JLM: What Do We Know About Him?

I am using my cell and dont know how to link and stuff. I was in LJ Matthew Facebook page and going through his friend list for no good reason, anyway he had a group called "Step Up" in Charlottesville in his list. I clicked it and its a rape awareness site and its l about respecting Women and campus rapes etc. And he had this site in his friends list

At many colleges, the person who pays the tuition is the one who receives official information - such as grades, etc. I wonder if the same would apply to on campus crimes, etc? (I have no idea who paid for JM while at CNU - I apologize if I missed seeing that posted here). All JMO as always.

There is a very sad case right now about parents whose son ODed on heroin. THe parents say they had NO idea their son was an addict and user. He apparently got caught using and dealing at college, UMass, and made a deal to be a narc. By making the deal he avoided jail and expulsion, but the parents never got any notification of any of these issues until he recently ODed and died. Now it's all come out, and they are so very upset.

The upshoot is that once you are 18 your are an adult and can enter into contract yourself. Parental notification is not permitted unless the student signs off on it. Colleges often make it easy for the the parents to get all itemized direct bills, so any university fines would go directly to the parent, but if a parent should call for info on the infraction, the school will often refuse to discuss it. The same with medical bills. You can sign to be financially responsible, but that is a whole separate matter than getting the information of what the bill is for. You need to get a separate release for that. Why a school won't roll the whole thing into a ball of wax that the student signs for notification for ALL things, I don't know, but they do not. So yes, you have to get a release to get the grades, a release for each infraction or for any information, but, man, those schools know how to send the bills out . Some schools do bundle permission forms better than others.

No it was in my name but this was also 10 years ago. I remember being very annoyed about it.

ETA....boy I'd like to have a look at his internet history. I bet there is a lot of incriminating stuff on there.

I think you are right that his family had to have been aware. I am so angry right now and will do my best not to be sent to the naughty chair with my post. I saw this "burying our heads in the sand" crap with my aunt and uncle (hate to call them that) when my cousin murdered an innocent girl. It just makes me sick and I will never understand how a parent can refuse to get help for a child who needs help just because the parents cannot bring themselves to believe their child is anything but perfect. They excuse away every indicator that their child is ill and a threat to society with things like it was because he was bullied and laughed at. I am not saying all of this is what JM's parents did, but I am now always skeptical of parents of deviants.

Yes, there is often a lot of denial in famiilies about their beloved children. Also parents often do get help , to no avail. The one family I know who lost their son, knew he had a problem of binge drinking and doing stupid things while partying. They pulled him from college for two years, sent him to counseling and he went to a commuter school, where he still did some foolishness and died from it. So it goes with infractions.

What happened to JM at Liberty could have been a GOOD turning point for him, It should have been the ultimate slap. You can't go over certain boundaries, you can lose so much when you do.. He lost his football scholarship and got expelled from college. That should have been quite the wake up call for him, and perhaps for some young men, it would have been. They learn to be much, much more careful as they have fully learned that the consequences of such actions can be severe, and their behaviors that way is unacceptable in society. Not so with JM. He just continued the same behavior. So though, yes, that rape/sexual assault as a 20 year old is a flag in his record, and does mean something, it could have meant a change. Clearly from the way JM openly interacts with women, as he did that evening before meeting Hannah, he did not take note.

The same with his long list of DMV and other related infractions. There should have been a waning of them over time as a foolish, reckless young man grew up. Nope. Condition of car, behavior, reckless driving still continued. He was given many, many chances. He had no real criminal record, in that he was NOT convicted of any felonies , and he just continued to push it. Of course this is even before we address the fact that he may truly be an evil murderere. No conscious, a sociopath. That could explain a lot of things. Who else would do that 2005 rape, the brutal treatment of MH? This is true evil.

WTVR is reporting Matthew was investigated for another sexual assault in Newport News, which is why he left Christopher Newport University.

Wow. I know we had theorized that was the case, but to have it confirmed means "LJ" has a lot of explaining to do. In my mind, this clinches it....he's a serial rapist/murderer.

I remember reading something here, a throwaway type comment, that he was friends with searchers on the Harrington case. Does anyone remember discussing that? I am trying to catch up with the Harrington case, but it is slow going!

I agree with you, and that was a poor choice of words on my part. Better to say "any possibility that he was involved with others." I am not going to pursue this further at the moment.

But I think that reading JM as psychopathic serial killer (which is not to say he hasn't killed multiple women) is a mistake. He isn't calculating enough.

If JM has been thinking about how to get away with it for a long time, since 2002, at least; if JM has known how to stay under the radar, albeit not the traffic radar; if JM was compelled by violence, rape, control and killing, then exposing himself to the countless online and broadcast media glamorization of the serial rapist/killer genre; if JM knows not to **** where he eats as it were with people, until the night he runs into Hannah; then, JM doesn't have to be that smart to have gotten away with it, just persistent. He may have learned to stay close to home, not away at college, or unfamiliar milieus where he may have tended to lose his bearings and boundaries. He exists as is sitting in a jail, however you parse his psychosis. IMO, it's past the point of whether he's capable of doing it all alone or not. I just hope that the people who know him open up as much as they can to help find Hannah.
