The thing that is nagging at me is this: Why is there no picture of the car turning onto St. Landry in front of the circle K? This is obviously the best camera of the four. Why wouldn't they give us a good shot of the car? Leads me to believe they are holding it for a reason....or the pictures are not in the order we think. The picture of the car on St. Landry came FIRST and then they circled around and got caught on University.

Likewise, why is there no picture of the truck on the St. Landry cam BEFORE the pic in front of circle K as he turns left onto University. This leads me to believe that either A: The camera on St. Landry isn't always recording, or B: He came from the Brashear streets and was never caught on that particular camera.

Assuming that camera is always running, that truck would have had to come form the Brashear area (the 1st truck) and with him turning left on University and being caught at 1:51am, that would put him in the Brashear area at around 1:49 or so. The same time Mickey would've been back there. Again, all assuming that camera is constantly running. If not, there is no way to know if she or the truck passed that camera and she made it further down St. Landry.

But what we DO know, is that for some reason there's no pic of the car turning onto St. Landry in front of the circle K which means either LE is holding it....or they never turned there.

WOW! Way to break it down. I bet you're an awesome P.I.

It's because of the Zodiac killer who DID taunt the cops and the community.

Yea, and he was never caught. We shouldn't underestimate the capacity for evil that people who commit acts such as these share.

I really think LE is withholding some surveillance video.

I agree. For one thing we have seen the pics from the camera across the street from Circle K, but nothing from any cameras mounted at the Circle K. Wouldn't a gas station have a camera or two?

I know, but I think someone accidentally hitting her would be more noticeable than say, someone lurking in the dark shadows and pulling her off the bike towards them. I don't know how likely that is. I am not really familiar with that area of Lafayette and I am sure there are areas that the surveillance cameras don't show.

There are so many dark corners and lush vegetation that I think I quick grab is possible.

that would also explain why the bike was tossed aside. why steal a bike to toss it away a few blocks down the road? unless it was stolen by an unruly kid, or someone stealing it out of spite.

Did I not read that he had gotten the bike back? Does anyone know if that was true?

This is a guess, but alot of those security cameras don't work like true video. They just take stills every 5 seconds or so.

They could've sped through with a green light and never even of been picked up by that camera.

I agree that the St. Landry camera (where the car was caught) is probably crappy and only films every few seconds, thus missing her riding buy and missing the truck heading towards University. But the camera by the circle K looks like a pretty good camera that records constantly. Even if it were only every few seconds, with its wide viewing angle it shoudlve caught that car. So I strongly believe that either LE is holding that photo, or the car never turned there. Meaning it was down St. Landry first and made a block back up onto University

Why am I thinking that the perp may have hit her from behind but not due to an accident but on purpose in order to take Mickey as she'd be stopped and more vulnerable?

Or another scenario is what if he took Mickey and went to drive off but ran over the rear bike tire then thought he better take it so as to not leave evidence.

I hate to think of what may have happened to this woman!

Yes, the camera that looks at Circle K is on the Lafayette Consolidated Government building and, if you look at their other cameras, they don't record continuously, just every few seconds:

Yes, he got the bike back about a week later. It was found laying in some bushes close to where the cemetary is where the car and white truck were spotted.

Just maybe the camera view that you're talking about shows the driver........maybe LE doesnt want that shown yet?

That's what I'm thinking, either that, or they caught the tag number, but if they did that, they would know who this driver is. What's going through my mind is this, wonder if this truck is used for construction projects and it's a rental, then what?

Hello, everybody. I'm a long-time lurker on Websleuths- going back maybe even a decade. I tried to open an account back in the day, but wasn't allowed to open one with Yahoo/Hotmail/Whatever anyone else was using back then. I'm pleased to have finally broken through to the other side.

I'm interested in and follow many criminal cases, so I look forward to speaking with all of you in the future.

The Mickey Shunick case is of particular interest to me, as I happened to visit Lafayette, LA for the first time the day Mickey went missing. I moved to New Orleans late last year, and have been a bit slow in getting to know the surrounding region.

In any case, I arrived in Lafayette in the late afternoon of Saturday, May 19th, around the time Mickey Shunick was declared missing. I knew little about the town, and based my explorations upon suggestions from friends and a nice guy who worked in a bike shop on Johnson Street. My partner and I are in our mid-30s, and asked the bike shop worker where a good place for newcomers to hang out might be. He suggested that we walk around Jefferson Street and the Saints Streets area, and we headed there immediately. In a strange coincidence, we walked most of the streets that I'd later find out Mickey Shunick had passed about 15 hours earlier.

We saw no signs of a search, and I only found out about this case days later, happening upon a sign in New Orleans. I truly wish I'd known about this, because I would have kept an eye out for skid marks, or broken bicycle parts, or something.

All of the posters here are astute, and I'm so glad to read everyone's input. However, I do feel the need to point out that Mickey Shunick didn't seem to be riding her bike or hanging out in a sketchy part of town. If anything, it seemed to me to be the trendiest thing that Lafayette has going. Jefferson Street, where Artmosphere is located, appeared to be the major local hang-out for anyone who wants to walk around. The surrounding streets have a similar draw. I saw many, many people of all ages frequenting restaurants, shops, and bars.

I"m a walker, myself, and passed by the corner where Ms Shunick was last seen, as well as the route that she took to get there from her friend's house. Any suggestions that she was risking her life by setting foot in the area, or must have been purchasing illicit drugs to be there seem very misguided. It was an area typical of the sort of place most people look for when they're going out for a bite of food or a drink. From my non-local's perspective, the area seemed as normal as normal can be.
Glad you came out of lurk mode, StreetcarRider. Welcome to Websleuths (and to NOLA ;) )

:welcome3:

And also, if she DID go down Brashear (which is likely since she's not on the next camera at St. Landry) that would've only taken her about 20 seconds from 1:48am at the circle K. With the car being down university at 1:49 am and not even having reached St. Landry yet, it never would've even crossed her path or seen her by the time it reached this point....unless of course it went down Brashear too. But that's doubtful because of the traffic barriers. Any VEHICLE wanting to cut across to Johnston wouldn't take Brashear
I seriously think soemthing could have happened at the Catholic Hospital on Brashear. There is a delivery area there on the right that is filled with dark alleys and I have been there in daylight and seen unsavory characters. Someone could have been lurking. In fact I would bet money on it now. gives me the creeps. Nice docs and Catholic services above the delivery area. awful to think about.

Does Brashear go all the way down to Johnston street or would she have to get on yet another street to get to Johnston. Why do people not think she would have gone down st Mary instead of Brashear? cameras?

Have I got this right? This pic was taken shortly after Mickey left BW's house?

yes! this was near the start of her trip. (im very familiar with the area because ive lived in the st streets in different homes for the last 6 years. also my good friend own a house right next to that intersection.)

Another thing that has me puzzled, is this what looks like a motorcycle in the picture that is circled. He's obviously in the right turning lane. Wonder if now he realizes what he missed.

Brashear is a straight shot to Johnston st. if she passed through the traffic barrier posts. A vehicle on the other hand would have to go around.

Why are we not allowed to have cell phones? We didn't have this rule til TES came along and reorganized everything. I guess they are concerned a volunteer would try and leak info/pics.

Or were you asking why I'm hesitant to go out searching without my phone? B/c I'm a mother to small children one of whom has medical issues and I'm not willing to be in a situation where I could not be contacted for several hours at a time, in case he needs to be rushed to the ER.
Your first paragraph is accurate.

Did you tell TES and/or your TL why you needed your phone? If so, what did they say?

I would have allowed any team member to carry it for emergency purposes. But if I saw anyone on their phone I would have halted the group, assuming an important call.

This is not a game. Someone has done something very bad to this girl, IMO.

TES and LPD are tight. They want people who are dedicated to finding Mickey and and any evidence. Those who can concentrate and not be distracted. Those who are healthy enough, know how to dress to search in places that bodies are known to be hidden. They don't want people that have attitudes .. that are on a power trip.

Unfortunately, they don't know how to find these good people without running the search the way they are .. without the rules they have.

I bet you would be a very good searcher. I'm sorry about your child with medical issues. That has to be very tough on you. I thank you, though, for trying. There are so many people who could help, but don't even try.
