10/25/23 Update: Was extradited back on 10/12/23. First appearance hearing on 10/25/23. Brown was charged with 1st degree murder & concealment of a dead body.
10/25/23 Update: Prosecutors alleged during his court appearance on Wednesday that Brown was the last person seen with his mother, Myrtle Brown & he had booked a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico following her death. He faces charges of first-degree murder & concealing a homicide. The Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jose Villarreal said in court that the former footballer had been seen burning fabric the night of his mother’s death on Sept. 14 & while booking Airbnb rentals with his mother's credit card & then flew out to Mexico the next morning. Public defender Robert Fox, who is representing Sergio, said in court that no one witnessed the alleged crime. “There’s no direct evidence, it’s all circumstantial,” Fox said. The Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez sided with the state, deciding to keep Brown in custody as, she said, the evidence presented proves he may be a flight risk & danger to the community. Cook County Judge Molina-Gonzalez denied Brown a pretrial release until his next court date on 11/22/23 for a felony preliminary hearing @ 9am.
11/22/23 Update: Motion hearing continued. Defendant in custody. Transmitted to Sheriff's office. Next arraignment hearing on 12/6/23 @ 9:30am.

They Started Playing Football as Young as 6. They Died in Their Teens and Twenties With C.T.E. [Gift article]

I know it was initially discussed if Brown might have CTE, and whether he played a career long enough for that to happen. This article talks about recent research that it isn't the 'big hits' or concussions that can result in CTE. Teenagers and young adults (athletes who died before age 30) who started playing contact football at a young age have been diagnosed with it. They primarily played high school and college and most did not make the NFL.

Brown did make it to the NFL and had a 7-year career on four teams.

IMO, since CTE can only be diagnosed posthumously, there is no "CTE defense." However his Instagram stories and other social media posts show him...well, rather out of it. Speculation: is he fit to stand trial?

We don't know whether Sergio has CTE or not. Regardless, IMO his action in killing his own mother reflected a very troubled person, certainly someone who is mentally ill. IMO he was probably under the influence of drugs.

IMO - his decline in mental stability came after he left the NFL. He was no longer a NFL player. Now he had to deal with the Real World without the perks of the NFL. I don't think he saved enough to support his entitled lifestyle. Who was then bankrolling his lifestyle? Maybe his mom?

Notice also, he did not take advantage of the opportunity to complete his degree at Notre Dame. ND offers any scholarship athlete the opportunity to come back and complete their degree, at no cost.

A status hearing in the case is slated for January 24 in Maywood.

Myrtle Brown was killed by blunt force trauma and left outside her home, court documents that prosecutors submitted in October alleged. The documents were included in Brown’s bond proffer, a procedure in which a defendant offers prosecutors information about a crime, sometimes as part of a plea deal.

6mil divided by 10 years is 600k a year which is what a good surgeon, attorney or investment banker could make. TBH Idiot is a hard word for those who haven’t learned to manage money. Many who come into money like he did don’t have the knowledge to manage it. I’d refrain from calling any one who doesn’t have the skills to manage money an idiot. there are to many variables.
Allegedly killing his own mother who was letting him live with her, stealing her money, assaulting her to the point of death, burning her clothing (destroying blood evidence ?), etc. ....
Plenty of reasons to identify SB as a bonafide idiot.
Omo.

May Myrtle rest in peace.

Keeping up with the Jones is a never ending game that can lead to a lifelong discontent and will set you up for failure - every time... Nowadays, no one seems to plead guilty, at least only a few. There's always that chance of freedom due to a technicality. moo

He is next due in court Jan. 24.

IDK..but he was fit enough to make travel reservations, use his Mother's credit card to book VRBO rentals, take his passport and find out where all the "tourist dance parties" were occurring. (A video I wish I had never viewed, ugh. Agreed..he is a little "out there" at times. But IMO, impaired not enough to not be willing to CYhisA)

TWO? I hope more info is released about this.
Could be she was involved with someone and that would explain how the other male DNA profile could be under her nails. Perhaps LE knows who this other profile belongs to and that person has been cleared.

Of course Sergio's defense attorney will run wild with it.

@Rosydecember - might be a bit early in asking - but just wondering if there is an update on the court site for his next hearing? TIA!

nbc - Chicago - OCT 2023

  1. Suspicious Evidence:
    • A search of the Browns’ home uncovered suspect evidence:
      • Ajax in the bathtub drain, possibly indicative of recent cleaning.
      • Myrtle Brown’s iPad, credit cards, and phones were missing.
      • Strangely, her cigarettes were left behind.
    • Cameras in the area captured Sergio Brown burning items in a firepit on the evening of September 14.

NOV 2023

investigators found similarities between DNA samples from under Myrtle Brown’s fingernails and a toothbrush in Sergio Brown’s bedroom.

[I do not see an update on his case.]
