'It feels so personal': Tight-knit Maryland city mourns after deadly newspaper shooting | CBC News

Candles representing the slain workers of the Capital Gazette newspaper are displayed during a candlelight vigil near the Capital Gazette's office in Annapolis, Md., on Friday. (Leah Millis/Reuters)
The historic state capital of Annapolis is draped in grief from a shooting attack on the local newspaper, which killed journalists who chronicled soccer games, art exhibits and the fabric of small-city life.

A sign outside The Annapolis Bookstore, a block from the Maryland State House, starkly expresses the depth of sorrow many are feeling in this quaint waterside capital of about 40,000 near the Chesapeake Bay. "There are no words," it says.

Interesting, and not surprising.
From the link:
The only two politicians Ramos had tweeted about, according to Hutson, were Donald Trump and Michael Peroutka, a wealthy neo-Confederate funder turned Maryland county councilman. Hutson has written about Peroutka, as have I. Peroutka had major funding ties to former Alabama judge and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, as well to the League of the South, whose leader, Michael Hill, had written approvingly about plans to form paramilitary groups to fight a militarized “fourth generation” culture war, one of whose targets would be the media.

LOL, Salon is a progressive/liberal website created by David Talbot in 1995 and part of Salon Media Group. Naturally they'd be inclined to project that. Just look how they all but excused James Hodgkinson assassination attempt of GOP senators at a ballgame.

Time will tell, I suppose. I don't believe an "LOL" is appropriate, in any case. Humans were murdered. Let's not forget that, please.

This is a thread about a violent attack on a newsroom. Five people were murdered. Journalists, just like those who work at Salon. LOL.

Blaming the messenger is, in this case, like blaming the victim. IMO

Disagreeing with what's reported is fair. Slagging a reputable source and the hard, credible work the journalists who work there are doing is not fair. But that's just my opinion.

I found this Poynter article enlightening, especially in reference to the Annapolis shooting.

Can journalists counteract hatred toward the press? It starts with explaining what we do.

“There’s always been people who hated journalists - we tell stories that people don’t want to tell, we show up at moments in their lives that are chaotic and hard, and people get upset. But there's something that’s changed, fundamentally shifted,” Tomlin said, “whether it’s the rhetoric or whether it’s the divisiveness in our politics.

It’s undeniable that some partisans, led by the president and aided by influential voices on Fox News and extreme websites, have led a drumbeat of attacks on the press in an effort to discredit reporting that questions their political agendas or exposes wrongdoing.

There’s no evidence that President Trump’s verbal abuse of the press inspired Jarrod Ramos to burst into the Capital Gazette and kill five employees, years after a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit because the article published about him was factual. But there is a frightening through line between the president’s and the gunman’s anger over unflattering press coverage of a special counsel’s investigation or a harassment conviction, even when stories are accurate - and they are not alone. Too many Americans don’t appreciate that it’s journalism’s job to tell truths even when they’re uncomfortable, and that without a free press, there cannot be a healthy democracy.

Note: Poynter is rated highly factual and "least biased."

Capital Gazette reveals how shooting unfolded as memorial services begin in Annapolis

Eleven people were in the room. Within minutes, Hiaasen, editorial page editor Gerald Fischman, 61, editor-writer John McNamara, 56, sales assistant Rebecca Smith, 34, and reporter-editor Wendi Winters, 65, would be fatally shot.

The attacker fired twice at he entered, striking Smith, then picked his way through the room, shooting Winters, Fischman and Hiaasen. McNamara was last, then the shooter apparently ducked under a desk.

Surviving staffers trembled under their desks. The room smelled of gunpowder as police fearlessly swept in, less than two minutes after the first 911 calls. Some tended to victims, others began the search for the gunman.

The motive behind JR's attack on the Capital Gazette was very specific. I don't see it as an attack against media or journalism in general. This attack was not political. IMO

I agree completely.

All indications are that this attack was motivated by a personal grudge. Sure, the attacker like most people, has political views. In addition, A lot of rampage shooters are fundamentally angry people and angry people tend to drift to the far right or extreme left.

The facts that most people have political views and that angry people tend to drift to the extremes, however, does not mean that this attack was politically motivated.

Newspaper Says It Received Threats Following Shooting

The Maryland newspaper where five people were killed by a gunman last week said it received death threats and emails celebrating the shootings following the attack.

The Capital Gazette said in a Sunday editorial that it would not forget being called “an enemy of the people.” President Donald Trump has used identical language to describe the news media.
