Minimum 25 doesn't mean life. They could be out around 50-55

I thought they got life with no chance of parole?

The thing is we think this is a sure thing conviction because we know what they're capable of from the TB trial. But put yourself in the jury's shoes and imagine you know NOTHING about DM and MS. You wouldn't be so quick to label them guilty of M1 just yet.

I guess, but the rap song, having her iPad and the photos... it would be hard to not think they were guilty. Plus the accused defending himself is a good sign too.

In the gruesome video MS made I only saw it briefly but I remember he had a big butcher type knife and I think was hacking up a woman. He was smiling if I remember. They took it off the internet. I don't think they hacked up Laura because if that picture of the tarp is her , her body was not in pieces. I think the phone evidence today was very damning. They proved that it was accurate when they traced Laura s calls with other witnesses. That is very damning evidence. I believe if they have more police evidence that is strong it is M1.

Do any of you ever think you could be on a jury, or have you been? I have never served on a jury or asked. I don't think I could do it in a big trial like this one. I feel very sorry for the jury in Tim Bosma s trial, they had a lot of stuff to go over. A few of them even suffered PtSD after the trial was over, due to the stress of the trial.

To be honest so far no real evidence.

The rap? Means nothing. Just some punk trying to be cool.
The cell pings? And? They hung out and she left.
Mark's ipad? Sold it to him for 100 bucks.
No more cell activity? Got a new one

Let's see some real evidence. Not sure if all this circumstantial evidence will cut it.

One by one it may mean little, but together...

No more cell activity...sure she could have gotten a new one but would she also stop talking with everyone she knows, give up her dog and disappear? Particularly when she is open to telling everyone about her mental illnesses and escort work.

Marks ipad... Sure he could have bought it, but he magically gets the same day a girl disappears from the earth.

Cell pings... Last people known to be around a girl who disappears from the world.

And during this time you just happen to be trying to get your hands on an incinerator. And we've got texts and pictures of it bring operating around this time.

Agreed. I think he did himself a grave disservice by alleviating that little tidbit of a doubt. Some would say there *was* no doubt in the first place, but that just iced the cake, so to speak.

Good point. Never thought about it from that angle. With this case seemingly being so hinged on circumstantial evidence that does make me wonder - if neither confess to being a party to this crime, is it enough?

Thank you to all for the tweets today. With no ABro (sadly) I feel we lost a bit of insight into how the day unfolded. Hoping the Crown comes through with some rock solid evidence to tie them all together. It’s been painful to hear of her mental and emotional state, knowing her fate..

Same. Too much evidence way too much but if there was a 0.000001% chance it was gone as soon as MS officially admitted they did kill him

I don't know of he'll go on the stand again but from MS lawyers questions, I think he's going with a similar defense that DM did it. He's tossed out the odd someone else could have done it but I think it's going to end the same way with MS trying to dump it on DM since MS has zero motive for the crime.

Suspect we know most of what is going to come out besides contents of some text messages and perhaps some gun items that may have been mentioned in the open but we don't have a copy of it

I think they've proven she's dead (she isn't the type who's just going to cut everyone off and start a new life) and they've shown these two were with her when she last was alive (via her phone that she used constantly). Then you have the Eliminator stuff happening at the same time. Don't expect any big ah-ha moments.

Why wouldn't they just incinerate the phone? Unless they didn't want it traced to the farm, but it was already traced to DM's house.

I see it the same way. But a jury with no background info... is it enough for guilty verdicts? It WAS enough for direct indictment...

My only hunch is because they are idiots. MS had quite the phone collection as I recall from testimony at the TB trial.

They should have taken her phone to an airport or train station and call some of her contacts from there ( so the pings would register from there)

<modsnip>

IIRC this is a true crime sleuthing "solving" form. Not how to commit the perfect crime forum NIM. :gasp: :hearno:

I'm so grateful these two psychos were bumbling idiots and left lots of evidence in their wake. MOO.

I was called for jury duty for the Badgerow trial last yr. Had about 300 people they were choosing from. Glad I didn't make it. If you get called to report for jury duty you can do little to get out of it.

Yes to this, swedie.

I thought they got life with no chance of parole?

A "life" sentence for first degree murder in Canada is minimum 25 years. They could get parole after 25 years for good behaviour if they aren't likely to re-offend, but I doubt someone like DM would ever be eligible for parole (if he ends up being convicted of 3 murders, and is thus a serial killer).

MS’ defense.. my theory - he forgot his phone in DM’s truck. He was home sleeping the whole time. Except for gratuitous photo ops of course.

WOW... This feels almost like the cocky move of DM putting TB's truck keys on his own key ring. The day after LB is allegedly murdered by these two guys and they are renaming her iPad as Mark's already?? So bizarre.

I'm sure Dungey will say LB sold it to MS so she could buy more drugs or something

With respect to theories of how LB was killed - there was a text exchange that came up in the TB trial which haunted me -

"Reminds me, Shane's starting modification on the white van for search-and-capture missions," Millard texted Smich.

"I love search and destroy," Smich wrote back. "Lol."

These two were more psycho than has been exposed , MOO.

Is there a lawyer or knowledgeable person in our group that could tell me?
Can this trial accept sworn evidence from the TB trial?
Can they call a witness from that trial?
If he gives conflicting testimony can they bring up the other trial?

How can they pretend it never happened?
I would have a hard time sitting on a jury, deciding someone's fate, and pretending.

As far as the jury is concerned, there is no TB. The death of LB happened before TB, so therefore the current trial "happened" before TB. IMO anything that happened with him is, sadly, irrelevant to LB.
