Global attention has turned to the hospital amid reports suggesting several patients, including children, have died in what the hospital’s director has called “catastrophic” conditions.
Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, the director-general of the Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza, said Monday that medical staff had refused an Israel Defense Forces evacuation order because they fear approximately 700 patients would die if they were left behind.
“The problem is not the doctors, it’s the patients. And if they are left behind, they will die, and if they are transferred, they will die on the way. This is the problem: We are talking about 700 patients,” Al-Bursh told CNN on Monday.

A witness inside al-Shifa has told the BBC’s correspondent in Palestine, Rushdi Abu Alouf, that soliders have entered the complex and “fired a smoke bomb that caused people to suffocate”, Khader Al-Zaanoun told Abu Aloud.“I saw the soldiers entering the specialised surgical department,” Al-Zaanoun said before contact ended.

I think they believed other countries would step in and help them. Oops
I don't think that Hamas expected the reaction they got from Israel. I think they expected to be holding all the cards, and that they could take their time negotiating the release of 6000 criminals in exchange for the 240 hostages. I think they fully expected to have the upper hand after the October 7 massacre.
