Private investigator to hold search for missing Idaho woman

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho (AP) - A private investigation firm from Boise is organizing a search for a north-central Idaho woman who has been missing since April 15.

[...]

The Idaho County Sheriff's office is still investigating the case and has conducted a number of searches for Pankey. But so far detectives have been unable to find a trace of the missing woman.

Idaho County Detective Brian Hewson says the private investigation agency, D.L. Investigating, was hired by Pankey's family and the search is not associated with the sheriff's office.

The search is set for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and resume 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Hewson said it is his understanding the private search this weekend will include air, water and drone surveillance.

Daniel Landis of D.L. Investigating posted a social media request for volunteers to help with the search.

"We are requesting volunteers for our search and are specifically asking for backpackers, hunters, hikers, fishermen, campers, outdoor enthusiasts, climbers, pilots and everyday people who have a passion for finding Shawnta," Landis' post reads.

Young mom Shawnta LaRae Pankey still missing after disappearing from Idaho campground

Shawnta’s mom LaDena said her daughter’s boyfriend texted her around 3:30 p.m. that day and asker her if she was with Shawnta.

“I said, ‘No. She’s supposed to be with you. And she’s supposed to pick her daughter up at 5:00 tonight,’” LaDena said. “And then he said, ‘Well, she’s not.’ I kept texting him and calling him trying to get more information. But he never talked to me again.”

LaDena hoped her daughter had gone somewhere with a friend and would still arrive to their pre-arranged meeting spot at 5:00 p.m. to pick up her daughter Sophie. But 5:00 p.m. came and went. Shawnta never showed up.
“We talked to [the people at] all the nearby houses and no one saw her. We covered everywhere where [the boyfriend] said she was last seen,” he said. “We just haven’t come up with anything.”

Sheriff Giddings told Dateline that Shawnta’s boyfriend “appeared to be cooperative at first,” and spoke with authorities, but he was unable to provide anything of significance to lead them to Shawnta.

“We don’t have a crime yet, so we don’t have any suspects. We may have a crime, but we don’t know it yet,” Sheriff Giddings said. “Does someone just disappear? It’s possible. But is it probable? No.”

Young mom disappears without a trace from Idaho campground
The article says they were seen on security cameras at an apartment "packing up gear" at 2:30 in the morning. Grangeville is probably 50 miles straight line from where she was allegedly last seen walking away at camp (though travel to the camp wouldn't be a straight line) so why leave in the middle of the night, especially when it's down in the 30's temperature wise? If they actually left closer to the 10 a.m time the camp was allegedly set up the security camera would have shown that. Also, who goes to the trouble to set up a camp when you have to pick up your child that afternoon? Unless there are other confirmed witnesses, she may not even have been at Pine Bar in my opinion.

Hello, there is an article in the Lewiston Morning Tribune, stating that her boyfriend is a person of interest in her disappearance... I cannot access this article or link it, could somebody help me out?:)

Sheriff's office: Woman's boyfriend a person of interest

Idaho County officials are treating the disappearance of Shawnta L. Pankey of Grangeville as foul play and say the woman's boyfriend is "a person of interest."

Detective Jerry Johnson of the Idaho County Sheriff's Office said Monday Edward M. Mills of Grangeville, the boyfriend of 25-year-old Pankey, was interviewed by his department shortly after Pankey's disappearance April 15.

"(Mills) is definitely a person of interest," Johnson said. "We're operating on the premise that some type of foul play occurred to Shawnta. We don't believe, and the family doesn't believe, that she intentionally went missing. Mills met with us for an interview and agreed to a polygraph. But he failed to show up for the polygraph and has been uncooperative since then and not talking to us."

Remains of a human arm found along Salmon River

Johnson said very little tissue remained on the bone, but it appears to be part of a human forearm extending from the shoulder to the knuckles.

"It was located in some brush along the river about the high-water mark," Johnson said. "We're not sure if it was deposited during this high water or a previous year. It seemed like some bleaching on one of the bones may have been there since last spring's high water."

And authorities also are considering the April 15 disappearance of Shawnta L. Pankey, 25, of Grangeville. Pankey was reportedly last seen along Pine Bar, where she had been camping with her boyfriend, Edward M. Mills, of Grangeville

D.L. Investigating, the private firm hired by Pankey's family, also recovered a hairbrush along the ditch with red hair in it that looked like somebody tossed it. The hairbrush has been sent to the forensic laboratory for DNA testing.
Thanks Cybervampira! - here's another article that talks about the hairbrush if anyone wants to read it.

Bleaching and exfoliation of bone--the beginning stages of destruction of the skeletal elements--begins at about nine months' exposure, so it's likely to be the remains of someone else.

The arrest was actually in 2014. It's easy to misread these documents but I worked in law enforcement for 20 years. He was sentenced to probation, and released to supervision on 2/13/3014. He completed his probation in February of 2017. The date you are seeing is not the arrest date but the date he was released from probation which is termed."sentence satisfaction date" in court records. This likely long before he started dating Shawnta.
