The Jackson County prosecutor says the Confession that 21-year-old Charles Hickman made in the death of ten-year-old Katie Collman of Crothersville was false.

Charges have been dropped against Hickman and a murder charge has been filed against another man, 38-year-old Anthony Stockelman of Seymour

The prosecutor said Hickman's confession that he killed Collman because she witnessed drug activity was a lie.

"He ran around with some of the people who lived near Katie Collman. There was a lot of other evidence surrounding what he said that seemed to make sense, until you get into the particulars," Stephen Pierson said. "The problem is, the other people he was naming weren't involved. They weren't there."

Hickman will remain in jail on a charge of child molestation, and could be charged with false informing for the fake confession.

When asked why Hickman confessed to the crime, Pierson replied “got me."

"While he’s not real articulate, he’s articulate enough,” Pierson said. “I have talked to some people who are out in left field, and Mr. Hickman did not resemble them.”

Hickman was arrested Feb. 2, and authorities said he confessed to being alone with Collman as she fell into a creek and drowned after she was abducted by others on Jan. 25. The kidnappers planned to scare her from talking about a methamphetamine operation she had seen, Hickman told investigators.

A cigarette butt found at the creek about 15 miles north of Crothersville led investigators to Stockelman. On April 6, two months after Katie’s funeral, Indiana State Police lab technicians notified investigators that DNA found on the fourth-grader’s body matched a sample provided by Stockelman.

On Friday, more than three months after Hickman's arrest, prosecutors dropped the murder charges against him and filed them against Anthony R. Stockelman, 38, Seymour.

Prosecutor Stephen Pierson also filed notice that he plans to seek the death penalty for Stockelman, citing Katie's age and the fact that she was sexually assaulted as the necessary aggravating circumstances.

"We had doubts early on as to some of the things he (Hickman) said," Pierson told reporters Friday after announcing the new charges. "He gave investigators four different statements and made a couple more on the (courthouse) sidewalk. He's just been all over the place."

The man originally charged with murdering 10-year-old Katlyn "Katie" Collman of Crothersville, Ind., was released yesterday on a $60,000 cash bond from the Jackson County Jail.

Charles "Chuckie" Hickman was being held on a charge that he molested a 13-year-old girl numerous times in 2002 and 2003. Police dropped murder charges against Hickman last week.

Jackson County Prosecutor Stephen Pierson said it took nine weeks and tens of thousands of dollars to chase down what turned out to be Hickman's false story. Pierson said he is considering charging Hickman with false informing.

Authorities and Hickman's attorney were unable to explain why he confessed to a crime he did not commit.

Anthony Stockelman, who previously had been charged with molesting Katie, now faces additional charges of murder and confinement. Authorities said DNA tests of semen found on the girl's body matched a sample provided by Stockelman.

Hickman was charged in the unrelated case after he was arrested in Katie's slaying. He is accused of molesting a then-13-year-old girl beginning in 2002 after allegedly showing her how to smoke meth, according to court documents.

Hickman could face from six to 20 years in prison if convicted of the molesting charge

Even though Anthony Stockelman is charged with killing 10-year old Katie Collman, police continue to investigate whether others were involved.

James Kilburn, Stockelman's attorney, said that points to the possibility that police are seeking other suspects.

"At least one other individual's been asked to take a DNA swab," Kilburn told WAVE 3 Investigator James Zambroski. "So I can't think of any other reason for that to be done."

Seven months ago she died at the hands of a killer.

Saturday a little girl's family and friends gathered in Crothersville to keep her memory alive.

In a town where the reminders are often at the turn of a corner, forgetting that awful day in January is just not easy.

Lisa Sweazy a family friend said, "We just kind of felt like we were the Mayberry town, you know, where you can sit just on your, on your porch swing, or you know, you can send your kid to the grocery store to pick up something and they're coming back."

"She didn't come back."

The prosecutor in a high-profile homicide case said a latex glove was found in the ceiling of the former home of the murder suspect.

Those currently living in a home where Anthony Stockelman was living when 10-year-old Katie Collman was killed in January told police about the glove a couple of weeks ago, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Julia Harding reported Wednesday.

Jackson County Prosecutor Stephen Pierson said the glove currently is being analyzed by state lab technicians. The news surfaced at a pretrial hearing in Brownstown Wednesday.

Stockelman's trial is scheduled to begin in February.

A Seymour man accused of abducting and killing a 10-year-old southern Indiana girl last winter now faces a charge of possessing a deadly weapon -- a toothbrush sharpened into a weapon -- behind bars.

The new allegations against Anthony Stockelman, 39, stem from a Dec. 7 conversation he had with a cellmate that was monitored by a Jackson County Jail officer, court documents filed by prosecutors said.

Stockelman said during that taped conversation he wanted a weapon to stab the jail commander and that he also wanted to kill county Prosecutor Stephen Pierson, according to court documents.

The cellmate sharpened the end a toothbrush for Stockelman, and was later found in a toothpaste holder in their cell by jailers, prosecutors said.

Stockelman, who was charged last year with abducting and killing Katie Collman of Crothersville, appeared Friday in Jackson Circuit Court for an initial hearing on the new charge.

During the hearing, a judge postponed Stockelman's murder trial from Feb. 21 to June 1.

Victim's Name Tattooed On Child Killer's Forehead
Man Abducted, Molested, Killed 10-Year-Old

POSTED: 9:10 am EDT September 28, 2006

The man who pleaded guilty to molesting and killing a 10-year-old southern Indiana girl now has her name tattooed on his forehead.

Anthony Stockelman, serving a life sentence at the Wabash Correctional Facility for killing Katie Collman, was found with the words "Katie's Revenge" on his forehead.

Corrections officials at the facility are investigating the matter, and have contacted state police to assist in the investigation.

Officials said Stockelman is now being held in protective custody. Officials said they aren't sure if the tattoo was done by another inmate. Katie's father John Neace heard about it from friends, and figures other prisoners are responsible.

Katie, of Crothersville, Ind., was found dead in a creek near Seymour, Ind., in 2005 after being abducted.

Stockelman is serving a life sentence for his role in the killing.

I THINK the other inmates held him down and did it--- that way everytime he looks in a mirror while in prison for life...he can never ever forget-----
but i suppose the next step will be the taxpayers having to pay for it to be lasered off---

hopefully they leave it on and makes him look at it every day

I just read about this. I think it's absolutely disgusting this guy had the audacity to have this done!!!:furious: What an absolute insult to the victim's family. It's bad enough he had to abduct, molest, and kill a 10-year-old girl, then this!!! GRRRRR!:behindbar :behindbar :behindbar  :furious:

I agree LinasK. I wouldn't want my childs name as a decorative feature gracing this scumbags body.

englishleigh- They should do that to molesters. Tattoo "MOLESTER" across the forehead so anywhere they go everyone will know not to let their kids near them ;) And even kids will know not to go near them.

I'll pay another inmate to remove it with a shank, if you want.
