"At risk" doesn't necessarily mean special needs. In my district (same state) the criteria are fairly broad. L would qualify as the child of a single parent.

Wichita Public Schools offers free Pre-Kindergarten programs for children who are four (4) years old on or before August 31st.

The child must meet one qualifying factor:
Eligible for free lunch
Single-parent family
Limited English proficiency
Either parent lacking high school diploma or GED
Teen parent
SRS referral
At-risk for developmental delays based on screening results
Child qualifies for migrant status

The child must be transported to and from school, attend preschool regularly, and the family must complete a meal program form.

I can't find the name of the school Lucas attended, so i'm not sure this is applicable. Someone mentioned it up thread. Pink?

I believe the programs like that are state funded so it would be for all the schools.

Private via WS? Or private via TES? Why the sudden publicity?

Private per Tim at TEQ. Publicity is the operative word. We need to keep Lucas’ name in the media, but I was told the areas that had been searched shouldn’t be named.

I do know there are two different search groups going out this weekend and they are looking for volunteers.

Not all of the elementary schools have a pre-k program. There’s a list on the site which schools have a pre-k program

I am talking about the programs not pre k

As for pre k they might not get a lunch depending on how many hours they are at school...

My daughter-in-law is a reading and math specialist for intermediate unit 1 for children with problems.

She has a masters in both..

I thought the news story was great in bringing Lucas’s story upfront. It needs to be in the news until he is found. I even didn’t mind the connection they made with Lucas and doing something as a community for the homeless. It is unsettling seeing these homemade tents, makeshift “abodes “ that people actually have to live in, and a little scary at times too- I was just wondering about the locations searched/and in progress being out there. I am happy that there is someone always looking for our little guy. I guess maybe the thought is that the benefit outweighs the risk at this point.
Just thinking.
MOO

I’m sorry I’m not sure what you mean by programs

The free/reduced lunch program is for more than just meals. I identifies financially at-risk families and allows for additional services. It also makes a difference in school funding. Qualifying for the program would likely be another factor for acceptance into the at-risk pre-K program.

I think it’s a safe assumption that if you attend a program at USD 259, or other public schools in Wichita, no matter what grade, there will be a protocol that is set forth in regards to attendance etc. It will most likely be the same for all grades attending a publicly funded school. MOO

Oh, definitely. They require the form be filled out for all pre-k students in USD 259, for funding and other purposes.

I was talking about the state programs offered for lunches and other things for at risk children. They are the same at all public schools depending on how many children that attend there qualify for them.
Also there is Federal funding.

You answered with something totally different about Lucas and a free lunch.

This just made me think of something. My oldest daughter had cancer in 2015. When she was suffering from high blood pressure and massive headaches (before we knew what was wrong with her) she couldn't get out of bed because her head hurt so bad so she missed a lot of school. I sent her pediatrician a message through mychart and he wrote a doctors note for her to be excused from school until further notice through mychart. All I had to do was print it. This pediatrician has done this for me with my other children who are in school several times. Because he has been our pediatrician for a long time and he trusts me. I can't afford to take my kids to the doctor for something as simple as fever and diarrhea, unless it got bad of course. Anyways, I'm getting off track here. In Kansas, if your child will be absent for more than 2 days of school they need a doctors note. A sick child can not return to school unless they have been fever and diarrhea free for at least 24 hours. I've been told that because of this and because of the convenience of mychart that more doctors are writing doctors notes through mychart without even seeing the patient. If Emily had a doctor who trusted her or even a few doctors that she seen who trusted her, it would be easy to get a doctor to write a note electronically. I know it doesn't matter much but this could be how she obtained notes without a doctor ever seeing Lucas.
This a good point and it reminds me of something. One of my relatives children was sick recently and their doctor actually didn't want them coming in at all. Since contagious illnesses have been so bad, it was less risk to just send in a prescription for what they thought the symptoms sounded like than it was to have them come into the office.

I have no idea about the details of Lucas's doctors notes, but it's possible he never even saw anyone in person (although now I'm realising that one note mentioned his injuries so that potentially voids my whole story).

Even tho I wasn’t the one who posted the info about free lunch and other identifying factors, the list in Flute’s post is the at-risk criteria used to determine eligibility for pre-k in wichita public schools which is why I imagine she included it because Lucas was in pre-k

My family thinks I need this sticker. BUT, you guys would be proud of me. Yesterday, after starting to going down another river road with the mini van, I turned around. Now, I am going back tomorrow but I am taking the truck so all should be good. :)

I literally LOL'd at that sticker. If we lived closer, I think you and I would be good friends, lolol!!! I'm a country-ish girl, lots of experience peeing in bushes (do NOT use leaves for TP!!) and back road driving, lol.

Does anybody have any new ideas about how we find Lucas? This was posted about five threads back:

3 little boys ( many other too, just our more recent boys) are still missing. This is insane.

I can only get comfort in knowing they are probably all playing together. Big smiles and glorious laughter. Bring home Jr, Joe and Lucas.
