Most gambling these days is done online, not at the casino. I've done it. I have no doubt this is how he racked up his debt.

For all of those who wonder how his fiance didn't notice his late hours when he was allegedly gambling, it would have been very easy for him to lie to her and tell her that he was at the hospital for his current rotation. She wouldn't have had any way of knowing any differently unless she went to the hospital and asked for him - which she obviously never had a reason to do and which doesn't surprise me.

BOSTON (AP) — Investigators are looking into gambling as the possible motivation for a Boston medical student accused of targeting women who advertised erotic services on Craigslist, luring them into hotels to rob them and killing one woman who fought back.
Philip Markoff is accused in the death of Julissa Brisman, a masseuse who was found dead April 14 in a Boston hotel after being bashed in the head and shot three times. He's also suspected of robbing and tying up another, and police have said there could be more victims.
A Connecticut casino has confirmed it is cooperating with authorities investigating Markoff's gambling habits.
Markoff was arrested on Monday on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts as he and his fiancee drove to Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Wow, I knew he shot Julissa Brissman, but I didn't know she also suffered a blow to the head. He must have been really angry.

Here is a local newspaper link. I have lived in RI my entire life so if anyone has questions about the area I would be happy to try to answer.

"ABC News, citing an anonymous source who has knowledge of the investigation, reported on Tuesday that Markoff gambled all night at the Foxwoods Casino two days after Brisman's death, leaving with $5,300 in winnings.

He also gambled at the casino two days after the attack on another woman at the Westin Hotel in Boston, said the source, who spoke to ABC News on the condition of anonymity.

A police source close to the investigation told ABC News this week that police believe Markoff's motive in the alleged crimes was to pay off gambling debts."

OK so he lived with his fiance? How did she not notice restraints, a gun etc. The article also said he had items from the victims. The fiance is saying someone set him up?? Come on. He's on the video at the hotels! They traced his email account. I've heard of denial but she really needs to wake up.

On one of the major news networks they said the gun was found in a hollowed out book! Not sure where he kept the panties. I have a feeling he's going to be connected to other murders...very creepy! His fiance had to at least notice the mood swings his lab partner mentioned. Although there's BTK...his wife was clueless. Just when you think you know someone.....

Wow, i just caught that about the panties! If I were LE,I'd be checking into any unsolved crimes in any area where he lived or near casinos.
Speaking of casinos, pretty much the next town over from Sherill,NY,where he is from, is Turning Stone casino. I'd be very curious how much time he spent there.

He may want to consider changing his not guilty plea now that this new evidence has been released. That'll be a hard one to defend..

power-dominance thing, he's from a wealthy family, they probably ran his life, he has a fiancee from a well to do background, she's planning their wedding & (what was to be) their future, so he went after these women who he could get away with dominating them, he may have some casino debts but there's more to it than that (in my OP).

I honestly thought his only motive was robbery. He saw these women as vunerable, less likely to report a crime, etc. After reading that he kept there panties it's obvious it was much more than the money.

His fiance' should be thanking her lucky stars that she didn't marry him. I'm sorry for his victims but they just may have saved her life.

Where this kid grew up is only 10 minutes from me. Our local news said his mom works at a gift shop at turning stone casino. I've seen it ruin lots of lives since they built it around here................

I totally agree. It's all about the power struggle.

I agree. The possibility of souveniers in this case changes practically everything I was previously considering as possible motives. I find it highly unlikely that he just happened to pick up a pair of panties on his way out of a crime scene and if he did just "pick them up," it was only a very short matter of time before his crimes became sexual after this. The most plausible theory to me is that he started his "crime spree" just as has been reported - totally focused on stealing money from his victims for whatever reason he had justified in his head, but at some point during these crimes he realized he was liking the control/dominance he was exerting over his victims and it quickly escalated from there.

It seems that this guy was most likely a ticking time bomb filled with rage and contempt toward people in general, not just women. I'm sure he would have loved to beat a man as much as a woman, but it is obviously MUCH easier for him to target women and the sexual part was probably just the icing on the cake for a sicko like this. All of the quotes I've seen from people who knew him and thought something was a little off, have been both men and women and they all are basically saying the same thing - This guy was a total pr*** who thought he was better than pretty much everyone else on earth.

Well, this guy is really a sick individual.

Does his trial photo remind anyone else of Jeffry Dahlmer.

I agree with those of you that have said that he couldn't have been much of a student. A med student barely has time to sleep, let alone cruise Craig's List.
