Frustration as hundreds queue for cooking gas in Gaza

Adnan El-Bursh

Since the truce started, people have been queuing for supplies including cooking gas

There are people for as far as the eye can see.

Deir al-Balah lies in central Gaza. It’s supposed to be a "safe" city compared with the devastated north, its population bursting with the displaced.

Hundreds are in the queue for cooking gas and some people say they have been waiting here three days, sleeping on the side of the street in the cold, in the hope of being able to cook something hot.

As the hundreds wait, some sitting on their gas cylinders, tempers fray.

"Where are all Arabs and Muslims?" a middle-aged woman shouts angrily as she waits in line for gas. "Where are all the defenders of human rights? You've left the Palestinian people to suffer, go hungry and be destroyed."

Desperation and frustration are visible in her face, despair lurking in the background. "We've been waiting in line to fill one gas cylinder since early morning," she says. "I performed my morning prayers while standing."

She tells me she was displaced from Beit Hanoun in the north, just 2km (1.2 miles) from the boundary with Israel. She's now living with her family in a UN school in the city of Deir al-Balah in the centre of Gaza.

"I can't describe the destruction," she says. "Entire families have been erased from civil records. They were killed under their houses. Gaza has been completely destroyed. Have mercy on us."

I understand your reasoning. I too worry that it could make things worse. I do wonder what is officially being held back. I don't think they are all in good condition.. maybe it's stated that way to keep things moving along. It's been said they have lost weight, which I'd expect, but if they were physically harmed back on or close to Oct 7th, that would have plenty of time to heal before now.. we wouldn't see those signs.. and all have had pants and much of their bodies hidden from view.

I think for as many hostages that have been released, we haven't really heard much about or from any of them. The ones we have heard about were those that we could all see were in worse shape.. one needed flown immediately, several in wheelchairs, one being carried by HAMAS, one on crutches.. those updates I'd expect since we could all see something was wrong. I am afraid what we have heard about the cages and some of the bad treatment is just a tiny bit of what actually happened.
some of them come back to news about their parents or other relatives and friends being dead, so how happy is that? (And yes- lots of people dead in Gaza too, so plenty of tragedy to go around.)

Looks like even the IDF underestimated the level of cruelty and evil recklessness that Hamas was capable of.
Yet if they would have treated them like they could do something like they did Oct 7th, then the world would have been up in arms against Israel about how they are treating them without cause.

Darn if they do and darn if they don't. Seems they are blamed for not seeing Oct 7th coming and not preventing it, blamed for reacting to it, blamed for everything.

I think you will see it more in the next day or so. Hamas needs to ration and stretch out the remaining hostages to keep the cease fire in place as long as possible. We don't know how many live hostages they have, probably not that many. So then will need excuses for not turning them over or for turning over 1-2 instead of 10 at a time etc.
they gave the 10 mos old baby to another organization..... I am amazed that they know who they have where... if they do...

They don't. But bear in mind, this starts with "Hamas has said..." MOO

Israel-Hamas war live updates: More hostages to be released as Gaza truce is extended (nbcnews.com)
Hamas has said it does not have custody of all the hostages, claiming that the whereabouts of roughly 100 are unknown. A diplomat with knowledge of the hostage talks previously said Hamas had alleged that "some Israelis were kidnapped by individual Palestinian gangs or smugglers."

Excellent reminder on where it's headed.
Probably most of the prisoners Israel released, were women and children that were never criminally charged.

Will Netanyahu cave and release Marwan Barghouti.
I believe he'll have pressure coming at him from the North, East West and South to do so in exchange for Israeli soldiers.
Bolding mine.
We don't know that they have committed no crimes as of yet.
And many of these "children" are older teens.
It's doubtful that the IDF arrests people who are just peacefully going about their business, doing nothing violent.

Generally ... let's say for example, a young Palestinian woman tries to set an innocent Israeli on fire by detonating a gas container --- this will most likely result in an arrest and jail time.
But aside from those possibilities, these criminals who are being released from Israeli prisons should be supremely grateful.
Especially as it appears that more Palestinians are being released, than Israelis.
Omo.

Philippine president Ferdinand Marocs has said he is “very happy” to announce that Noralyn Babadilla is now safely back in Israel, adding that “all Filipinos affected by the war have been accounted for”.

Noralyn, who was released on Tuesday, was the second Filipino to be released by Hamas. Filipino caregiver Gelienor “Jimmy” Pacheco was among the group of hostages released on the first day of the temporary truce.

Marcos said in a statement: “We extend our sincerest gratitude to Israeli authorities for facilitating Noralyn’s release, and for all ongoing assistance to Filipinos in Israel. Our gratitude also goes to Egypt and the State of Qatar for their crucial role in this process over the past several weeks.”

About 30,000 Filipinos work in Israel, mainly in the care sector. Most live away from the conflict areas.

Thai foreign minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara has said he welcomes the release of two more Thai hostages that had been held by Hamas in Gaza.

“Happy to personally welcome 2 additional Thai hostages just released and arrived at the hospital in Tel Aviv,” he posted on the social media platform X.

Nineteen Thai hostages have so far been released, while the foreign ministry says 13 more remain in captivity. There were 39 Thai nationals killed in the 7 October attack by Hamas.

Noralin Babadilla was the second of two Filipinos released from captivity in Gaza during the truce in the Israel-Hamas war. With her release, “all Filipinos affected by the war have been accounted for,” writes President Ferdinand Marcos.

Babadilla, who lived in Israel and worked as a caregiver, was visiting friends in Kibbutz Nirim with her husband during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, the Israeli embassy in Manila said in a statement. Her husband, Gideon Babani, was killed during the attack, and Babadilla was taken hostage.

Marcos thanks Israel for facilitating Babadilla’s release, and thanks Egypt and Qatar “for their crucial role in this process over the past several weeks.”

“At what is now known as Hostage Square, just outside the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, a few hundred people gathered tonight to support the Bibas family. Yarden and his wife, Shiri, were kidnapped by Hamas from the Nir Oz kibbutz on Oct. 7, along with their two boys — 4-year-old Ariel and Kfir, now 10 months old.”

Yarden, Ariel, Shiri, Kfir Bibas.

'Emily Hand's father vows to help her through the trauma of spending her ninth birthday running from missile strikes in Gaza -

as hopes rise the ceasefire could be extended.

The father of a young girl who was held hostage by Hamas for 50 days has vowed to do 'whatever it takes'
to help his daughter recover after revealing how she spent her ninth birthday running from missile strikes in Gaza.

Four days after his daughter's emotional release, Mr Hand said:
'She was a happy noisy kid,
now she whispers.
She's been terrorised by terrorists in hell but as her dad it's my job to make it better and I will.'

The first thing she asked for after her release was her phone so that she could watch a video of her favourite pop star Beyonce.

Mr Hand has vowed to do 'whatever it takes to get Emily back to where she was'.

Emotional footage was shared over the weekend of the moment that Emily was reunited with her father and big sister.

Mr Hand said that she ran to him and hugged him in a state of shock because she thought that he had been kidnapped as well.

His ex-wife Narkis, 52,
was murdered on October 7 when 400 Hamas terrorists rampaged through the Be'eri kibbutz near Gaza.

Since her release Emily has told her father little about the conditions in captivity in Gaza, which she now refers to as 'the box', but said that
'nobody hit' her.

Mr Hand revealed that Emily was not - as believed - kept in the horrifying Hamas tunnels.

She was instead moved from safe house to safe house at the height of Israel's retaliatory strikes on Gaza.

Mr Hand explained:
'She must have been absolutely terrified - an eight-year-old girl being led by strangers from one blown-up shell of a house to the next in the middle of a war zone.'

He said he was horrified by the thought of her spending her ninth birthday in the tunnels but admitted it was actually much worse running through war-torn Gaza.

Emily, who has returned pale and thin, is still in a state of shock and is being looked after by specialists in a hospital near Tel Aviv."

Israel holds kids/teens/adults without ever pressing charges or a trial.
This can go on for months or years.
Their lawyers are not even told by Israelis why they're being held.

A daily message to the residents of Gaza after the extension of the temporary operational pause:
  • Do not try moving to northern Gaza, which is considered a war zone. You can only move to the south of Wadi Gaza via the Salah al-Din Road.
  • It is forbidden to approach within a kilometer of the border.
  • Entry into the sea is prohibited.
For your safety, obey these instructions.
