‘The most successful land-grab strategy since 1967’ as settlers push Bedouins off West Bank territory

Herders report violence driving them from their homes in accelerating, aggressive and highly effective campaign

(...)

This week the Bedouin community packed up most of their belongings and drove all the women, children and elderly people from the West Bank ridge they had called home for nearly four decades, perched above a spring and beside an archaeological site.

“They didn’t leave us air to breathe,” said Zawahri, 52, describing a months-long campaign of violence and intimidation that intensified in the last two weeks. First villagers were barred from grazing lands, and the spring, then violence reached their homes.

“They came into the village and destroyed houses and sheep pens, beat an 85-year-old man, scared our children. Slowly our lives became unlivable.”

(...)

This was not an individual tragedy. Men from Angels of Peace are part of a broad, violent and very successful political project to expand Israeli control of the West Bank that has accelerated, say activists, since the 7 October attacks by Hamas launched a war with Israel.

(...)

“This has been the most successful land-grab strategy since 1967,” said Yehuda Shaul, a prominent activist who is director of the Israeli Center for Public Affairs thinktank, and a founder of Breaking the Silence, an NGO that exposes military abuses in occupied areas.

(...)

About 450,000 Israelis have settled in what is now Area C of the West Bank – the area under full Israeli military and political control – since the occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1967, some motivated by religious or nationalistic reasons, and others by the cheaper cost of living.

Their presence is viewed by most of the international community as a major obstacle to lasting peace, but until recently most focus has been on communities of houses rather than herder outposts.

In September, the UN warned about rising settler violence targeting Palestinian herders and driving them from their homes and land.

(...)

Now with the Israeli military preparing for a ground invasion of Gaza, diplomats concerned about rescuing hostages in Gaza and averting regional war, and a national mood of fury after the massacre of 1,400 people on 7 October, there is little focus on the West Bank.

In a climate of fear for Palestinians – the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said soldiers and settlers have killed 62 Palestinians over 10 days – the displacement of herders has sped up, say activists.

(...)

Herder settlers living near the village of al-Mu’arrajat had begun stopping Palestinians, asking for their IDs and telling them they had 24 hours to leave their homes, said Alia Mlehat, 27.

They had blocked people from leaving the village, pulled people out of their cars, and driven between homes, she said. They all had assault rifles and sometimes shot into the air.

“Since the beginning of the war, no one can go anywhere,” she said. “It is a slow process of deepening fear … there is no way out, as the war has restricted our lives.”

(...)

“Palestinian herders should be self-reliant based on their established livelihoods. Instead they need humanitarian assistance because of settler violence and the failure of Israeli authorities to hold perpetrators accountable,” the UN OCHA report said.

The impact was so serious, it may amount to a war crime, the statement added. Along with demolitions, evictions and restrictions on movement and construction, the attacks on herders created “a coercive environment that contributes to displacement that may amount to forcible transfer, a grave breach of the Fourth Geneva convention”.

Cairo Summit of c.20 leaders- updates to previous post

Guardian adds
However, two diplomats have told Reuters that it is unlikely that a joint statement will materialise from the gathering due to sensitivities around calling for a ceasefire and whether to include mention of Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October and Israel’s right to defend itself.

The absence of a top official from the US, which is represented at the summit by its embassy Charge d’Affaires, and some key western leaders has also limited expectations.

speaking right now-
Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, tells the Cairo summit that he invited leaders to come to agreement for a roadmap to end the humanitarian disaster in Gaza and revive a path to peace, reports Reuters.

Border opens !!!

JERUSALEM — Twenty trucks carrying medicine, medical supplies and food crossed into Gaza on Saturday morning from Egypt, marking the first humanitarian aid to arrive in the territory since an Israeli bombardment campaign began two weeks ago.

As the trucks made their way through the Rafah border, hundreds of people gathered at the Gaza side, hoping to escape the violence that has beset the Palestinian territory. It was unclear whether anyone would be able to leave.

updates

Guardian:
The Israeli military has said that aid entering Gaza will only go to southern areas and that there is no fuel going in, reports Reuters.

Jordan’s King Abdullah says that forced displacement or internal displacement of Palestinians would constitute a war crime, reports Reuters.

ActionAid communications and advocacy coordinator, Riham Jafari, welcomed today’s aid convoy into Gaza, but said it was “barely a drop in the ocean”.

UN secretary general, António Guterres, tells Cairo peace summit that the time has come for “action to end this Godawful nightmare” and called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

West quietly pushing for Israel to hold off ground invasion - report

While we wait for the IDF news conference to begin, here's another update.
The US and several European governments are quietly pushing for Israel to delay its ground invasion, according to The Times of Israel.
The Western governments want Israel to hold off following Hamas's release of two hostages, as they believe an incursion into Gaza could ruin efforts to secure the release of more hostages, a senior diplomatic official told the paper.
Those pressuring Israel reportedly have citizens among those unaccounted for.
They believe a ground invasion is very likely and are not telling Israel not to launch one at all, but rather to hold off for more diplomatic efforts first.

Israel's military is set to hold a news conference at about 10.15am UK time - we'll bring you updates as we get them.

Sky's Africa correspondent who is in Rafah had said this morning re logistics & contents of lorries:
It is unclear whether the trucks will drive all the way into Gaza or offload the supplies onto local trucks on the other side. There are concerns for the safety of volunteers from Israeli airstrikes.

An Israeli airstrike hit the border crossing on Tuesday as calls mounted for aid to enter - the fourth to hit the border crossing since the war started

The trucks are mostly carrying medical supplies which are desperately needed by doctors and aid workers struggling to treat an ever-increasing number of casualties. Surgeons in al Shifa hospital have been operating on patients without anaesthesia.

.....
The United Nations said the 20-truck convoy included life-saving supplies that would be received by the Palestinian Red Crescent. Palestinian group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said the delivery included medicine and limited amounts of food.

IDF press conference has started - should be on your live news channels - I don't have a link to paste r n

IDF statements : 210 hostages being held by Hamas, IDF says

As well as this, 307 IDF soldiers have been killed and their families have been informed.
An Israeli military spokesperson has said the humanitarian situation in Gaza is "under control".

Speaking at a news conference, they continued to urge Gazans to move south and said the aid coming from the border with Egypt would be headed there.

Food, medicine and water supplies have been transferred through Egypt but Israel is not letting in any petrol, they said.

They said Israel will "increase attacks" on Hamas compounds in Gaza as it prepares for the "next stages of war".

So far, 700,000 Gazans have moved south following orders by Israel, they said

WHO says
The WHO says the supplies on the vehicles that are approaching the crossing include:

  • "Trauma medicines and supplies for 1,200 people"
  • "Portable trauma bags for on-the-spot stabilization of up to 235 injured people"
  • "Chronic disease medicines and treatments for 1,500 people and basic essential medicines and health supplies for 300,000 people for three months" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-middle-east-67165505

Cairo Summit update

The Kuwaiti Crown Prince, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, says the current conflict in Gaza is the result of inaction by the international community and calls for the opening of humanitarian corridors.

The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, tells the Cairo peace summit: “We won’t leave, we will remain on our land”. ( see edit below)

UN Gutteres has a long address, an excerpt here:
Our near-term goals must be clear:
Immediate, unrestricted and sustained humanitarian aid for besieged civilians in Gaza.
Immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
And immediate and dedicated efforts to prevent the spread of violence which is increasing the risk of spillover.
To advance all these efforts, I appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire now.

Edited to add a reminder of who is who
'Abbas is president of the Palestinian Authority, which has partial control over the West Bank - it is a rival movement to the Hamas group'

Rafah & casualties issue ( I have no idea why fuel is mentioned )

One truck loaded with coffins among 20 vehicles to enter Gaza - BBC reporter

Our reporter on the ground in Gaza, Rushdi Abu Alouf, has been watching aid trucks enter from Egypt through the Rafah crossing.
He counted 20 trucks entering Gaza so far, he says. That's the number Israel has said it will allow in.
One of the trucks was loaded with coffins. Others were carrying medicines and fuel.
Palestinian officials say 4,137 people have died in Gaza since Hamas infiltrated and attacked Israel two weeks ago - Israel has been bombarding Gaza ever since.
It's worth noting this death toll includes 471 people that the Gaza health ministry says were killed on Tuesday at Al-Ahli Arab hospital. That number is contested - an Israel foreign ministry spokesperson has said it was "several dozen".

Snipped/bolded by me; and my continuous observation only...

There is one small sentence in that article mentioning what happened to Israel, Hamas is labeled "militants", and the rest all focuses on Israel "attacking" Gaza. The media is so focused on the plight on the Palestine, rather than the horrific catalyst to this 'war' -- blaming the victim (Israel) and being scared to call out the terrorist regime (Hamas)

As someone else mentioned up-thread, the hostages seem like an afterthought in MSM. Thankful the Evanston mother/daughter were released, but it seems very strategic. Curious who is running the Hamas propaganda campaign.

another problem with reporting again, imo

Sky doesn't say which attack this was but has a series of photos of scenes of awful devastation
and Sky states
'Civilians - including children - cry and shout as a home is hit in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City.
Other residents gather around a large crater left behind by a strike.
An IDF spokesperson earlier said Israel's military is set to step up attacks on what it said were Hamas targets. '

( The photos are at the top of their live feed, screengrab below)

I'm sorry but any photographer submitting their photos to Sky ( or any other news org) can also supply the metadata which includes time & location co-ordinates of every photo.
How hard is it for any news org to actually state the location of the photo?
IMO this is needlessly sloppy but I will refrain from swearing!!Screenshot 2023-10-21 at 11.35.28.png

More aid in the future?

Julian Borger in Guardian states:
Talking to UN officials, the limitations on the humanitarian deliveries we are seeing today are even more stark. As far as they know, there is no relief convoy planned for tomorrow. The next convoy they are aware of is a UN consignment on Monday.

Although the deal was supposed to have been hammered out by Joe Biden on Wednesday, there are a lot of details that are unclear. The UN is still in talks over what verification procedures, to ensure there are no weapons or other contraband in the shipments, will be acceptable to the Israelis.

Also the UN is still trying to get fuel included in the humanitarian relief deliveries, as it is essential for running hospital generators and Gaza’s water desalination and pumping systems.

IDF says 4 hospitals in northern Gaza refusing to evacuate, Hamas using some as cover

An Israeli security official says several hospitals in the northern part of the Gaza Strip have not yet vacated despite a call from the IDF to move south.

“In the north of the Gaza Strip, there are 20 hospitals, as of now six have already been vacated, 10 have not yet, and four are refusing,” the official says.
