Olsen is charged with beating her repeatedly over the face and head inside the red Kia Rio vehicle, holding her by the throat with great force and throwing her into the water where she drowned. Birna was found with a broken nose and evidence of severe blunt force injuries to the head and face.
These violent events occurred either when the car was parked at Hafnarfjörður harbour or in another unidentified location.
Olsen is also charged for a drug smuggling offence having tried to smuggle 23 kilos of cannabis to Greenland which he had hidden in his cabin on the Polar Nanoq trawler.
Birnas parents are claiming ISK 10.5 million each, or ISK 21 million in total, and her father is also calling for Olsen to be made to cover her funeral costs.

Olsen is currently in prison at Hólmsheiði awaiting trial. He admitted in his first interrogation with police that he picked up Birna into a red Kia Rio vehicle. However, he says that he picked up two girls, Birna and one other girl. He admits to driving both girls to Hafnarfjörður, kissing Birna in the backseat of the car and then letting both girls out of the vehicle at a roundabout in the Vallar district of Hafnarfjörður at their demand.
Olsen's fingerprints were found on Birna's drivers licence found in a black rubbish bag on board the Polar Nanoq trawler, where he was a crew member.
Birna's blood was found on Olsen's anorak. When his clothes were tested for forensic evidence it came to light that they had been in contact with a considerable amount of blood, despite the garments having been washed.

Seven members of the Polar Nanoq crew gave their testimony regarding Olsen’s activities in the fateful hours surrounding Birna’s death.
Olsen was described positively by his crewmates as “friendly,” “popular” and “very conscientious in his work.” None of them claimed to have had any special knowledge of Olsen’s whereabouts on that night; he had eaten lunch with other members of the crew and then went off in his rental car, a red Kia. Olsen has admitted to having picked up Birna in that car, but maintains that he had dropped her off alive. A few of the crew members also confirmed having seen him in that rental car, including carrying a wet towel from the car on the pier that night.
The ship’s first mate testified that Olsen had become panicked and hysterical after receiving a text message from a journalist, inquiring about Birna’s disappearance. Olsen had received a text message from his girlfriend around the same time, where he was told that he might be under suspicion in Iceland in connection with the young woman’s disappearance. Olsen’s fellow crew members confirm that he became extremely anxious upon reading the message, no longer capable of eating or speaking. Members of the crew saw it necessary to give him tranquilizing medication to calm his nerves.
In the captain’s testimony, Olsen had been told that there was an engine failure as police SWAT teams were on their way to apprehend him. When he heard the helicopters swarming overhead, he is said to have asked the ship’s cook, “Do you think they’re coming to get me?”
Møller will testify on August 21. He is detained in an Icelandic prison, the delay is due to an unfinished forensic report. He was not present during these hearings.

There are 37 witnesses who will testify in the case, many of whom will come before the court today and tomorrow. Five of the witnesses will be heard on September 1st, including Grímur Grimsson, who led the investigation of the case, and German medical examiner Sebastian Kunz, who performed the autopsy on Birna’s body.
The proceedings began with questioning of the accused. Questioning of his shipmates on the Polar Nanoq, who spent two weeks in detention and isolation during the investigation, will follow. Möller Olsen’s girlfriend will also testify via telephone. The proceedings will take place in five languages: Icelandic, English, Danish, German, and Greenlandic.

They took advantage of the day to go for a ride, look at the Kringluna and Smáralind where they were eating. Then went to the gym and went back down to the ship. Thomas claims to have shuttled the other crew in charge of custody in the evening, but he himself went back to the ship. The other officer then contacted him and asked him to pick up himself. He agreed to that and the other officer at the English Pub. "He was pretty full because he had worked in the mountain bike," says Thomas.

And asks him what was in this package, which he claims to have delivered on Saturday morning. "I can not say that." Kolbrún then asks how big the package was. "I can not say. I do not want to say more about this." Defender Thomas seizes them and says Thomas does not want to comment on this.

Kolbrún now asks about where he traveled between 7 and 11 when no idea where the Kia Rio car was. "I can not say that," says Thomas, who always looks forward to the opening of a dummy in a courtroom to prevent him from being photographed. The prosecutor now asks him about the hour after eleven o'clock. He claims to have bought toothpaste but did not find it right. The prosecutor asks him what he has been doing at a scene at Óseyrbrabraut where he is seen on a security camera. "I was eating a sandwich," Thomas replies. "I ate calmly," he continues.

He claims to be calm after losing his isolation, and then he's remembered better. "Why do the police say wrong?" Asks his defender. "I wanted to help," he says. "And where comes the story of the two stairs," asks the defender. "She's from the other crew," replies Thomas.
