Green ribbons laced the trees surrounding the Fifth Judicial District Courthouse in Carlsbad Sunday afternoon.

The ribbons were for 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez, of Wichita, Kansas, who was reported missing Feb. 17, 2018.

Community members and Lucas' extended family in Carlsbad held a vigil to keep the boy's name in the limelight.

"I think it's awesome that everybody can get together and rally for my grandson," said Cyndi Norman, of Carlsbad. "Any opportunity that we can get him and his face out there for anybody across the nation that could possibly see him and help us get him home is greatly appreciated."

The people at the courthouse were from several groups that have been searching for Lucas and have established Facebook pages to gather information. They were carrying signs that read "Find Lucas" and "Justice for Lucas," and they wore green ribbons to recognize his favorite color. Brooklyn Ledbetter said people want answers and "we're going to be that little boy's voice for Wichita." Melissa Ortiz said the groups want to avoid speculation and they want people to keep searching their farms and properties to find Lucas.

Dad of missing Lucas charged with hitting stepmom's child in days before boy vanished

Twelve days before Lucas disappeared, his father “smacked” Glass’ 6-year-old son from a previous relationship hard enough to leave a hand print on his chest, according to allegations in a court document previously reported by The Eagle.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Lucas’ father, Jonathan Hernandez, with misdemeanor battery for the Feb. 5 incident. Although the charge identifies the alleged victim only by initials, they match those of Glass’ 6-year-old son. And the date of the alleged battery in the charge filed on Wednesday also matches the date in a Wichita police report about a child abuse case involving a 6-year-old boy.

The court document — which led to Glass losing custody of her 1-year-old daughter after her stepson disappeared while in her care — said she had difficulty controlling her anger and was thought to be lashing out at Lucas because of her anger with the boy's father. Because of his job, Hernandez was away from his son for weeks at a time.

New details revealed of police interviews of stepmom after 5-year-old Lucas vanished

A window partly opened into investigators’ questioning of Emily Glass after she reported 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez missing.

The perspective depended on whether it was the prosecutor’s or the defense attorney’s viewpoint in court Friday: During interviews with Wichita police and the FBI, Glass was “not emotional” and willing and able to talk, or she was at times exhausted and scared.

The new details emerged at a Sedgwick County District Court hearing to help settle complicated legal issues leading up to Glass’ trial on a misdemeanor charge of endangering her 1-year-old daughter.

Police and the prosecutor accuse Glass of confessing to smoking marijuana and then driving her daughter to a restaurant the day before she reported Lucas missing. Police have said that she told investigators that she last saw Lucas in his bedroom on the afternoon of Feb. 17, that she took a shower and a nap and that when she awoke a few hours later, he was gone. Police said there was no evidence of a kidnapping and that they don’t think he left on his own.

Glass' trial is expected to begin with jury selection Monday morning.

One additional layer of detail about Lucas that came up at Friday’s hearing: A neighbor came to Glass’ home and saw that she and her daughter were gone — but that 5-year-old Lucas was there. The neighbor had a “Q&A” with Lucas about where Glass was.
