It is terrible and chilling. The Icelandic police have done an amazing job so far. From the sound of it they are trying to get something to tie them to the crime in the event that She is not found. Circumstantial evidence isn't enough. I hope justice is served.

My greatest fear is what fear what they might have put Birna through! I can only pray that she was drugged up enough ( & I do believe she was not drunk not her normal) that she didn't have to endure any torture!

Do you have a link to that report, bacilou?

Tomorrow one of the biggest searches conducted in the history of Iceland will start, but every single division of Ice-Sar (Icelandic Association of Search and Rescue), which is manned solely by thousands of unpaid and highly qualified volunteers, will assist in the search.

ETA: I'm trying to look for a photo to show how big the search area is. It was shown on the news tonight but I can't seem to find it in any online media.

Over 500 SAR team members, dogs, drones, a helicopter, cars and all terrain vehicles are all searching for Birna Brjánsdóttir today. Traces of blood were found in the vehicle rented by two crew members on Greenlandic trawler the Polar Nanoq.

One of the men arrested is 25 years old and the other is 30 years old and they are in police custody on suspicion of a heinous crime.

President Guðni Jóhannesson wrote a statement this morning to the Icelandic nation saying that his thoughts were with the family and friends of Birna as well as all those trying to resolve the case and the hundreds of SAR team members looking for her. He added that people need to be careful not to become prejudiced or suspicious, thus referring to a couple of incidents where Icelanders have shown prejudice against Greenlanders in Iceland in the last couple of days.

I am so impressed by the huge turnout of searchers.......what compassionate people!

Indeed. It is wonderful to see such acrive concern. I'm impressed by how seriously this has been handled by all. Birna's family must find a small bit of comfort knowing that all possible is being done to find Birna.

This is a avery sad case - I was recently in Iceland and have good friends there. I always felt safe from people - in fact the sea and the vast expanses of nature were far more terrifying than Reykjavik at night. I just don't feel like this will be as straightforward as it seems.

I have been following this case since Birna went missing and hoped she would be found safely. It would seem that the case is leading towards the outcome being less so.
My heart goes out to Birna, her family and everyone who knew her.
So sad

No clues on Birna's whereabouts despite today's massive search
Police officer Grímur Grímsson who leads the investigation of the disappearance of Birna Brjánsdóttir says that not much progress was made to shed a light on her whereabouts.

What today's search did however do to was to eliminate certain areas so that others can be searched further. Nothing today was found that can be connected with Birna in any way.
Police are looking at the cellphones of the two men in custody and according to Grímsson there is still a gap in the timeline of events between 7 am and 11.30 am when the Red Kia Rio was driven from Hafnarfjörður harbour on Saturday morning, a drive which took four hours. It is possible that the car got pretty far in that space of time which means that the area to be searched is very large.

I'm a bit confused about the forum rules. Can I post something that has not been published in MSM but has been confirmed by a reporter and will eventually make it to MSM? Or should I just wait until the article is written and then post about it?

Her phone continued to produce a signal until at about 5:50 in Hafnarfjörður, near the area of the fire station. Given the distance covered in this short amount of time, it is likely she went to Hafnarfjörður by car.

An extensive search was today in Southwest Iceland, on about 3000 square kilometer area, the biggest search ever in Iceland. Almost 600 search and rescue workers, dogs, drones, two helicopters, 70-80 cars and all terrain vehicles are involved.

[FONT=&quot]Capital area police released surveillance camera footage which shows her walking east on Laugavegur at about 5:25 Saturday morning, after a night out in the club Hurra. After police had scanned footage from several cameras along Laugavegur, it appears as though Birna walked no further than Laugavegur 31. Surveillance footage taken on Laugavegur on the night of the disappearance shows a red Kia Rio traveling on Laugavegur at about the same time and place that Birna disappeared.
Her phone continued to produce a signal until at about 5:50 in Hafnarfjörður, near the area of the fire station. Given the distance covered in this short amount of time, it is likely she went to Hafnarfjörður by car. Two black Dr. Martens boots – the same kind Birna was wearing on the night she disappeared – were found near the harbor in Hafnarfjörður, were Polar Nanoq lay on Saturday. Police say they have found evidence of criminal activity within a red Kia Rio rented by one of the crew members, and traces of blood. They are believed to have killed the woman, but her body has not been found.
[h=3]Third crew member arrested[/h]
A third crew member has been arrested for smuggling 20 kilos of marihuana on board Polar Nanoq.
All three have been pronounced by Reykjavík District Court to remain in police custody for at least the next two weeks. Police believe the two men suspected of murder should remain in custody for at least four weeks, and intend to appeal that matter to the Supreme Court.
[h=3]The white car[/h]A driver of a white car is kindly asked by police to come forward, not on any suspicion on involvement with the case of Birna but because he may have information needed by the police. The driver of the white car, driven west on Óseyrarbraut in Hafnarfjordur last Saturday at 12.24.
The number for police is 444 1000, emails through abending@lrh.is and private messages on the Reykjavik Metropolitan Police Facebook site.
