MA - Alleged Serial Rapist, Attorney Matthew Nilo, 35, Arrested Due To Genetic Genealogy, 2023 June 1

He's not due in court for the additional charges until July 13.

I wish they would arrest him again in the meantime for the additional charges. (Can they do that?)
Sure. But the cases will likely be consolidated.
It’s egregious it took 15 years for the system to process DNA from rape victims. Love how family genealogy is solving crimes decades later.

He was really young back then. Wonder if there’s more victims who will come forward.

Feel bad for his fiancée, but hopefully she can one day realize she dodged a bullet. Can’t imagine a man like that can change.

I can’t say it was egregious. If they didn’t have anything in the system to match it to until one of his relatives submitted samples to a database and opted in, there was nothing they could have done earlier.
Any verified attorneys here to give an opinion on the DNA evidence collection?
It appears to be valid:

“For example, when police are interested in determining whether a suspect may be connected with an unsolved crime for which they collected a DNA sample from the crime scene, they will covertly obtain the suspect’s DNA from a fast-food wrapper or hair sample taken from a barber-shop floor. To date, judges have concluded that persons have discarded the DNA-laden cells obtained by police in these circumstances, and thus under Fourth Amendment law, retained no privacy interest in the item seized by police.”

(This is specifically as to MA law).

Can you contact local police and have them look into him?
Oh you better believe I called the detective, Joel Peterson, who is working on her case (I am relentless about getting this case solved). He told me that they were appropriately notified of “Mr.Nilo” prior to it coming out in the media. Madison police department is now working with Boston police currently. It’s the first time that there has been a significant possible suspect. Her body was found 16 years ago today.

News breaking from a local Boston station: Nilo was questioned about the sexual assaults back in 2008 after LE spotted him in the neighborhood of the attacks in the early morning hours:

"A police report from the incident on July 12, 2008 states that just after 4 a.m., an officer pulled Nilo over while driving on Commercial Street and said he “could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle,” and saw what he believed to be marijuana on the passenger’s seat of the car. Officers took Nilo into custody, and booked at the district on charges of possession of a Class D substance.

5 Investigates’ sources say that Nilo was actually first spotted by Boston detectives who were in the neighborhood looking for the attacker, and that those detectives chased Nilo on foot until he got into his car, and that's when he was pulled over.

5 Investigates was told that when Nilo was booked, he was questioned about the North End sexual assaults, but only charged for marijuana possession."

On June 23rd 2007, this shows you how close Matthew Nilo’s apartment (716 w dayton) was to Kelly Nolan’s apartment (434 w mifflin)downtown Madison, WI.

I did post this under her thread a while back but just wanted it to show people who are following Matthew Nilo’s case (tomorrow’s a big day!) to attention here:IMG_9108.jpeg

Can you link to her thread please? I'd like to read up on her case.

This is thread number 2 but Page 1 will link you to the first thread which is filled with comments only in 2007. Thread number 2 is a bit sad but awesome as it shows you very little progress/attention during the last 15 years of having no answers or leads of her murder.

Nilo is an attorney who is from the Boston area, but after 2008 he also lived in Wisconsin, California and New York, Bonavolonta said.

***
Cowbell, a company that advertises cyber insurance, employed Nilo but has since suspended him, a spokesperson said.

The company, which hired Nilo in January after he passed a background check, has suspended him pending further investigation, spokesman Justin Finnegan said in an email. The company did not say what role he held.
His DNA will now be in the national data base. I'd bet dollars to donuts more rape victims will be identified.

Just wanted to make a correction to your link quick lol - Matthew Nilo attended UW-Madison 2006-2010 so he lived in Madison well before 2008 for a while. He has underage drinking records from 2007 listed under the Wisconsin CCAP (circuit court)records as well as his address and updated address during those years.

New charges yesterday for Matthew Nilo.

Edited: Some interesting information about him being questioned in 2008, pulled over on drug charges.

Gives me chills… MOO

Prosecutors today in court described the ordeal of one victim, who they believe was attacked by Nilo twice, 11 days apart:

"One woman was attacked twice in the North End, prosecutors said — first groped by a man who tackled her out of her shoes on Jan. 3, 2008, before jogging off, then penetrated by a man she was convinced was the same one. In that incident, police said the woman, in her 20s, was walking to work when she was tackled.

"I have a gun, don't resist or I'm going to kill you," her attacker told her, with a gloved hand over her mouth and nose and another hand assaulting her. She fought back and he fled when a car drove by, prosecutors said, allowing her to flag down a tow truck driver, who called police.

While no DNA profile was found from a sexual assault kit taken at a hospital after the attack, prosecutors said, her pants were sent to a private lab this year, which found DNA from three people, including one male — and it pointed to Nilo.

The prosecutor said it was "43.3 billion times more likely that the mixture included the defendant than another contributed."

From your link ... I'm curious how this will play out. More and more cases are being solved using round-about DNA collection and analysis, but is it legal ...

"Boston police said new advances in DNA technology and genealogy were key to solving her case and those of the other survivors. Attorney Joseph Cataldo is defending Nilo and challenges the method authorities used to get his client's DNA sample.

"The courts will eventually rule on this issue of stealing somebody's DNA, analyzing it without a warrant, and I think in this case they will rule that it was unconstitutionally seized," Cataldo said."

He has been ordered to pay $50k in additional bail today on the new charges ––

Serial rape suspect Matthew Nilo ordered to pay $50,000 additional bail - ABC News

<snipped & BBM>
Manhattan attorney Matthew Nilo -- who is accused of a string of sexual assaults against women in Boston 15 years ago -- was ordered to pay $50,000 in additional bail Thursday, on top of the $500,000 in cash bail he already posted from a previous arraignment.

[...]

He was formally arraigned Thursday after being indicted by a grand jury on June 27 for multiple charges, including rape, after allegedly attacking four women in 2007 and 2008. The charges included one count of rape, one count of aggravated rape, three counts of assault with intent to rape, and two counts of indecent assault and battery.

[...]

His next court date is set for Sept. 14 and his trial is scheduled to begin on June 25, 2024.

I decided to dig through the newspaper archives and see if there were any other rapes or sexual assaults committed in Madison during the time he was a student there (his LinkedIn profile has been deleted, but he was listed as having attend UW-Madison from 2006-2010) that match his MO. I found 5 cases that match MN's MO (victim profile, time, and proximity to his apartment) that, to my knowledge, have not been solved:

- September 4, 2006: Shortly before 3 a.m., a 23-year old woman was attacked by two men in the 500 block of University Avenue in Madison [NOTE: this is a 2-minute walk from the address MN was living at in 2007]. She said that the two men raped her between two dumpsters. While the rape was taking place, two additional men tried to join in the attack. One of the two attackers was described as white, in his early 20s, 5-foot-8 with an average build. He was wearing square glasses and had a tattoo on his right arm. [NOTE: This attack happened 2 days before classes started at UW-Madison in 2006]

- November 30, 2007: A UW-Madison student was sexually assaulted in Ogg Hall [NOTE: this is a 3-minute walk from the address MN was living at in 2007] after she encountered a man in a stairwell and followed him to a dorm room. She ultimately declined to press charges because she couldn't remember what exactly happened.

- October 12, 2008: A 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the 400 block of North Henry Street [NOTE: this is a 10-minute walk from MN's address in 2007] at around 2:10 a.m. The man, described a 5-foot-6 with a medium build, approached her in a dark alley.

- August 30, 2009: A woman in her 20s was found disoriented and partially clothed on the West Beltline near Gammon Road in the early morning hours. She had been assaulted. The woman had been in the Downtown area earlier that night.

- May 1, 2010: A 19-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted in the basement of a home on Mifflin Street. At the time, police said a person of interest was being interviewed but I could find no records of an arrest being made in the case.

I also decided to look up sexual assault cases in San Francisco during the time NM was a student at the University of San Francisco School of Law. I don't know exactly where he was living in SF at that time, but there are a few cases that sound very similar to the attacks in Boston, but one in particular caught my eye:

July 30, 2013: A woman was approached by an unknown man in a vehicle while she was walking near California Street and 30th Avenue [NOTE: this location is roughly a 10-minute drive from USF Law School]. The man struck up a conversation with her and asked for directions to the Legion of Honor and asked her to get in the car with him so she could show him the way. He then drove her to the dead end of El Camino Del Mar and sexually assaulted her after locking the car doors. The woman described the suspect as white, 25 to 28 years old, about 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds with a wide nose. The sketch of the suspect based on the woman's description of her attacker looks similar to older photos of MN (side-by-side comparison below).
