Being shot by some criminal in the line of duty or on purpose makes no difference to me. They still shot at the officer to kill him! Do you think they were hoping they missed?

Is he any less dead??? SMH.

Incidents can ALL be horribly tragic while not being exactly the same.

I don't think Captain Melton's death is any more or less tragic than the death of the officers in Baton Rouge. But that doesn't mean it's the same scenario for each one. They are really quite different when you look at them. Same heartbreaking outcome though.

Let's get back on topic folks. :)

Please!
This thread is about Captain Robert Dave Melton a Kansas City police officer who was Killed.

IMOO.

We know he was shot and killed.

Why was he shot?

What caused him to be there?

What did the person who shot him do?

Is everyone caught?

What the media go to an assumption about causation until more info is found?

What was going on the 25 minutes between first call in and officer shot called in?

Where was backup?

What are the ages of the perps?

Where was he shot?

What gun was used?

How many shots were fired?

Where was the perp in relationship to the cop?

Was this a stray bullet?

Are there any connections to the past weeks, or is this a crime where a cop got shot?

Are there racial overtones here?

What kind of involvment did the perps have with LE?

Did the cop know the perps?

Was this gang?

Was this drugs?

Was this domestic violence?

Family conflict?

I suppose one could say none of that matters - but the world knows he was shot killed. The media focusing on that only, is somewhat insulting, its like they feel like most people do not already know it is tragic.

Its not like anyone in the news audiance need to be told this is sad.

Personally interested in learning the abovementioned

IMO,Core journalsim: Who/What/When/Where/How = that is the goal of journalsim -35 years ago one would never be able to tell what anyone on air is feeling.

That is the reason why Walter Cronkite shedding a tear the day JFK was killed - has become iconic.

IMO,News belongs in one place. Eidtorials in another. There used to be a very strict line - that noone in the news business ever crossed

News now is like Thankgiving tables!!

Sigh. Too many of these shooting threads lately no matter where you stand on any of these powder keg issues.

You guys are all great, but we've got to stop meeting like this. I'm just too sad. I want to hug a cop. I'm going on Facebook to randomly thank my relatives that are on the job.

Hi Ninj!!

Ty !
This is one of the most detailed articles I have read about the shooting, and apologies if it had been posted. I swear I'm trying to keep up.

About a half-hour after the initial call, Melton saw someone who matched the description of the third suspect about 20 blocks from the original scene and pulled up to them, police spokesman Tom Tomasic said. Before he could get out of his car, he was shot multiple times.

Tomasic told reporters it was too early to determine whether the shooting was linked to other attacks on police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Outside the hospital where Melton died, local Baptist preacher Jimmie Banks -- a friend of the city's mayor -- sat dejected on a bench, head lowered, after attending the news conference announcing the officer's passing. He said it was painful to sit in that room and see the grief-stricken faces.
"The contributions that peace officers make to protect and serve -- they deserve better," said Banks. "When they leave home, the family expects them to return. It's shameful this has happened."

Hug those cops!!! and thank your relatives for me too. My dad was law enforcement his whole life... retired twice and went back. We had shots fired at our house ONCE when I was a kid and a threat of kidnapping me. (he was undercover narc and someone 'found out') It didn't stop him from doing his job, but it did PISS HIM OFF worse than I had EVER seen, but made ME more aware. And we were in a small town 'mayberry'. It happens everywhere (this was the 70s). But i tell you what, ALL the cops in about a 50 mile radius, different stations, county, state etc, ALL worked off duty to find this punk. My dad wasn't even stationed in our town any longer, he was state and federal... but town cops, county, state... they ALL went into protective mode. And they found him. Drug dealer
. Didn't take them long. And you know what, I slept better that night as a 9 year old knowing he was NOT coming back for me.

If i see a cop at a restaurant, drive thru, wherever, I buy their lunch. I'm now 52 years old and i've had my run ins with cops, speeding tickets etc. Even tho i knew them as 'people' I still shook and was nervous and MORE than respectful when pulled over. I HATE driving with a cop behind me. Yet i grew up with them at pool parties and picnics and everyday life. If I am respectful, others can still be. too NO EXCUSES

Ok, how 'bout we find an island.. like say Alcatraz. Dump them there, they can fight it out themselves, grow their own food etc... NO HELP from taxpayers. Heck, i'd DONATE for that to happen. Too many prisoners have it WAY too easy in jail/prison. And serving 1/3 of a sentence..... no wonder they come out and do it again. Question is, WHY are we allowing it to happen? Why do criminals have more rights than victims?

And i do understand that innocents live in these areas.... and those innocent MEN need to step up and protect their families and MAKE the streets safer. If they supported the police and volunteered, helped whatever, TAKE BACK THE NEIGHBORHOOD. It can happen. There is a way out if they want... they just have to work for it. And unfortunately we are a VERY VERY lazy country these days. Its all about the excuses.

edited to add: I've managed rentals in areas like these. I know these people. I've helped some of them. These are places Where i was told by police NOT to go after dark.. etc. And when i went during the day, i was armed, legally. And what totally pizzed me off was those very same people that 'wanted out' and proclaimed to want to better themselves wouldn't have their rent money, but had nails done, extensions, beer, alcohol, nice cars.... but it was a fight every month to get rent out of them. And these were CHEAP places. 450/mo. and they didn't lack for what they WANTED, but didn't feed the kids, went to food kitchen for free meals, yet had a fridge full of beer/wine/etc. EVERY single time. I'd take clothes for the kids... would take sandwiches and snack packs for them, but once I heard the 'woe is me' over and over and over yet saw the same people partying nonstop, you just have to say NO MORE. I hated evicting people with kids... and called CPS more than once. And what i always heard was 'You don't understand cuz you got a good job and money and stuff'. Yes, i did... and at one point i was a single mom working 3 jobs and lost everything twice and had to rebuild from zero. But i got off my azz and did it. No one helped me but ME. If I could do it, at least 75% of those women/men could do it too. Its called hard work and sacrifice.

Absolutely on point.

Thanks :)

Well Bless your dad! I swear Kakidoll your the sister from another mister! So much of what you say resonates with me. It is also generational I think (I'm 53), I was raised to respect LE, priests, teachers, crossing guards and just about anyone older than me. None of the BS today of you have to give respect to earn respect. Just working a job to protect me and mine is all the reason I need to give big whomping bus loads of respect to a cop.[emoji5]

Nice post!
Wondering if in general, relatives of LE are warned to be low-key and vigilant?

My heart goes out to all the families of the slain LEOs and to everyone with a loved one, who puts on that uniform, (practically a bulls eye these days) and worries whether or not they will make it safely home again.

They are saying prayers for their community before statements. Will take some questions at the end.

Not a planned ambush. Known criminal trying to escape arrest.

They have everyone in custody that they believe are involved in this incident.

Chief just broke down in tears and is having trouble continuing. :(

Suspect committed violent crime and then murdered Capt Melton to escape arrest.

Pastor now praying for Captain Melton and his family. Calling for community day of prayer this Sunday.

(it doesn't look like they are naming the murdering scum at the moment)

Questions

They believe they have the TWO suspects, not looking for a 3rd, but he investigation is still unfolding.

NO body cams yet

Was wearing his vest. Capt was out checking on his "folks".

Served in military, Afghan, Iraq, war veteran...His philosophy was to "lead from the front."

Patrol offcrs in 2 man cars, but Captain Melton was alone...

Still waiting for charges to be filed. Telling reporters to call DA for any questions about suspect/charges

18-20 years old..young men. (Someone asked him to describe perps)...What race, I wonder?
