Yeah. I don't know if it's really possible in 2020 to just 'start a new life'. How? It was possible in the past because ID was all on relatively easily forged paper and there weren't computer systems everywhere where you could easily verify if it was genuine. There weren't CCTV cameras everywhere. Nobody had phones in their pocket that contained a camera, video camera, Internet, etc etc and could easily relay messages anywhere in the world. Banking wasn't completely centralised. I just don't see it being a thing anymore, or it would be extremely rare and very difficult to pull off now compared to even just a few years ago. I think you'd need a lot of money, to come from money, and she doesn't.
I think it's more likely like others have said that she accepted a ride from the wrong person. Maybe just living rough somewhere but I personally wouldn't call that "starting a new life".
I feel the same. It's like you need the help of FBI or new documents or else human traffickers or mafia to "start a new life" in this social media and camera surveillance filled time. You need money for plastic surgery. You need new credit, a new ID--it's just really hard to disappear and start over. It seems like more cases of disappeared people involve murder or violence.
