Yes I remember that and I believe she has a bombshell to drop. Not sure why I think that, but she seems oddly missing from most conversations. JMO
I personally hope she slept soundly through the entire night and neither saw nor heard anything. I hope her trauma didn’t begin until the victims were discovered in the morning.

When does the discovery phase begin?

On 20/20, they mentioned, iirc, that the discovery phase begins after the preliminary hearing. I believe Dateline said the opposite, i.e., that it begins now.

For the attorneys here, which is the case? I can see BK wanting to waive a speedy prelim if he's getting the dirt from the prosecution which he can use to devise his story and/or decide how to plead.
They said compliance within 14 days signed the 10th of January. So by the 24th.

I didn't say otherwise. I know he was on Death Row.

But he never received the death penalty. He died of natural causes. Would they have carried out his sentence? Don't know. Idaho has its issues in that area, which I have posted about upthread.

I did not intend to say that this death row inmate wasn't given the death penalty - he was introduced by someone else as an example of someone getting the death penalty without a regular trial, that was the context.

No worries, though. I find your posts very enlightening as well and it's good to keep me on my toes.
All's well here..I get too verbally detailed and literal sometimes. I did look up the juror questioning here and found out it's allowed in civil cases only. Have no idea why not in the criminal cases.

Err’body denied it and Dateline’s sources confirm it was a coincidence. I ain’t buying it! Nothing about any of that was organic and natural (on either side of the door)!
One YouTube content creator, retired Detective Ken Mains, gave an assessment that made a lot of sense to me. He said that the FBI would not put an Indiana State Trooper at risk by having him approach the car of a murder suspect alone, and that rings true to me. For all anybody knew Kohberger might have been armed and ready to go on a killing spree starting with the trooper if he thought the cops were on to him.

Most plausible reason for a "thud" IMO is a trunk being slammed shut.

We have no timestamp on the thud, btw.
It's plausible, though can't see why it's any more plausible than other possible scenarios, including the "thud" having been someone hitting the floor/wall very hard inside the house where the attacks occurred.

I just put the same link up. I'm not seeing a "50 %" waiver on that link at all. In other words, I'm agreeing with you.

Here you go.

That's for grad school in general. Specific programs can obviously obtain exceptions. Did Bryan have an exception? I don't know, I'd need to see his offer. In my own program, 8 of us got the tuition break, the rest did not (and were very few in number). At UC Berkeley, about 10 out 100 students in the linguistics or anthropology programs get tuition waivers, and the rest have to wait until they can TA - a year or more after they arrive.

This is up to the individual departments in those cases. But someone posted that the Criminology Program gave TA-ships and waivers to all - but I'm not sure they can circumvent the Chancellor's rules as mentioned in the above link (well, they can, if they have grant funding, I would think - with the department paying up the missing tuition for the student). I'm a little surprised that WSU's Criminology can do that - but I assume it's a small program. And there are definitely grants for research in Criminology. This basically means the profs are working at finding funding.

From WSU's Criminology department website:

Teaching Assistantships: Teaching Assistants are obligated to provide 20 hours of instruction-based service per week. The awarding of teaching assistantships is a very competitive process. There are two types of TAs: support and independent section TAs. Support TA positions assist a faculty member teaching a large course, usually with over 80 students. Independent section TAs teach their own class. All TAs should strive for the highest quality of instructional pedagogy and delivery of services to students. All grading and other responsibilities should be fulfilled thoughtfully and in a timely manne

The above states that the Criminology department's TA positions are 20 hours and therefore eligible for a full tuition waiver per the link your provided. Regarding residency of out of state students in the first year:

Departmental Funding: Students funded by the department with a Teaching Assistantships (TA) or Research Assistantships (RA) receive a specified stipend each month (for nine months), health insurance benefits, and an in-state tuition waiver (for WA state residents). Out-of-state tuition is waived the first year until the student establishes residency. (from the Criminology department's website).

Respectfully, what you are suggesting about WSU's stipend / tuition waiver is inaccurate. I appreciate your different experience, but as a recent PhD student, WSU's policies are standard and similar to my own experiences.

But isn’t it interesting that neither 20/20 nor Dateline mentioned the lack of a front license plate on the video evidence of the white car? I had thought that was a significant piece of them tying BK to the crime and narrowing him down from the many other white Elantras.
Under Pennsylvania law, there is no requirement for a front license plate.
.......
"No, Pennsylvania doesn’t require front license plates. In fact, front license plates were only issued for standard passenger vehicles between 1906 and 1943, then again between 1947 and 1952."
.......
.......
However, in Washington state, you are required to have both front and back license plates.
According to Washington state law, a car must both have a front and back license plate on the car.
I can't find a site that isn't behind a paywall to support this, so I am JMOing this.

"BK applied to have his Pennsylvania license plates changed to Washington plates on November 18, 2022.
"On Nov. 18 he registered his car in Washington and received the Washington license plate CFB-8708 on Dec. 5, according to Washington State Department of Licensing records."

We have no timestamp on the thud, btw.
"At around 4:17 a.m., a security camera near the home of the victims picked up distorted audio of what sounded like a whimper and a loud thud, investigators said. They also said a dog could be heard barking numerous times."

It’s hard for me to write this, because I know I should hate him for what he’s done to those families, his own family, the victims. But does anyone else feel sad for him a little too? Sad that a young man, who had so much going for him, intelligence, studying for a PhD, parents that clearly adored him, a promising career…. and he’s just threw it away, and for what? It’s so senseless I can’t wrap my head around it.

I guess I’m too empathetic for cases like this, and usually I don’t feel any empathy/sympathy for the perpetrators but for some reason this case has hurt me deeply. I feel sad for Bryan’s parents, his dad looked so proud telling the cop about his phd, he had flew across the country to do a road trip with his son. The pictures of him clearing up the glass broke my heart. I feel the same way when I see maddies dad.

Why did it have to happen? How did 16 (more likely 12 minutes) cause such carnage that will last a lifetime. So many lives are ruined.

I hurt for them all. :(

Thank you! I need to start a minute by minute timeline.

So it's possible he was leaving at that moment. Another "thud" could be the slamming of Xana's door (if it's not a cheesy door but one more meant for exterior use - I can't tell). Or any number of other things, I suppose. It could even be unrelated.

Why 'thud' the trunk and not the car door as well. Only 1 thud.

Well, my trunk requires I slam it shut. My car door, I ease shut quietly every single time. Doesn't everyone? I mean, even in a hurry, grabbing the door and quietly shutting it is the default way to shut a car door.

(I'm still puzzled by the thud and am mainly spitballing on the topic).

I wrote my thoughts down a few days ago and then decided not to post what I was feeling. Then you post feelings that almost mirror mine. I have no answers.....here's what I was feeling

Not psychic or anything, but I usually at least have strong feelings about the defendant. The evidence thus far makes him look quite guilty but I'm not feeling my usual hatred toward him like I have with other murderers in the past. I don't know if reading the tat postings softened my emotions or what. This is a new experience for me and I don't understand my empathy towards him or is it that I'm not feeling his guilt as well? Things are just not adding up. There is much more to this than what I've seen so far. I think big surprises are coming or I'm just out in left field.

I was wondering why he chose WSU from PA.
Maybe it was this lab? and the research they did from this lab?

JMO
I can think of a couple of reasons:
1) There are only a handful of universities with Ph.D programs in criminology.
2) Out of that handful of universities with Ph.D programs in criminology, WSU may have been the only one where he got accepted.
