What are the roots of the Israel-Palestine conflict?

Chris McGreal

As with almost everything to do with this conflict, it depends on whom you ask.

[…] the starting point for many people is the United Nations’ vote in 1947 to the partition of land in the British mandate of Palestine into two states – one Jewish, one Arab – in the wake of the destruction of much of European Jewry in the Holocaust.

Neither the Palestinians nor the neighbouring Arab countries accepted the founding of modern Israel. Fighting between Jewish armed groups, which the British regarded as terrorist organisations, and Palestinians escalated until the armies of Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan and Syria invaded after Israel declared independence in May 1948.

With Israel’s new army gaining ground, an armistice agreement in 1949 saw new de facto borders that gave the fledgling Jewish state considerably more territory than it was awarded under the UN partition plan.

What happened to the Palestinians who were living there?

About 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled – about 85% of the Arab population of the territory captured by Israel – and were never allowed to return.

Palestinians called the exodus and eradication of much of their society inside Israel the Nakba, or “catastrophe”, and it remains the traumatic event at the heart of their modern history.

Arabs who remained in Israel as citizens were subject to official discrimination. They were placed under military rule for nearly two decades, which deprived them of many basic civil rights. Much of their land was expropriated and Arab Israeli communities were deliberately kept poor and underfunded.

[…]

How did the occupied Palestinian territories become occupied?

In 1967, Israel launched what it said was a pre-emptive defensive war against Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The attack caught Arab governments by surprise and saw Israel achieve rapid victories including seizing the Sinai peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan. The six-day war was a spectacular military success for Israel. Its capture of all of Jerusalem and newly acquired control over the biblical lands called Judea and Samaria in Israel opened the way to the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which became central to the conflict.

Israel placed the Arab population of the West Bank under military rule, which is enforced to this day.

[…]

Where are we now?

Although western governments still pay lip service to a two-state solution, there has been no progress toward an agreement under Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has repeatedly said he will never accept a Palestinian state.

His present government includes far-right parties that openly advocate the annexation of all or part of the West Bank to Israel and the continued governance of the Palestinians without full rights or the vote. Israeli and foreign human rights groups say Israel has increasingly carved out a form of apartheid in the occupied territories.

Hamas’s killing of more than 1,200 Israelis now moves the conflict into uncharted territory.

Agreed.
Some of those countries you mention are certainly not impoverished and could invite the people of Gaza to live in their nation.
Why aren't they doing this ?
It would add workers and help their economy.
Omo.
Because Palestinians have a habit over trying to overthrow the governments of countries that allow them refuse. Plus there are already a bunch of "Refugee Camps" all over the Middle East causing issues, infighting and causing deaths.

That's just not feasible. Likely there are patients in surgeries that will not be finished in two hours. And critically ill people perhaps on ventilators that cannot be moved.

And where will they go? Out in a field without electricity or water?

I can't find this hospital on Google maps. Does anyone know where this is in Gaza?
I would hope that this hospital if it's in the evacuation zone that was announced 24 hours ago would not be doing complicated surgery right now, short of emergency type do or die right now surgery.. they were already at risk of being bombed so hopefully they had a plan for what to do if they were bombed.

I am curious if they have intel on some of the terrorists and when they say things like you have 2 hours to evacuate.. they watch. I'd imagine the terrorists would be scrambling, some chatter would be happening.. something would be moving/changing

Putin ready to take advantage of Israel-Gaza war

Steve Rosenberg
BBC Russia editor

It's tempting to view Vladimir Putin as a James Bond-style villain sitting at a giant control panel, in a mountain hideout, sowing chaos around the world.

He presses one button and there's unrest in the Balkans.

He presses another and the Middle East explodes.

It's tempting… but probably inaccurate. It exaggerates the Kremlin leader's global influence.

Yes, Russia has ties to Hamas and has become a close ally of Iran. According to the US, Moscow and Tehran now have a fully-fledged defence partnership.

But that doesn't mean Moscow had direct involvement in, or prior knowledge of, the Hamas attack on Israel.

Netanyahu: Counter-offensive only the beginning

Benjamin Netanyahu has just addressed the nation and said that Israel's counter-offensive in Gaza is "only the beginning".

The Times of Israel suggests this was the first time Netanyahu has done an address on Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.

Netanyahu: Israel's counteroffensive in Gaza 'is just the beginning'

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “eradicate” Hamas and said Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza “is just the beginning”.

Netanyahu, in televised remarks on Friday, said Israel was striking at its enemies “with unprecedented might”.

I would like to emphasise: this is just the beginning. Our enemies have only started paying the price I will not detail now what is yet to come, but I would like to tell you this is just the beginning.
He said he had spoken with President Joe Biden and other world leaders, and had rallied “tremendous” international support for Israel.

We’re going to eradicate Hamas and we’re going to bring victory. It’s going to take time, but we’re going to come out of this war stronger than ever.

'We’re fighting for the homeland, and we’re fighting like lions'

Here's a bit more from what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in his short statement a few minutes ago.

"Today, everyone knows that we’re fighting for the homeland, and we’re fighting like lions,” he said, according to the Times of Israel.

“We’ll never forget the Hamas onslaught. We are striking our enemies with unprecedented might,” Netanyahu continued.

“We will destroy Hamas, and we will win, but it will take time,” he added during his speech which was televised after the Jewish sabbath had begun.

Powerful piece, imo, from Guardian's Jonathan Freedland
( In case anybody unfamiliar with him, he's a prominent Jewish political commentator in UK)

70 people killed in Israeli strikes while fleeing Gaza City, says Hamas

Israeli airstrikes on convoys fleeing Gaza City killed 70 people, mostly women and children, the press office of Hamas said.

Hamas said the cars were struck in three places as they headed south from Gaza City.

It was not immediately clear who the target of the airstrikes was, or whether militants were among the passengers.

The Palestinian health ministry in Gaza corroborated Hamas’s statement. NBC reported meeting people in hospitals who lost family members from air strikes while fleeing from the north to the south.

Important speech to address the morale of the Israeili people and to remind them that this will take time. Also with historical and national symbolism - "Never Forget" and "fighting like lions," the lions of Judah connection, I assume.

Interesting thread from the Editor of Politico Pro

am just quoting the first 3 tweets in his thread, otherwise post is too long

'A few thoughts on Palestinians' unhappy situation, based on months living there (some years ago) and much reading since then. Looking beyond Hamas's unforgivable terrorism, it's true Palestinians have an intolerable existence. But it's wrong to blame only Israel for this.

Palestinians are kept in a state of misery by surrounding Arab countries, which refuse to integrate even 5th generation descendants of Palestinian refugees from 1948. There are 6 million Palestinians in permanent concrete "camps" who lack access to basic services.

The governments of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon are guilty of this. So is the Palestinian Authority: Palestinians from the West Bank have some degree of freedom, but those historically from Israel are confined to horrid camps (where I volunteered as a teacher when younger)

‘Where is humanity?’: Humza Yousaf’s mother-in-law sends tearful video from Gaza

Elizabeth El-Nakla travelled from Scotland last week to visit family in Gaza and first minister says she is now trapped

The mother-in-law of Scotland’s first minister, who is trapped in Gaza, has asked “where is humanity”, as she described conditions in the Palestinian enclave under Israeli bombardment.

In a video posted online from a settlement in the centre of the Gaza Strip, Elizabeth El-Nakla pleaded for help, saying: “Where’s people’s hearts in the world, to let this happen in this day and age?”

El-Nakla, the mother of Humza Yousaf’s wife, Nadia, had travelled from her home in Scotland last week to visit family in Gaza with her husband, Maged. The couple have been trapped since Israel’s bombarded of Gaza in response to a deadly attack by Hamas at the weekend.

[…]

Speaking from Deir al-Balah, about 10 miles south-west of Gaza City, El-Nakla said the video would be her last, adding: “Everybody from Gaza is moving towards where we are.

“One million people, no food, no water – and still they’re bombing them as they’re leaving. Where are you going to put them? But my thought is – all these people in the hospital cannot be evacuated.

“Where is humanity? Where’s people’s hearts in the world, to let this happen in this day and age? May God help us, goodbye.”

US intelligence warned of the potential for violence days before Hamas attack

WashingtonCNN —
The US intelligence community produced at least two assessments based in part on intelligence provided by Israel warning the Biden administration of an increased risk for Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the weeks ahead of Saturday’s seismic attack on southern Israel, according to sources familiar with the intelligence.

One update from September 28 warned, based on multiple streams of intelligence, that the terror group Hamas was poised to escalate rocket-attacks across the border. An October 5 wire from the CIA warned generally of the increasing possibility of violence by Hamas. Then, on October 6, the day before the attack, US officials circulated reporting from Israel indicating unusual activity by Hamas — indications that are now clear: an attack was imminent.

[…]

Missed signs

Based on conversations with dozens of current and former intelligence, military and congressional officials, the view is coalescing among US officials and lawmakers that Israel’s failure to predict the explosion of simmering rage from Gaza was primarily due to a lack of imagination.

Hamas likely hid the planning of the operation through old-fashioned counterintelligence measures such as conducting planning meetings in person and staying off digital communications whose signals the Israelis can track. But US officials also believe that Israel had become complacent about the threat Hamas posed and failed to recognize key indicators that the group was planning for a large-scale operation.

Pro-Palestinian protests held around the world

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have continued across the world since Hamas attacked Israel last Saturday.

Gatherings have been reported in countries including Iraq, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

In Jordan, security forces reportedly clashed with protesters attempting to approach the border with Israel and the occupied territories.
