DNA Solves
DNA Solves
DNA Solves
This is just my opinion....but I'd think it would be quicker to match two samples then to match one against a whole system. I would think that in the cases where they have DNA they would know within a 2 week, maybe a month at most window. In cases where there is no DNA it might take more investigative work/ more time to find evidence to tie JLM to the case.

For me though, the more time that goes by, if we hear nothing, it will increase my belief that they are trying to keep everything close to the vest to help strengthen LE's case(s) against JLM. And to me it would indicate that they did indeed find some startling, perhaps explosive evidence against JLM.

Could it be that LE would really really like to have his cases tried in Cville, and not asked to be moved based on too much bias. And if they where to release what they have learned it would virtually confirm in everyone's mind his absolute guilt...given his lawyer grounds to ask for change of venue....I dunno just some thoughts.

I just can't imagine, (and I know its still too early), that if his lawyer knew that there was no forensic link btw certain other cases, how he wouldn't want to announce that info ASAP...as I would think it could only help his client...and maybe I'm wrong but I don't think LE would have any authority to ban him from such an announcement.

I do wonder, what the requirements are for LE to share those results with his lawyer? Are they required to? Or only if/when they press charges?

Additionally can anyone think of a good reason why if LE had established there were no links btw certain cases they would not want to announce it to the public? I'd think if they could show that there was no DNA match even LE would want to announce that...as I'm sure letting a serial rapist/murderer get away with so much for so long doesn't make them look good.

They do not have DNA in most of these cases. They might not have anything to show he did or did not do it. If there is no forensic evidence from the killer, then what? The only thing left is proof that he was somewhere else that day.

I am skeptical that LE is even investigating a link for most of the cases posted here...A lot of them haven't even been brought up in the media. I doubt they are launching some huge investigation w/o some sort of established link.

Hey guys,

Something has been bothering me and I've been meaning to post about it but keep forgetting. I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, sorry if it has; hopefully I'm posting this in the appropriate thread.

Why did JM choose Texas? I mean, the proximity to the border is an obvious possible reason, but I'm not so sure that was his plan, to go to Mexico.

What I'm getting at, is had he spent time in Texas before, particularly the Galveston area? And if so, when, and could there be other possible victims in this area?

Someone posted in another thread, long ago (can't remember which one now) that Galveston was the site for a huge AA spring break fraternity party for many years - 1990s thru 2000s - and the speculation was that he either attended one year or knew about it through the grapevine.

Kappa Alpha Psi, I believe? On my phone and can't link - but it made sense to me at the time. JMO etc

You're right -- Great memory! It was Snoods, Post #394

Snoods:
I have my own theory about how JM knew about and chose an obscure place like Bolivar Peninsula on Galveston Island to lay low. I'd be willing to bet he'd heard of Galveston Island because of the annual Beach Party Weekend. Maybe even been there himself partaking in the festivities.

Starting back in the '90's a black fraternity called Kappa Alpha Psi started hosting an annual Beach Party Weekend in Galveston every year. It grew every year until approximately 250,000 black college students (and non students) from all over the United States would converge upon Galveston for this event. It was a HUGE deal. But in later years it started to get out of control.

Back when JLM was in college the Beach Party Weekend in Galveston would have been in it's hayday. It was advertised heavily and well known to young black college students throughout the United States.

Upon gaining entrance to Haley’s apartment, police found the entire bed was missing, a section of carpet had been cut out and removed, Haley’s computer missing and a substance thought to be blood found on the wall. Several pairs of rubber gloves and cleaning supplies were also found in the bathroom.

Or he could have been taking a very "discreet" route to California.

Does anyone know if when they ran the DNA for the Morgan case and made the connection to Fairfax if they used a state or national search? Also I'm wondering if perhaps when they ran that search if they found other matches to the DNA in the Morgan case....but of course they still wouldn't know who's DNA it was. I sort of wonder if the ONLY reason we even heard about the Fairfax case in the first place, is not because it was the only case linked by DNA, BUT because it was the ONLY case that produced a sketch.....and it was that sketch that was needed to help aide in the MH search. And of course LE would have to explain how they obtained that sketch. I can't remember if I read, or it was here-say, but I recall something about how the sketch was released before LE really wanted it to be released, and how they hadn't even had time to show it to certain potential witness before it came out to the public. Does anyone else remember that? Has LE ever specifically said Fairfax was the ONLY MH connection, or that there were NO other ones? I'm sure they wouldn't really want to announce what the Morgan's had been saying all along...that they had a serial killer on their hands.

(ETA: not to mention potentially how many rapes he was guilty of that either went unreported, or who's rape kits are still sitting on a shelf, years away, if ever, from being entered in CODIS)

I also wonder about the DNA question when it comes to other cases...for example in AM...in order to make the DNA link to the Morgan Harrington case, the unidentified DNA would have to have been run through the same system...with RT already with a noose around his neck...would they have really bothered? Would they have wasted the expense. I guess what I am questioning is that how many cases of possible JLM victims, where they had DNA, was that DNA actually run through an expensive, back logged, 8 month long wait system? Morgan was different, they had few leads, DNA, and very very very (thank god!) pushy parents who remained vocal, within the media view, and promised to be a thorn in LE's side should they not try EVERYTHING!

Imo, the Fairfax rape victim suspect and MH's murderer's dna was linked by the FBI CODIS database since the FBI was involved in the MH investigation, ThinkHard.. JMO

Is this Morgan's killer? Fairfax case connection offers hope, fresh fear

After all, eyewitness accounts, particularly when an attack occurs in the dark, are notoriously inaccurate. In response to the accusations of racial profiling, Charlottesville Police undertook the unusual step of having the perpetrator's DNA analyzed for ancestry and making those results public: indeed, the then-still unknown attacker's DNA was 85 percent of sub-Saharan African descent–- a virtual guarantee that he appeared black.
With only one eyewitness, the rape victim, in the 2005 Fairfax assault, are police worried that the public may now exclude viable suspects if they're told the perpetrator must be African American?

"It's a possibility," concedes State Police spokesperson Corrinne Geller, who says police would have actually preferred to withhold the information and the composite sketch from the public even longer than they did in order to collect more information and finish pursuing investigative leads with the Fairfax police department.
news-morganbillboardMassive community efforts including searches and a billboard have been mustered in the effort to crack the case.

Geller says the timing of the release was prompted by a crime blog, which announced that investigators had discovered a link between the Harrington case and another recent Fairfax case–- the wrong one. When news outlets began contacting her for confirmation, Geller says, police feared widespread misinformation would damage the investigation by prompting a flurry of false leads.
"It pressured us to get this information out there," says Geller, admitting that the decision was so rushed that police hadn't even shown the composite to David Bass, the man who found Harrington's remains and who might have recalled seeing someone fitting the description on his 742-acre farm.
A reporter shared the image with Bass, who says the man is not familiar to him.
If police are piqued by the expedited release of information, bereaved parents Dan and Gil Harrington say they're grateful that the connection they've known about for "some time" has finally been made available to members of the public, who might be able to help.
"It's why I've been pushing them to release it," says mother Gil Harrington, via telephone on July 1, the day police announced the connection. "It's better to be able to make a statement to be alert and be cautious of someone who looks like this," she says. "It's much more likely to keep people in the community safe."
Indeed, Harrington has long asserted that her daughter was the victim of a violent predator who would very likely strike again. On June 17, the eight-month anniversary of Morgan's disappearance, Gil and Dan Harrington were increasingly vocal in their criticism of State Police and UVA officials, whom they said had not done enough to remind the public that a vicious predator was on the loose, quite likely right here in Charlottesville.

I've been working on a list of area victims and found another list with names of victims I have not see before now. I'm throwing it out for your consideration - AND - because some of them occurred during the year of JLM's life that we do not have any known attacks - 2004.

I'm wondering if JLM spent most of 2004 touring around the surrounding states, looking for another college with a football team that would take him.

He has large and influential family with connections in many cities/states.

Good List SolVol...Many of the above are outside the state of VA, it would be interesting to see an expanded area. Feel free to expand the list I made a few weeks ago. :) We are all in this for the same reason... to help. Proud to be a part of the sleuthing. :)

The focus seems to be on missing women. Are there any in Virginia who've been found in the last twelve years, besides HG and MH, who might be possible victims?

We don't know what his M.O. would have been, all the time, either. I suspect that if he had killed the Fairfax victim, he would have left the her lying more or less where he did, maybe dragging her deeper into any nearby shrubbery. On the other hand, if he had done much more of that sort of thing, there'd be more DNA evidence around. But, have there been any bodies, identified, or unidentified, found in the woodlands?

JMO, but I think he 'learned' with each rape. He learned after the 2 assaults in college he couldn't leave his victims alive. I think he learned with the Fairfax case he had to control his impulses long enough to remove his victims to an area where he wouldn't be seen before assaulting and killing them.

FindHG found this one: https://identifyus.org/en/cases/6470 - Found in Fairfax in 9/01: "The skeletal remains were found in the wooded area behind an apartment complex. The remains were spread around a slope and water drainage area." If you go to Skeletal Findings under Physical/Medical, you'll see injuries.

I don't know how FindHG found her or how to search for others.

Thank you! Fairfax? Hmmm. Wish we knew what connection he had with Fairfax. And, would he have 'progressed' to killing his victims that soon? Shotgun--not what I'd expect.

I'm sorry--I'm not meaning to snipe at your helpfulness. I'm just thinking aloud, so to speak.

Didn't take it as sniping. Just putting this up here.

I did one search, for women found in Virginia with years 1999-2014 estimated date of death, and got the following (and now I'm so sad and disgusted, I need to stop):

https://identifyus.org/en/cases/12683 - Workers at the City Farm were cutting the grass in the property when a white sheet was seen on the ground. A worker picked the sheet up and discovered a decomped body. - 25-45 YO WF, one or both hands not recovered. Probable year of death 2014. Found 6/4/14, Newport News, VA 2014 - File last modified 10/22/14

https://identifyus.org/en/cases/960 - DECEDENT WAS FOUND BY CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN AN OVERGROWN MARSH. THE REMAINS ARE COMPLETELY SKELETONIZED. 40-60 YO AAF, one or both hands not recovered. Found 9/10/04 Norfolk City, VA - Probable year of death 2001-2004. File last modified 10/14/14.

https://identifyus.org/en/cases/788 - Found in wooded area. 25-35 YO AAF. Found 1/21/02 Petersburg City, VA - Probable year of death 2000-2002.

https://identifyus.org/en/cases/789 - Decedent was found in an advanced state of decomposition partially wrapped in a garbage bag in a landfill. The hand and feet were bound with duct tape. It is possible decedent was dumped in a landfill by an out-of-state garbage truck from Maryland. 30-50 YO AAF. Found 5/2/00 Waverly, VA. Probable year of death ? 2000.

There are probably more if you change search parameters.

Hey, thank you for all the info you're bringing in. This was on shutterbug22's timeline from the outset, who pulled it all together. It was an amazing thing to have done, I think. Just going through the list and the details, in addition to the ones bessie then added, it puts you in place that's hard to be. Whether it was this perp or others, the list is long. It's tough stuff to take in and to think of what the families feel. The more people do look at it, I think, the more connections will be made. These SK manage to slip through in the empty spaces between people. Closing those gaps, the information that may seep out of that process may perhaps be the key to catching them, it seems.

There are 20 records for Maryland with those parameters - Female, estimated death 1999-2014.

OK, I didn't stop looking, but now I really am done for now.

https://identifyus.org/en/cases/12844 - The decedent was found in a formerly wooded area that was being cleared for new construction. The location is not far from an assisted living facility and shopping center. Date found 4/27/14. One or both hands not recovered. 15-30 YO AAF. Estimated date of death 2012-2014. Found in Largo, MD.

I really am curious if MH's and HG's hands were recovered.

With all due respect, there is absolutely no basis to support that statement (bolded).

But what if...JM is responsible for every case posted on this thread? There have surely been 49+ possible cases brought up...
JM's serial killer count will read...2 confirmed, 1 survived, hundreds suspected
