German man identified as suspect for Madeleine McCann's disappearance battling to be freed from prison

He denied the crime and has launched a legal challenge against his conviction that will be considered by the European Court of Justice.

It received the case on 8 May and The Independent understands that as it was filed under the “urgent preliminary ruling procedure”, a decision will be made between three and six months from that date. So there is some urgency but it's not tomorrow

Last year’s court case heard evidence describing a room with a sofa and a wooden beam, which matches photos of the new suspect’s home shown on German television.

He was arrested for attacking the American woman after a former friend from Portugal came forward to police revealing that he had stolen a video camera showing the assault.

The witness told the court that he stole the camera from his friend’s house in Praia da Luz in 2006 and that it showed an older woman being tied up, beaten and raped. So not a confession at the same time as the 10th anniversary

Police are seeking information on:
  • A VW T3 Westfalia campervan. Early 1980s model, with two tone markings, a white upper body and a yellow skirting. It had a Portuguese registration plate.
  • A 1993 British Jaguar, model XJR 6, with a German number plate and registered in Germany.
  • The phone number +351 912 730 680, which was being used by the suspect.
  • The second number is +351 916 510 683, which called the suspect on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance.

Thank you for mentioning the carvan Portughese number plate! I was searching it all over

Ok, so here's my theory. In his original statement Gerry said the front door was locked but retracted that later on stating that as they left via the patio it was probably left unlocked. Lets be honest, they would have known, if not before then afterwards but who wants to admit they did that especially when it looks at first glance like the window has been used as the entry point.

The intruder then entered via the front door. Whatever then transpired inside the apartment he makes a decision to take Maddie. How does he know it's now safe to leave with her without being seen? How about opening the window and sticking your head out to see if anyone is about before leaving via the front door again?

The PJ released all the documents in the MM investigations. All the interview notes. It is available on some websites.

Does anyone know if the interviews with CB as a suspect from 2007 onwards are in those released papers.

New detail on previous crime in the Mail.

“At his trial for the offence in Germany last year it emerged he had taken videos of other sex attacks. A pair of swimming goggles with the lenses painted grey were worn by one victims so she would not be able to identify him.”

RBBM

In the first thread, the two numbers were sleuthed.

The second one is still active on Snapchat, but AFAIK, has not been reassigned so far.
ETA: ran again the numbers on Whatsapp & called them, not reassigned.

The person found has such a common name and lacking more specific data, sleuthing him is useless.

regardless of if he is involved in the McCann case he is a very dangerous predator and definitely belongs in jail.

For avoidance of doubt

The current appeal that CB has lodged is a technical one about his arrest in Milan under an European Arrest Warrant (EAW) few years ago and deportation to Germany. It could be something ridiculous like not being given correct paperwork, not signed notices, lack of translation etc. Simple rubbish that lawyers cook up to quash sentences.

His rape conviction is secure.

This is the official appeal from the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) and the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor's Office.

Verdacht auf Tötung eines Kindes! (suspected for murder of a child)

Note: he is suspected of murder, so the Germans think she is no longer alive.

Time pressure

The latest conviction is not yet final because of a possible legal error in Brückner's extradition, reports the newspaper Die Welt on its news site. The German equivalent of our Supreme Court decided in April to involve the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg. That Court supervises compliance with European treaties. The time pressure for the man to be detained for longer explains, according to German media, why the Public Prosecutor's Office in Braunschweig and the German Federal Investigation Department came out on Wednesday evening with the suspicion of the murder of Maddie McCann. This in the hope of tips that can lead to a reasonable suspicion of guilt and an indictment against Brückner.

Stop the bickering and off topic in this thread.

The thread is to discuss the recent news about the "German prisoner identified as suspect #2", not to rehash all the arguments of old.

Also from The Mail, more detail on the apparent windfall following MM’s disappearance which was also reported by The Telegraph...

“It was conspicuous that he had boasted about a sudden financial windfall after he returned from Portugal in 2007. Friends remember him telling them that he had found cash in a pile of clothes, large sums of money, after breaking into a home in the Algarve.

'In addition to a mobile home, he also used the money to buy a derelict factory property in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.”

Thanks for pointing out he was arrested in Milan. Wondering with the videos he has made if he's part of an international ring. Think l agree with earlier suggestion a video was made.

Just had a thought the beam footage is surely from the American tourists home, all reports are he broke into her home. So it's unlikely there is footage of other victims being tied to this beam

I thought the beam was from a video of the 15-20 year old victim or the 40-50 year old where attacks were carried out in the farm house.

I doubt the McCanns or any family thinks about crime in the resort they are going to. Lots of places in Europe such as Spain and Portugal has foreign, including British , dodgy characters. I’ve been to Spanish islands before and saw how easy it was to get drugs, if that was what someone wanted.
It wasn’t called the Costa Del Crime for nothing!
So even Praia da luz would have it’s fair share of opportunist thieves. Mainly low level crime like any tourist resort.
Your more at risk of being a victim of crime abroad than you are at home. Just most people don’t see it.
Child abductions of this nature are thankfully very rare.

Who buys a derelict factory. Chills my blood what he got up to there. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Madeleine McCann: German authorities 'ignored tip-off about suspect in 2013'

German authorities reportedly ignored warnings from their own police seven years ago that suspect Christian B could have abducted and killed Madeleine McCann.

A report from detectives monitoring Christian B identified him as a key suspect in the Madeleine mystery, but it was ignored by Germany's Federal Criminal Office, according to news magazine Der Spiegel.

The 2013 police report was triggered after British detectives made a new appeal in the Madeleine case on a German Crimewatch-style TV show.

Scotland Yard had just launched its own investigation and was appealing to European tourists who might have been in Portugal when Madeline vanished from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007.

The report was sent to federal police HQ by police in Braunschweig, who were monitoring Christian B's criminal behaviour. By that time he already had convictions for child sex abuse.

Der Spiegel writes: "One person did submit a tip about Christian B, but the resulting report from police in Braunschweig to the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation was apparently not acted upon, much to the consternation of the local investigators."

It comes as German police are said to be investigating the new Madeleine suspect for possible involvement in the disappearance of a boy in Portugal in 1996.

They are re-examining the disappearance of Rene Hasee, according to German media.

The then six-year-old from Elsdorf, Germany, went missing from a beach while on holiday with his family in the Portuguese Algarve.

It follows the launch of an investigation into whether the suspect was involved in the disappearance of another child - Inga Gehricke.

The five-year-old vanished during a family barbecue in the Saxony-Anhalt region on 2 May 2015.

She is thought to have wandered into a forest in search of firewood, and is known by German media as "the German Maddie".

Officers have named the suspect - a convicted child sex offender - only as Christian B and have not revealed his surname for legal reasons.

A Sky News investigation discovered last year that he was already being considered as a potential suspect for Inga's disappearance.
