30, but before then, the prosecutor will include Nikolajs Olsen, who spent time on custody of the case. First, however, it is a telephone report of Inuk Kristiansen, who was in the crew of Polar Nanoq when the ship was in Hafnarfjordur in the middle of January.

21/08 09:42 Told his friend since he had kissed Birnu
Inuk was with Thomasi when he rented the red Kia Rio car. "We went to a sports hall and then rented a car. Then went back to fitness and back down." They drove Nikolaj down to town, then went into Hafnarfjordur, and then Thomas went and Nikolaj. Inuk claims to have left her wagon after the car and got her back the next day from Thomasi. "I got the wool again from Thomas, and then she was washed and wiped." Inuk says that Thomas had given the explanation that a woman had a bad nappy and that's why he washed it. "I do not really know if there were one or two women." Inuk says that Thomas did not talk much about the woman but told her friend that he had kissed the woman. "He said nothing where he said he had kissed her."

21/08 09:48 Following the smell of the red Kia Rio car
Inuk went with Thomasi to return the car and Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir, prosecutor, asked him if he had seen something unnatural about the car. "Thomas told me it had been pissed into the car and I noticed some spots." Inuk said he could not accurately predict the smell of the car. Inuk was arrested aboard Polar Nanoq and told police officers that Thomas had left a new wool and said that two girls had been in the car. Paul Smith, Thomas's Defender, asks Inuk now whether he had told police in a statement that he had found a car accident. "Yes - I've probably said that. I remember some smell but could not accurately tell who she was." Inuk says he does not remember this exactly, but he will know that Thomas has let him have the wool.

21/08 10:02 Was unclear after a call with Nikolaj
Nikolaj's former boyfriend said in a statement that she would be unclear after talking to Nikolaj on Saturday 14 January. "We had been raping and he called me to invite me a good night," she said, claiming that he had been drinking. "He was as usual - very quiet." She said he had been sleeping when Nikolaj called and he just wanted to offer a good night. "I knew he was going to town. I knew he was planning a taxi and I wondered how he'd come back and said he had got a ride with Thomasi." The girlfriend of the former said that Nikolaj would not have mentioned that any girls had arrived in the car until January 16th. "Then he told me he would not wonder if there had been one or two girls up in the car and that he had fallen asleep." She says Nikolaj has acknowledged drinking too much and seeing him. And she heard from others that Nikolaj had spoken to someone else this night. "I do not remember who he spoke to - maybe his friend but I do not remember."

Security cameras show Thomas spent significant time in the car at a secluded spot on the harbour after he dropped Nikolaj off at the trawler. Police believes that the assault on Birna took place during this time. Large quantities of blood were later found in the vehicle and her shoes were found near the spot where Thomas had parked the car. DNA from Thomas was found on the shoelaces. Police also found scratches, suggesting a struggle, on Thomas' chest and hands.

Thomas, however, claims that he often scratches himself to blood while sleeping. He offered no explanation for the blood found in the vehicle, and claims he was searching for his cellphone in the car during the time it was parked in the harbour area, and that he then fell asleep inside the car.

Security cameras then show Thomas driving off from the harbour, before returning several hours later. Police believes he used this time to dump Birna's body as well as attempting to scrub the car of evidence. Birna's body was found on January 22 after a massive search by more than 500 ICE-SAR members.

When asked why his testimony in court was so wildly different from his previous testimony Thomas said he had been "upset" after he was arrested by the police. The police, he said, had called him names and pressured him to provide information. The police, he said, "had been mean" to him, and that he had felt as if he was "a monster".

In Thomas' new version of events he was nothing more than a driver for the second sailor, who he claims had been aggressively pursuing women and girls at bars in downtown Reykjavík earlier in the evening. While previously claiming he had picked up two girls he now says he only picked up one girl who got into the back seat, where the second sailor was.

Is the CCTV on this? Showing Birna getting into the car, and "where" she sits? Can't recall.
TIA!

In his testimony Nikolaj again said he had been too intoxicated to remember anything that happened during the morning, saying he has never learned how to drive a car, and that it would have been physically impossible for him to operate a vehicle in his state of intoxication. He also repeated his previous testimony that Thomas had attempted to influence his testimony to the police.

Anyone know if the car was a 'stick-shift" or "automatic" - I couldn't be able to drive a stick-shift IF I didn't know how to actually drive.... just wondering!

and....

The trial will continue on Tuesday August 22 and Friday August 1 September. A total of 38 people will give testimony.

Thanks for that update JerseyGirl - kind of had to read "around" some of those words! LOL!

As usual I can't find anything on what happened yesterday (8/22) on this case.... :gaah:

Anyone else find anything?

TIA!

I'm assuming he is surrounded by his legal defense team.

Very disturbing.

A forensic investigator with the police told the court he had been "shocked" at the quantity of blood inside the vehicle. Most of the blood splatters had been smeared by the attempts to clean the car, making it impossible for Police to fully reconstruct what happened inside the vehicle.

Police was able to determine that Birna had been hit at least twice after she started bleeding. The quantity of blood found inside the vehicle also pointed to a very violent assault. A large pool of blood had collected beneath one of the passenger seats in the back of the car. Birna's body showed she suffered a broken nose during the attack, as well as bruises and wounds over her body.

A foreign forensic expert who examined the body testified that the injuries on Birna's body suggested she had been beaten by fist numerous times.
