Blinken says US working to establish 'safe areas' in Gaza

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has just held a joint press conference with Qatari prime minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in Doha.
Here are some of the key points:
  • Blinken said he had asked Israel to take "every possible precaution" to avoid Gaza civilian deaths, and recognised that many families in Gaza are suffering "through no fault of their own"
  • He confirmed that the US was involved in discussions with Israel and "leading international organisations" to establish "safe areas" in Gaza
  • Blinked said details would emerge "in the coming days"
  • Efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza are "complicated" by the fact that Hamas are continuing to "use innocent civilians as human shields"
  • The US government and Qatar are working to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza
  • The US will "ensure Israel has what it needs" to defend itself, Blinken said, adding that "every country" needs to condemn Hamas' actions and hold them accountable

US pressing for safe zones for Gaza civilians

Barbara Plett Usher
US State Department correspondent

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken talked with Israel's government about the need to establish safe areas for civilians in Gaza.

This is what a state department official told journalists earlier today before travelling to Qatar, the second stop on Blinken’s Middle East trip.

He had little to say about UN warnings that a 24-hour evacuation order for northern Gaza issued by the Israel Defense Forces would have disastrous consequences.

But he underlined that the administration was working with the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to create these safe locations, possibly in the south of the strip.

Blinken’s message has been laser focused on rock solid support for Israel, and on restraint in the region – a warning for other armed Iran-backed groups not to join the fight.

In Qatar he’s also discussing attempts to rescue hostages held in Gaza. Doha has contacts with Hamas and has taken the lead in trying to facilitate their release.

Critics have denounced America’s unwavering support for Israel as a green light for forceful Israeli military actions in Gaza.

A Reuters videographer has been killed while working in southern Lebanon, the news agency said.

A Reuters statement said:

Issam was part of the agency’s crew in southern Lebanon who was providing a live video signal, Reuters said.

Oh no. I have been worrying about the camera crew on live cams, getting the visuals broadcast to the world.

Over the past day, the IDF conducted raids in the territory of the Gaza Strip in an effort to eliminate the threat of terrorists and weapons in the area and locate hostages.
IDF soldiers searched and collected evidence that would assist in the effort to locate hostages.
In addition, IDF soldiers thwarted terrorist cells and infrastructure located in the area, including a Hamas cell that fired anti-tank missiles toward Israeli territory.
In addition, the IAF continued its strikes on Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip, as well as strikes on anti-tank missile launchers immediately after they attacked Israel.

I see the conspiracy theories are making their way about. Israel did NOT allow this to happen. They simply cannot afford to allow wars "to happen."

Of course there were security failures and there were warnings that may have been 'geo-misplaced' by Israel. I use the word geo-misplaced as I suspect Israel may have thought the threat was to the west bank area where the population of Jewish persons is more highly concentrated than the Kibbutz' dotting the south and bordering the Gaza.

I'll toss in this link for a good read. Hindsight is always 20/20, but this piece was published in August.

The answers to just "what went wrong" to allow this to ever happen in the first place will be forthcoming at some point in the future. It will studied to death so that it is never allowed to happen again.

But that time is not now. Israel has a war to fight right now. But I guarantee Israel will learn the lessons of what happened with this failure of security.

The simply HAVE TO learn those lessons because the minute they ever lose a war --- they will cease to exist. That is their reality. Every. Single. Day. They did not "allow" this war "to happen".

Footnote 1 is seeming very apt today.

Very true regarding hindsight. I wish security and intel had been beefed up, as Netanyahu addressed the UN just a couple or three weeks ago (Sept 22) warning of fanatics in Iran.

Now you know, Ladies and Gentlemen, you know there’s a fly in this ointment, because rest assured, the fanatics ruling Iran will do everything they can to thwart this historic peace. Iran continues to spend billions to arm its terror proxies. It continues to extend its terror tentacles in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, South America, even North America. They even tried to assassinate the Secretary of State of the United States of America. They even tried to assassinate the National Security Advisor of the United States of America. This tell you all you need to know about Iran’s murderous intentions and Iran’s murderous nature.

Agreed.
If nothing else, if Hamas didn't allow them to stockpile food/fuel/etc., they still had time to flee.
Omo.
Egypt has closed the borders to Gazans (nobody besides the US wants refugees anymore).

Furthermore, armed Palestinian groups have pulled enough stunts in neighboring countries over the generations to cause local welcome mats to get rolled up- even before these countries got tired of refugees.

Sure, Gazan civilians showing up at the Egyptian crossing with enough cash or with an Egyptian wife, or both, will find the welcome mat unrolled and be allowed in.

But... the vast majority of Gazans in the worlds biggest human corral have no where to flee to.

Janez Lenarčič, the European commissioner for crisis management, has spoken out about the need to respect international humanitarian law.

Israel “has the right to defend itself,” he said, but “this right must be exercised in compliance with” international humanitarian law.

“Civilians must be protected,” he said, adding that “critical infrastructure must not be targeted” and “safe and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid must be ensured.”

His comments come as Commission president Ursula von der Leyen visits Israel, where she said “I know that how Israel responds will show that it is a democracy.”

US defense secretary: "This is no time for neutrality, or for false equivalence"

A forceful US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin pledged unwavering US support to Israel in the wake of the deadly Hamas attack, stressing that “this is no time for neutrality, or for false equivalence or for excuses for the inexcusable.”

“In times like these, sometimes the best thing that a friend can do is just to show up and to get to work,” said Austin emphatically offering full US support to Israel at a joint news conference.

The defense secretary who is traveling to Israel today offered a soft reminder to the Israelis that “this is a time for resolve and not revenge” as the IDF is under scrutiny for causing civilian casualties in Gaza in response to the Hamas attack.

“Democracies like ours are stronger and more secure when we uphold the laws of war,” Austin said.

Austin also pledged continued US support with munitions. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel is expecting the second shipment of lethal military aid from the US today as Israel warns civilians to evacuate Gaza.

“US security assistance to Israel will flow in at the speed of war,” said Austin.
This is such a contradictory statement.

I thought I read that the reason Israel was caught off guard is because Hamas used old fashioned (for lack of a better word) ways to launch this attack - meaning they did not use technology and flew under the radar. Did anyone else read that?

Can't believe they didn't cut it off sooner

All internet service will be cut off from Gaza starting soon.
I wonder if even the terrorists were using the internet and maybe they could track some of them or use that to their advantage when they communicated and could intercept any of it?

The Hamas terror group publishes propaganda footage showing its members holding young Israeli children and babies in a kibbutz in southern Israel last weekend, in an apparent attempt to downplay its murderous attack.

The video shows terrorists taking a number of small children and infants out of homes in Kibbutz Holit.

One clip shows the terrorists giving a child a glass of water to drink, and another clip shows terrorists rocking a baby in a stroller.

Parents of the children are nowhere to be seen.

There is evidence showing that Palestinian terrorists murdered several young children during its attack last weekend.

It's war. Israel is warning civilians to get out of the way, but after that, it's not really something Israel is responsible for. Not at the moment, anyway.

War is hell. Nothing about it is good or easy (not suggesting anyone thinks it is, of course).

I wonder if ships could be used as housing? idk

BBm: I was also wondering about cruise ships maybe being a way to move more people out of the way. On Saturday, there were two cruise ships at the port when the attack came. They waited for their passengers to return before leaving. One ship had to leave without all of their passengers. I would hate to be on such a big target but it could be a way to move some of the Palestinians to leave. Maybe Egypt would let them dock? IDK but just a thought.

CNN's @JakeTapper
: "Egypt, Jordan, I mean, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, all these countries that prepare--that talk about how much they care about the Palestinians, they could help right now. They could help the Palestinians escape. They could say okay, stop bombing and we will go in there and we will help Gaza, like, become a thriving society. They could do all sorts of things. They have money, by the way. Where are they?"

"Israel will most likely use its special forces.
And these enjoy an excellent reputation.

Among several special units of Israel, the most famous is Sayeret Matkal, which is the equivalent of, for example, the American Delta or the British SAS (Special Air Service).
Their numbers and structure, like most special forces, are secret, but their strength is estimated at approximately 300 soldiers.
It is worth adding that one of the prime ministers of Israel, Ehud Barak, was a soldier of the unit.

This is a unit created for, for example, rescuing hostages. In last weekend's attack, the Palestinians captured several hundred of them.

This time - according to our expert - they will not be used to recapture them.

'Especially since the hostages are probably transferred, divided into several or a dozen subgroups and are not kept together.

If the Palestinians flaunt where the hostages are, it could be an ambush for special forces', he adds.

Israeli soldiers could easily turn from hunters to prey. He also explains that special forces usually choose the time and place of the attack.
The element of surprise is used, and in this particular case it is unlikely.

In addition to Sayeret Matkal, there are other special units in the IDF.

Flotilla 13 and the Yaltam Unit, subordinated to the naval command, are intended for maritime operations.
The land forces have their own Oz Brigade.
Interestingly, the engineering forces corps also has a special unit.

This is the Yahalom Unit, and its soldiers are prepared, for example, to fight in tunnels drilled by the Palestinians.
In addition, there are also units subordinated to the Air Force and one unit at the disposal of the IDF General Staff.

Next in order are the air forces, which are extremely important for the overall operation of the IDF, because they are often used operationally, as we see now when they bombed the Gaza Strip.

'Now they will start dealing with Hamas.
And a radical one at that.
So that no trace of them will remain.
Israel is preparing to enter the Gaza Strip, so armored and mechanized troops will move.

It will be a dirty, bloody operation, meaning fighting in cities and tedious "cleaning" them of militants.

Quarter by quarter,
building by building,
basement by basement.

And fighting in the tunnels where Hamas fighters are also hiding'."
