I wonder if Kaylee's claim she was being stalked was a bit of dramatic flair on her part. Maybe referring to someone who liked her but she didn't like back. Just a thought.
Not Kaylee. It was Mark Fuhrman who started the stalker rumor.....he admits he was stating a rumor. Then it grew legs. Imo.

What should students do to prevent being targeted in the future.

Capt. Lanier -Great question-
Travel in pairs, tell someone where you are going, stay with a friend.
That should go under the most bizarre advice ever, considering killer killed four people staying together, who traveled in pairs. How would that advice help to prevent a similar crime?

My feeling is this could take years to solve. Imo.
I don't think so. The killer likely hasn't killed before, is young, impulsive, maybe dumb. The Rhoden family (just an example) was a team, they were smart and calculating and were able to remain free for years despite LE knowing they had committed the crimes. I think there will be a break before Christmas. Just my opinion.

imo.

I have framed photos that mean a lot to our family in various places around my home. Maybe the one of the victims had some special photos in her room…that the survivors remember always seeing there…that are now missing.

Or maybe it is something that appears in their videos, that is missing now. Perhaps a gift or a piece of memorabilia, not something of value…but something that the killer saw fit,in his rage, to remove. It could also point to whomever was ‘targeted.’
I think he meant photos taken that night. Maybe at student parties.

Then when spoken about objects missing, the knife is the obvious thing to come to mind.

He was being deliberately vague, though. He only wants people close to the suspects to understand him.

Is it possible that the perp was an overnight guest of one of the downstairs housemates? That person would be well aware of the layout of the house, and would know everyone was asleep, house quiet. It would explain how they got in. It may have been mentioned on the 911 call that that person was present or had been present. It could explain the ‘targeted’ killing. MOO.

It could also explain the ‘what you don’t see’ comment re that last photo.

Sorry if this sounds naive or has been discussed.
That's an interesting theory I haven't heard yet.

I think that copper just gave something away at the press conference. When he was asked about the students who were in the house but survived he said “Yes there were other people there but we are looking at everyone”. Nobody had suggested up until that point that the one or both of the survivors were suspects.

So I think it’s the surviving room mates under suspicion.

That would also explain the contradictory messaging about whether the public should be alert or not.
The police already said that the 2 surviving roommates were not suspects

What a weird set of floorplans. It's also obviously incorrect. According to the provided floorplans there isn't even a set of stairs leading to the third floor. The windows in the upper left bedroom on the second floor are wrong as well as there are clearly no windows on the side of the house. The door to the lower right bedroom on the second floor is also wrong. Are these supposed to be official plans or some reporters drawing. Either way, very weird. Maybe they are pre-renovation?

I find it interesting that there were only 5 roommates in a 6 bedroom house. In my experience in college, you want to max out the # of roommates to keep rent down regardless of your financial situation. They seemed to have a lot of friends so it seems odd. I wonder if there was ever a plan for a 6th roommate and if there is any story there.

The statement in the press conference that what you don't see could be as important as what you do see, and some discussion here about someone potentially being driven by jealousy have kept this question on my mind. Could there have been something going on between a friend group? Could someone have been set off by KG's Instagram post on Nov. 12th?

My bet is almost assuredly that the perp knew the house, visited it as a prowler while the victims were away or as a friend/acquaintance. You rarely go in a place like that armed with just a knife without scouting the place in advance. It's an incredibly stupid and dangerous thing for the killer to do and albeit there are some people like that out there, this crimes seems way more organized and deliberate to me.

I agree that in responding to how students can stay safe, it should have been said that they must keep their doors locked, close the window curtains or blinds, and not give out keypad codes to one and all.

We all know that they were already traveling in pairs and that didn't help them.

I know dorm culture typically has a doors open, free-flowing "everyone is welcome to hang out"" policy, but the time for that just has to be over, for safety's sake.

I'm a New Yorker, all my life, and we all have multiple locks on all doors. It's a point of pride in many small towns to say "oh, we never even lock our doors here," but a killer can be anywhere and IMO a cultural shift must sadly take place. Even for LE to not mention these basic safety measures implies to me a safe town with basic trust in each other. Clearly that would be lovely but is not practical anymore.

Fox news-

Comes on w/ a snarky voice.

Sir, why not tell the public about the target?

Lanier-preserve the integrity of the investigation. Releasing to the public may flood with info that may or may not be relevant. Don't want to put in jeopardy by releasing.

You are going to have to trust us on why we think targeted. We are not going to release why.
Because they are deferring to BAU qhile developing a profile and because they may have valid concerns or indications that this is an at loose Avenger or escalating, nomadic Serial killer, IMO. At this point I suppose they are working to get it right but the be patient we care deeply message is not effective in lessening the fear or irresponsible speculation that will harm the families, community and others. IMO

It must be scary. But I don‘t know what else they can say to make people feel secure and safe, when they actually aren’t safe now, and apparently weren’t really safe prior to the murders. All the locals can do is stay vigilant.

Are any of us ever really safe? I think we often have a false sense of security. I know I do. Until something awful happens.

jmo
The police do not, generally, show up until after something has happened. That's the way it is, so I would have to say that if you are looking for the police to protect you then, no, you are not safe.

It strikes me as completely the opposite. They really haven't got a clue.
I agree. If they had a suspect he would have been pulled and detained on some other charge most likely. Its not hard to find a reason that a person can be held for up to 48hrs without an actual charge being filed. And during that 48hrs they could interrogate. Unless they lawyer up.
I believe they have no suspects nor POI.

I don't know about residents of Moscow, ID. But, I do know that if my daughter was going there now, we would be looking at transfer for next semester. Especially since the perpetrator has not been caught.

Yes, bad things happen every where. And Moscow, ID seems to be one of the safest places in the world, until it is not.
if i had a kid and they were going to school in moscow right now, they have three choices:

1. Stop going to school there until the perp is caught

2. Transfer to another school

3. Get ready for daddy and his pals smith & wesson and Mr. Mossberg to move in with him/her and the roommates.

I think this question stumped them because ultimately if they can’t tell us what makes them believe it was a targeted attack, they can’t then say “this is how to prevent being targeted by this person” so the answer had to be generic. JMO.

I don't think we know a thing about the killer except basic statistic that this would Most likely be a male. And if it was random, it will take luck to break this case. Imo.

I'm finding LE handling of this very frustrating. I am empathetic to them not wanting to taint tips from the public by sharing information that inadvertently creates bias information. Like not telling the public they believe the killer was wearing a red shirt that night and people disregarding people wearing a blue shirt or thinking they saw a red shirt on someone when they didn't. I get stuff like that.

Even the crime scene descriptions sort of understand them being tight lipped about if they think the killer might be someone they have or will interview and they are hoping something gets revealed to them that only the killer could know.

But come on already with not even sharing what the think the motive is for these attacks. I'm sorry this is just unacceptable.

It makes me think they have nothing at all and don't understand what they are looking at.

Not to make light of this horror but it reminds me of the movie Alice's Restaurant when they police make a big show out of littering. They are making a bog show out of what they are collecting, how many pictures they took, how many men are working the case, what the university is doing, the money invested, the medias efforts and the publics, but when it's all said and done their investigation is hollow inside and they are trying to hide that from the public.

I'm not only disappointed by this presser. I am also angered by it.

Tell us something useful like the order of the attacks or why the other roommates were spared. Tell us something to help us understand. 9 days is a longtime to be without any answers to any questions.
