I can imagine (tho would rather not) that it wouldn’t be very easy for the victim to clearly identify what the weapon was during the attack. 30cm steel rulers are sold by car parts merchandisers so assume they are a tool of the trade.

We already know that he likes to use car related items for dual purpose from his repurposing of the work bench and tow bar, as well as actual cars. Some kind of fetish that’s a new one to me?!

And if cars are some kind of theme, is this also why they was interest in locating vehicles used at the time? Only just had these thoughts, just throwing them out there while we wait for more news.

We know, and therefore so do German LE, that he had use of other vehicles at the time, just speculating why the Jag and VW camper were identified as so important?

Another association possible is that a ruler was previously used in some places as an instrument of punishment against children. Maybe he had been hit with a ruler when younger???

Plus if he were stopped, a ruler is ‘tools of the trade’. I imagine he would get a sick thrill out of the assumption being the motor trade.

The initial request was done on May 4th, by phone. And by November there had been no response?
In the end, no images were found:
Information was also collected that the road known as A22, usually known as “Via Infante de Sagres”, does not have images available either, to match the period of time that would be of interest.

A curious thing about the surveillance cameras along the A22; the request made by PJ was addressed to "RA".

Within the context of the investigation mentioned above into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and following the telephone contact made by officers of this police force on the 4th May 2007 with the Traffic Controller of Euroscut Algarve, Rui Afonso, I request your collaboration as quickly as possible, with relation to the security cameras existing on the A22 VIA DO INFANTE motorway, if there are video recordings of these, especially concerning the time period between 21.00 on 3rd May 2007 and 07.00 of the following day, with respect to the stretch of the A22 between Lagos and the border with Spain of V.R.S ANTONIO and in the affirmative case, their preservation and delivery in digital format to this Police department is requested.

so a video camera which records onto videocassette?

In the late 90s and 00s it was common for video cameras to record to digital video tape (DV cam) rather than solid state media which was very expensive in those days.

That's a very interesting thought, the idea that CB's the keeper of secrets here rather than the perpetrator. Not that CB's an innocent party or anything, more that maybe, as you say, the LE believe from what they've found out about him that he's key and crucial to something much bigger and darker.

Do we have any evidence though that CB was a supplier of children? I know it's just your opinion but what is it based on? I don't recall any actual evidence to conclusively suggest that he was. Have I missed something?

This is why I think the evidence of his prior offending is very interesting.

Tends to follow a classic pattern of public lurking/opportunistic offending, escalating to home invasion/rape. That can escalate to murder but may not.

IMO the "abduction ring" stuff is more in the realms of conspiracy theory until some actual hard evidence supports it.

But I certainly could believe abduction in the context of his personal sexual assaults.

In the end we are still waiting for the prosecutor to show any cards (if he has them)

--- He was shown the pictures from the file. He identified no-one, lamenting the quality of the images.
--- It is the conviction of the undersigned that the witness craved [had a strong desire] to identify someone in those facial images.

German prosecutor Julia Meter told the PA news agency: “The advocate general shares our opinion. “We are pleased and wait for the decision of the court the next few weeks.”


This was on 8/6 - and a few weeks to me is about 3... so maybe around 8/27 they might have a decision. If someone posts about this - please "tag" me! TIA!

NM has been located and interviewed by LE.

That’s eerily similar but I believe she has been located!

I think there’s a possibility of connected crimes. For example HB was very similar in appearance to his GF at that time. Maybe some transference where he’s frustrated in a relationship and takes this out on someone who looks similar?

Doesnt sound very conclusive though -

Derek Flack (statement date 5 May 2007) saw a man with a white van outside the rear of 5A with a man surveying the flat. There was also a man in the cul-de-sac opposite. He drew up an e-fit. He was asked later if Barrington was a match. He said that though there were some similarities, the man he saw was definitely younger. He described the van as being white and something like an Opel Corsa van, quite old. {Barrington’s van was white, a Ford Escort type, and around 8 years old. Barrington was aged around 56 at the time of the incident.}
