With Malaysia admitting they do not have the experts needed to get the data off the black boxes, surely they won't demand possession of the boxes first! I do not trust them to have them! If Malaysia had any involvement in this mystery, it seems they opened mouth inserted foot!

Oh, the world is use to their changing stories, so is this just another one??

I think there is tension too. I've read in a few places about their suspicion of the CIA. And it could be some of the reason why Australia is so involved (aside from the search being in our international search zone). We could be acting as a 'bridge' between all these tense countries.

Thank goodness for Angus Houston. He's the man to do it. (Though I think it is tiring him out ... he is looking a little weary in his press appearances of late.)

Its funny you say that because the original guy Tony Abott that did a few of the early ones first came on with such energy and excitement and then by the 3rd day he looked awful like he was up for 3 straight days. I felt sorry for him.

The new guy Angus Houston has been fantastic and he also started out with a lot more energy which has fizzled somewhat as time has gone by.

The funniest day was when he was trying to answer each and every question and the air force guy that was with him finally had enough and walked off and Angus took that as his chance to escape and walked off with him.

Its a tough job they have but they have done it far better than most could ever do. I wish Obammas press secretary had half the skills of Angus. We get absolutely zilch from our press secretary.

12 April 2014—am

Up to nine military aircraft, one civil aircraft and 14 ships will assist in today's search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

Today the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has planned a visual search area totalling approximately 41,393 square kilometres. The centre of the search areas lies approximately 2331 kilometres north west of Perth.

Today, Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield continues more focused sweeps with the Towed Pinger Locator to try and locate further signals related to the aircraft's black boxes. The AP-3C Orions continue their acoustic search, working in conjunction with Ocean Shield. The oceanographic ship HMS Echo is also working in the area with Ocean Shield. This work continues in an effort to narrow the underwater search area for when the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is deployed. There have been no confirmed acoustic detections over the past 24 hours.

The weather forecast for today is 10 knot south easterly winds with isolated showers, sea swells up to one metre and visibility of five kilometres in showers.

Aircraft and ships reported spotting a number of objects during yesterday's search, but only a small number were able to be recovered. None of the recovered items were confirmed to be associated with MH370."

Thought both of the men pictured who were said to be traveling on fake passports looked middle eastern. What was strange was the Malaysian policeman who said they looked like an Italian sports star who is black. Mario? Now that was odd.

OT...love that gorgeous yorkie!:blushing:

I caught two things already with the two Iranians which would have raised flags - one, their names don't match their looks. Second, they are not wearing European-style clothing. If you look at their clothes, it looks very obcviously made in a Middle-Eastern/South Asian country. They do not look like clothes sold in Europe. If they were really European citizens, they would be wearing European-style and Europea-quality clothing, esp. on the way back to their "home" country. And there is no way in the world they are going to be shopping for clothes in the countries they are visiting, because the quality of the clothing is much inferior to European or U.S. quality of clothing.

JMO.

The majority of clothing in the US is made in Middle-Eastern or South Asian countries. I think it’s totally reasonable to assume that tourists would purchase clothing in the country they (pretend to) visit.

I'm sorry, they do not look Italian and definately not Austrian to me. I'm sure some do, but the 2 on this flight don't JMO.

Also, it's not just the faces, you have to consider their clothes and their general body structures.

JMO.

In this day and age, that’s sort of like saying that a person doesn’t look like an American or Canadian.

It's a worry when a country's military consider themselves a separate entity to the government. That is coup material! :scared:

I guess it's b/c the people checking the passports aren't taught to use common sense or think about what they're doing. All they do is check to see if passport looks forI ged, check picture against person - I guess that's it!

Some expat Iranians have dual citizenship. So the can use their Iranian passport to and from Iran. Then use their EU passport for re-entry. They can easily say they went "back home to visit family".

Their clothes look normal and I believe the cropped photo of the one guy is because he is wearing shorts.

I've never had to have my fingerprints or photograph taken when I've flown out of Canada to the US. After I check in and check my bags, I go through US Customs only. I've flown out of Calgary International and Toronto International airports.

Maybe it's a random selection type thing?

It's the ones CBSA has not shared with Homeland Security.

IMO, there is no way Malaysia just takes the black boxes, says thank you very much, and goes home. This is a huge costly effort with the results vital to the future of huge companies, etc.

JMO

With Malaysia's sloppiness and lack of technology, I would not trust them with the black boxes.

JMO.

The black boxes are Malaysian property. We can't just demand other countries give us stuff unless we want to start wars. However, I would be shocked if Malaysia took it and ran. I think they are quite aware they owe the world and explanation and could use the help of other countries. It may be technically in their possession, but it will be available to others. I'm sure behind the scenes many of the investigators have worked this stuff out and come to an agreement. But the NTSB isn't just going to preemptively announce it will seize the black box and take it to America to study - that's just not how it works.

Good point. Of course there is. I would think that would be arranged before any country or organization would take part in the search and spend millions of dollars. jmo

Malaysian military withheld data on MH370: source

Authorities from several countries were searching fruitlessly for the missing MH370 flight in the South China Sea for days, even though the Malaysian military reportedly knew the plane was not there.

While Malaysian officials are yet to expressly respond to this latest information, they have earlier justified their decision to withhold data saying that they did not want to risk confusion by sharing unverified data so early on in the each effort.

Meanwhile, a senior military official also told Reuters that air traffic control informed the military that the plane was missing at 2am, despite the plane disappearing from radar from than 45 minutes earlier.

The standard operating procedure required when a civilian plane goes missing is to inform the military within 15 minutes of the plane's disappearance.

I caught myself reading this with an Australian accent b/c so used to the words as Angus Houston says them!

IMO, the Western clothes sold there have very different style and quality, unless you're shopping in the very upscale stores, which even then u can tell a difference in the style. This is what I have seen in some traveling I've done. I would think the same could be said about Latin America, even though many clothes here in US say made in some Latin American country.

The clothes the two Iranians were wearing in the pics were IMO very typical of Western-style clothes worn in those parts.

No, everyone wants clothes sold in US or Europe. Doesn't matter where it states "made in," I'm assuming because US dept stores want only the highest quality, and the rest go to places like Iran, India, etc.. Western clothes sold in US, Canada, Europe are vastly different in quality from Western style clothes sold other places like Middle East.

As for the last part, I said if it's called racial profiling, fine, I was not trying to be PC.

Jmo.

Anyway, I am done with the Iranian men discussion for now. There are still some things I have questions about regarding them. Until we know what exactly happened to the plane, I cannot rule them out.
