(snip)
Early Wednesday water came over a levee in the town of Braithwaite in Plaquemines Parish, WVUE reports. It's unclear if this levee system is one that the parish built, which protects just the parish or one that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built, which protects all of New Orleans and beyond.
There are reports of homes with flooding of 5-7 feet of water in the parish and at least one family is trapped in the attic of their home according to WVUE.

This storm is just not going anywhere anytime soon. 75 percent of N.O. is without power. Levee's around Orleans Parish holding up fine.

I'm hoping everybody checks in soon.

I can't get any of the web cams to work that are by any of the rivers. Except this one. I spent a couple of hours watching it late yesterday, and it was pretty amazing watching the waves. It's 2 pictures that update every minute. It seems to have weathered the storm okay from what I can see.

Nuts! Storm surge over topping levee. Hope they had evacuated.

Updated at 7:42 a.m. ET: Hurricane Isaac made its second landfall in southeastern Louisiana early Wednesday, sending up to 12 feet of water into people’s homes as an 18-mile stretch of levee was overtopped, officials said.

Officials in Plaquemines Parish said Coast Guard personnel and others were attempting to rescue two men stranded on top of one levee and others trapped in houses.

The storm surge also flooded areas of the Mississippi coast with water rising several feet in some parts, authorities said. Weather Channel meteorologist Paul Goodloe reported a number of homes had been flooded in Biloxi Bay, Miss., according to a message on Twitter.

JMO...but these weather people are nuts. It's almost comical. They have a hard time containing their excitement.

Another disaster possibly waiting for gulf coasts residents when Isaac has come and gone. One that can linger long after the flood waters receded, threatening the health of the residents.

As Hurricane Isaac batters the Gulf Coast, some experts are warning that the storm could threaten more than levees, power lines and gas prices.

Isaac's high winds and rains, they speculate, could also stir up remnant crude oil from the BP's Deepwater Horizon spill -- exposing more residents and wildlife to its potentially toxic effects.

"This is another disaster on top of the hurricane that we're going to have to deal with," Garret Graves, chairman of Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, told The Huffington Post. "The threat is not insignificant."

Up to 1 million barrels of oil are estimated to remain in the Gulf of Mexico. That oil remains, Graves said, because BP has failed to clean it all up in the more than two years since the tragedy. "That's four to five times the oil that was spilled with the Exxon Valdez," he added.

Nearly half a million people in Isaac's path are without electricity. It will be awhile before some of our posters can check in. Be safe my friends.

At 7:35 a.m. ET, more than 450,000 homes and businesses were without power as a result of the storm, according to power company Entergy.

"It's something I've never seen before,” Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said. “I rode out Katrina, and my home has more damage now. It has not let up one time throughout this whole event. The driving rain, all the telephone poles down in Plaquemines Parish. This is not a Category 1 storm."

It is a category 1 but it's big. Ike was category 2 and also very big. The categories might not accurately describe the damage expected because there are other factors involved.
