INTERVIEW WITH CHIEF FRY

8th. December.

Reporter - First, start by explaining why this search for this white vehicle?.

Chief - So, we have information of a white vehicle that was in the area either, during the time frame of the homicide or around the time frame of the homicide, and we're just wanting to talk to the individuals who were in that vehicle. They may have some valuable information for us and we're looking for a 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra. So any assistance you can give us, anybody that owns one, anyone that knows of someone who owns one or may have been driving one, if you could get a hold of us through our tip line or call us directly, we'd appreciate that.

Reporter - This bodycam image and the white car - Is this the white car Investigators are looking for?.

Chief - So, the bodycam image that is out there, from an officer who was on a call with alcohol offence, does have a white vehicle in it. This is not the vehicle that we were looking for. So, we wanted to clear that up with all news media.

Reporter - And finally, the tip line, the process - What do you want to tell the public about that?.

Chief - So, the tip line now will go to an FBI call centre. We've done that because we started receiving many, many tips and that call centre can categorise those and they can send those tips back to the investigators so we can follow up and make sure that we continue with our investigation.

The Sigma Chi fraternity house, left, on Nez Perce Drive can be seen from outside the perimeter of the King Road house where four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death Nov. 13. Two of the victims, Ethan Chapin and his girlfriend, Xana Kernodle, attended a party at Sigma Chi for about five hours before returning to the off-campus home on King Road, the balcony of which can be seen on the right. In contrast, the Saturday night leading up to the students’ deaths, which police have characterized as murders, was notably quiet, two neighbors who live in an adjacent apartment complex told the Idaho Statesman. The Idaho Vandals football team played their final home game of the season that night, drawing many students downtown afterwards rather than to the neighborhood, a few theorized.

[..]

Since August, the home had three noise complaints for loud music — including two on the same night in early September — reported to police, according to a Statesman review of Moscow police reports related to the tenants. Both came from homes located on the street just above the valley where the three-story, six-bedroom King Road home sits.

[..]

Harsh, too, said he took note of the unusual quiet of the surroundings when he got home from work at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 13. He’s used to a noisy environment, even at that hour, he said, and once over the summer wandered into one of his neighbor’s house parties, thinking it was Goncalves, Kernodle and Chapin with whom he shared some conversation.

[..]

After an initial conversation with a police officer that Sunday, Harsh said he already went back to investigators at the home to report a black luxury SUV that he hadn’t seen in the neighborhood before, parked a few spaces from the front of the home when he made it back early that morning.

Graduation is this weekend at the University of Idaho. Hotels are full and families are in Moscow to celebrate — while there is still so much uneasiness in town. The university says there will be a moment of silence to “respect the time we are in and the loss of these students.”

0:42 Interviewer: this body cam image and the white car is this the white car investigators are looking for?

0:48 Fry: so the body cam image that is out there from an officer who was on a call with an alcohol offense does have a white vehicle in it, this is not the vehicle we are looking for so we want to clear that up with the news media.

The University of Idaho-Moscow had a home football game the weekend of the murders. They played UC-Davis on 11/12. The murders were committed in the early morning hours of 11/13. The game's theme was 'Hero's Weekend/Senior Day'.

Their stadium has capacity for 16,000 people. Just mentioning because I'm assuming there were a number of out-of-town people there to attend the game that weekend.

'We want people to pay attention to what we're putting out there because that is accurate information, and anything that comes from other sources is either rumor or speculation,' Fry said.

Following his statement, the police department said: 'Anyone engaging in threats or harassment whether in person, online or otherwise needs to understand that they could be subjecting themselves to criminal charges.

'Moscow Police Department cautions the public not to rely on rumors and remains committed to keeping the public informed. We urge reliance on official channels for accurate information.'

TRANSCRIPT OF BRIEF INTERVIEW WITH CHIEF FRY

(Commencement weekend)

10TH DECEMBER.

Reporter - Tell us about the weekend - so many people in town. What's happening as far as public safety during this time?.

Chief - Yes, it's a very important weekend for the University. It's our commencement weekend and we're going to have a lot of officers around. We're going to have a lot of Idaho State Police around. You'll see us both, at the commencement, as well as just around town, providing safety.

Reporter - Where are we at in the investigation right now?.

Chief - Well, we're working steady on the investigation, still. We're still receiving tips, we're still receiving items in from down at the lab. Things are continuing, were still pushing forward, and it's.. we're in the normal process of investigation. We're still doing a lot of interviews and I'm talking to a lot of people.

Reporter - What about the number of people involved, at this point?.

Chief - We still have the same amount of staff, Idaho State Patrol, our local Moscow Police Department Detectives and FBI, not only here locally, but still across our nation, across our state.

TRANSCRIPT OF BRIEF INTERVIEW WITH CHIEF FRY

(White car and harassment)

9TH DECEMBER.

Reporter - We'll start with the white car. How many tips are coming in?, and, How are police using them?.

Chief - We've had an amazing amount of tips come in on the white car. We appreciate everybody's help that has been sending in those tips and investigators are vetting those and they're following up on those and the response has been very great. We appreciate all the help from across the nation, and our community.

Reporter - In some cases we're hearing that people are borderline being harassed by speculation and rumours out there. What are police doing about that?.

Chief - Well, what we want people to know is, is that individuals who are being harassed in this situation - people need to be careful, because some of its happening online, some of its happening through phone calls and in person and people could be charged, possibly, in the future if it continues to a point where it reaches a criminal element.

Reporter - What can people do to help that situation?.

Chief - I think number 1, just call us anytime that there's any of that happening, so that we can deal with that immediately.

Reporter - And what about the information - What is being done to make sure the information that is out there is not causing speculation and rumours?.

Chief - You know, there's been a lot of speculation and rumours and what we want to say is, we're the official source of information. We want people to pay attention to what we're putting out there, because that is accurate information and anything that comes from other sources, is either rumour or speculation and we want to put and end to that as soon as possible.

TRANSCRIPT.

CAPTAIN GIVES BRIEF UPDATE

12TH DECEMBER.

Captain - Good morning, my name's Roger Lanier. I'm the Captain with the Moscow Police Department. I'm in charge of the Operations Division. And today is Dec. 12th, Monday. I want to give you an update on the King Rd. homicide investigations, at least the information that we have to this point. Over the weekend, investigators still continued to sort through numerous tips, calls and online tips in regard to this investigation.

There's been a lot of questions about the white car that we've been interested in. We're looking for that car because we believe, through our investigation, that that car was in the area during the time of the murders and we also believe that the occupant or occupants may have seen something. They may not know they've seen something. So, we specifically want to talk to them and we want to know who they are and what they might know or might be able to contribute to the investigation.

Over the weekend, investigators have sorted through and prioritised numerous tips. Some are tips that came in earlier and we've been working on. Other tips are new and are relevant. It's overwhelming sometimes with the amount of information that comes in on these tip lines. So, our analysts have spent hours sorting through and trying to come up with the most relevant tips first for the investigators to follow up on. They have re-interviewed some of the folks we've interviewed earlier in this investigation to clarify information. Sometimes when new information comes forward, the people that we've spoken to beforehand may have new insight on that. So, it does often seem like we're backtracking but we're really just trying to get the most important details and the best timeline that we can come up with.

We have literally an army of analysts who have been sorting through videos that have been submitted through the fbi.gov.moscow upload site. Those videos are from all over town, gas stations and specifically the area around King Rd. We've been trying to use those videos to garner new information. As you can imagine, there's hours and hours and hours of videos, so it does take a lot of time.

I want to talk a minute about safety. There's been a lot of speculation about what is the safety to the public right now or the risk to the public right now. I would just like to add that we should always be vigilant. Certainly we should be vigilant now, but we should make that a way of life for us. We should always be walking with our head up, sticking to lighted paths and walking in groups, if we can. In addition, letting people know when you've arrived home if you have not made prior arrangements. This is not an indication of a specific elevated risk, but something that we should be vigilant with just in our daily lives.

I want let everybody know that we are still 100% committed to solving this crime. There's a lot of information to sort through and the information keeps coming in and not all of the information is relevant. But you don't know if a tip is valid until you take the time to examine that tip and see how it relates to other information that you might have. We have teams in Moscow, Salt Lake City and in Virginia, as well as other locations across the country and we're prepared to do interviews and follow up on information at any point, anywhere. The ISP and FBI investigators along with the Moscow Police Department investigators, includes dozens of analysts, tip line operators and others. And they're working around the clock, seven days a week, to sort through the volumes of information. MPD has detectives, support personnel and a communications team to try to keep everything together, but it is still a daunting task. The FBI, their investigators, are ready at a moments notice at any place in the country to go conduct an interview should the tips and leads take us there. And, the Idaho State Police has, besides working on the investigation, had several uniformed troopers in the area to help with safety concerns around the city and on the University of Idaho campus.

Just a quick reminder. Please stick to official news releases for information. Tracking down rumours and quelling rumours about specific individuals or specific events that may or may not have happened is a huge distraction for investigators and oftentimes is the result of social media propagation and it is very, very frustrating to investigators and hard to stay on track.

Finally I just want to add that we do have a lot of information and we are specifically keeping that information safe. We're not releasing specific details because we do not want to compromise this investigation. It's what we must do. We owe that to the families and we owe that to the victims. We want more than just an arrest. We want a conviction. We owe that justice to Xana, Kaylee, Madison and Ethan.

And finally, I would just like remind anybody with information - you can call the tip line at 208-883-7180 and that is directly to the tip line office in the FBI. There's been some frustration about having to wade through the tip line, but remember this is not the only investigation in the country. So, please be patient. We want that information. Anything could break this open for us and then also the e-mail tip line is tipline@CI.moscow.ID.US. Thank you for your continued patience in this investigation.

Idaho murder victims' HANDS were bagged at scene to try and preserve crucial evidence that could lead to killer: Cop says he found glove outside

  • Idaho cops have bagged the hands of the four University of Idaho students who were murdered in their sleep last night
  • Authorities say the victims' hands may contain evidence such as skin or hair under the fingernails of their attacker if they tried to fight back
  • Idaho State Police would then be able to run that DNA through state and national databases to find a match
  • The process, though, could take weeks as there are likely multiple DNA samples found inside their off-campus home
  • It comes as a retired cop says he found a glove outside the home that police apparently missed during their initial sweep of the crime scene
