Interview with Maya D at Lowell...

I agree with the not giving credence to anyone making claims while incarcerated. I admire all that MD has accomplished while in prison and that she found a way to deal with the murder she committed. The WS's that are in agreement that Casey should face the death penalty, I dont believe think that one can be rehabilitated UNLESS they would feel different if Casey admitted to her crime. So I guess my question is would you offer Casey the same trust and compassion and believe she was a changed person if she said she did it and she was sorry? I'm not thinking I could trust her no matter what she did or said at this point. MD was a gang member and we only know about the crime she is doing time for, we dont really know what else she has criminally participated in. So its really tough to decide if shes credible or not. Personally I dont dislike her less because she did not kill a 2 year old I dislike them both equally for taking someones life. IMO

I am one of the people that feel that Casey should receive the death penalty. I have my reasons for it. IF Casey came forward, admitted what she had done, showed remorse for what she had done, proved that she was truly sorry for what she has done then I would rethink my position. Unfortunately Casey has done none of those things. Casey is a different type of person than Maya is. Maya has a conscience, Casey does not. Maya is involved in helping others not go down the same path that she went, Casey is not. Maya feels remorse for what she has done, Casey does not. Did Maya do the unthinkable? Yes, she did. Is she serving her time for it? Yes, she is. Maya also is making herself into a better person and learning from the horrible crime that she committed. Can a person really change? I believe that they can, if they want to. Casey has shown to me that she does not have the right mindset to change, to feel remorse.......Casey thinks she did nothing wrong.

On other sites (not this one) I have read some comments that people believe Casey should be let out of jail and receive no prison time. The reason behind their thinking? Casey only killed her own child, she has no other children so everyone else is safe from her and she is not likely to commit murder again. I had to shake my head and wonder what type of person would think that much less say it out loud. If a person (especially a mother) can kill their own child that they carried for 9 months in the womb, gave birth to, took care of for 2 plus years can kill their child then they can kill anyone. No one is safe from Casey. Anytime someone "does her wrong" she could do the same to them.

All of the above are my opinion.

Thanks for this. Also it was explained to me that just because the DP is on the table, doesn't mean she'll get that sentence but still, people talk as if they want her to hang before we even get to the trial and that bothers me. I watched a TV show the other night about a man in IL who was on deathrow for 14 years (I think) for killing and burning a couple. Two men in Paris, Illinois, were framed and sentenced. Luckily for them someone cared enough to go after their cases and they've been cleared but wth?

Sorry for O/T but this disturbs me to no end. Also, Maya states that she is "happy with thirty years" because she could have gotten the DP. When was her trial?
Apparently 3 years ago.

My mistake, I typed the order wrong. Maya has nothing to gain by turning Casey in, she didn't try to sell letters like Robyn did, and even Robyn didn't out herself, it was Maya who called the homicide division because it ate at her that Casey wasn't confessing and she came to believe Casey was guilty from Casey's complete lack of remorse. Maya called Thanksgiving weekend because it was a special time for her and it ate at her. Maya has a conscience. This is a tragic young woman who seems to have learned from her terrible mistake. I don't see her as a repeat offender. She's had time away from drugs and gangs to see the difference.

Which Thanksgiving weekend? It's unclear. When was Maya's trial?
She said to google her name. When I do, pages and pages come up regarding her input into KC's case but I've been unable to sort through to find the articles that relate directly to her case.

Where can we find out for sure? I read she plead guilty 26 February 2008 - a little over two years ago. When does one plead? Only at their trial?
Don't know, and I'm not in Florida... I would think that once you plead Guilty, you go straight to prison, no trial.

When further questioned, she said that KC would soak the rag with the chloroform and place it on the baby's face
Maya says she is giving this info now, because it it " the right thing to do" and has not asked for any time off her sentence.
Thoughts?
Respectfully snipped. My thoughts=Maya is a questionable witness r/t her crime. (Is she psychiatrically "stable" at this point in her life?)

But maybe the duct tape around the head was to keep a chloroformed rag in place to keep Caylee asleep for a loooooooong time? Chloroform inhaled is a very short acting unless it was taped on top of the nose and mouth.

I have also wondered if the chloroform in this case is only a red herring, but perhaps is related to chemicals in pool water (Was Caylee intentionally drown? Was pool water the source of the chloroform in the car trunk?) Chloroform is found in pool water. See below reference article below.

"The amount of trihalomethane (chloroform) absorbed over a three-hour period by a six-year-old boy when using a chlorinated freshwater swimming pool containing 500 μg/liter of trihalomethanes, has been estimated to be 2.82 mg."

During the interview Kathi mentions that Maya has 27 years left on her sentence. 27 from 30 is 3 so I would have to say that Kathi did her homework before the interview and knew exactly how long Maya still had to serve.

Thats just crazy...not thinking she capable, I would not place any bets on that call.

Let's see Maya blames herself for her victims death, turned herself in.

KC parties for 31 days, blames someone else, anyone else and wants "one more day".

Who is credible and who would be willing to take a polograph? JMO

The A's did not use clorine in their pool. They used a natural environmental safe solution.

How would they prove she is telling the truth?

That who is telling the truth? Wouldn't a polygraph work for a truth or a lie, no matter who it is? Also if referring to Casey, IF she decides to be honest and come clean there are some things that we do know for sure such as how many pieces of duct tape was on Caylee, how many days she was in the wooded area, how many days (about) she was in the trunk of the car, etc.

Sorry I was thinking out loud there...I hope Maya takes a poly about her conversation with Casey. That would help me in a big way..

Not only does she not stand to gain anything ,she was hoping the Media would not learn about it because she stands to lose a lot- from the negative effects inside a jail..

Wow! Thanks for that info.. Toss out "the chloroform in the car trunk was from the swimming pool" defense strategy.

What makes you think she didn't? Why would LE just take her word for it. It's an investigation and Maya has nothing to lose by submitting to one. Nothing. JMO

I have a feeling that one has been done. I don't think Kathi Belich would want another 'Waiting for the other shoe to drop moment' after the River Cruz story of incriminating photos fizzled out, and I bet Maya took one and passed.. I just don't see KB taking the word of another con as to what did or didn't occur..

Here's what I found ~

09 January 2007 - Maya committed murder.

28 January 2007 - Maya arrested for armed carjacking.

15 October 2007 - Maya and two men were charged with first-degree murder.

26 February 2008 - Maya was sentenced by Judge Tim Shea.*

19 March 2008 (article dated)* ~ ... was sentenced by OCJ Tim Shea on February 26. In a plea deal, she pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and agreed to testify against two fellow gang members charged in her case.

"... a third defendant, Maya Derkovic, 19, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. She testified against the other two. ..."

November 2008 ~ the two men were found guilty. Sentencing is set for January 2009.

26 March 2010, Case No. 5D10-330
"Petitioner, Maya Derkovic seeks a belated appeal of a judgment and sentence pursuant to Florida Rule of Appellate Procedure 9.141(c). ...
PETITION DISMISSED"

I just figured the news would be out on that if it happened. So I should have added to my post if they did I wish they would release the results. Did LE find her credible I did not read anything on their opinion, if I missed it can you direct me to it.

I would think if the statement is out there from LE they know she is credible. Why release her statement only to have it shot down? Does not make sense. Not everyone in jail lies. JMO
