I think the sheriff's statement regarding RL being a part of the investigation (but not labeled a suspect) is likely due to the evidence that is still being processed from the SW. Again, when that warrant was served on 3/17, it was specifically stated that the evidence collected would take 4 to 6 weeks to be processed, before LE would have those results. That puts us at ~ 4/24 before we can expect any info to be released.
Until then, they will neither call RL a suspect, nor will they state he had no involvement. We are still in the midst of the "either clear him or move him higher as a suspect". Limbo is never easy. Imagine what it must be like for LE, the residents of Delphi, and, especially, the girls' families. If they can maintain their decency through this excruciating time period, I feel like I owe it to them to do so, as well.
I don't believe RL is the perpetrator here, although, I almost hope I am wrong. If I am not, then this may be a much more difficult crime to solve. I don't believe it was random, either, and if the girls were targeted for whatever reason, we now live in a culture where many of us document our every move, our favorite places, etc, making it easier than it's ever been for predators to find out where we are, where we're going, who we'll be with, etc. Even the area can be cased from a distance via topo maps, creek flow charts, etc. A professional or SK(often not a huge difference) could pick a target, peripherally follow that person's SM, get info about their favorite places, and wait for a day and/or time the victim posts on SM that they will be there, and strike. They wouldn't have to be local, or even ever have been to the place before, IMO, although maybe a "dry run" or two might be part of the preparation.
Although I said I don't believe RL committed this crime, I am aware that whatever evidence comes back toward the end of the month should clarify this question one way or the other. We'll all have to be patient, I suppose.
