Investigators Clear Garrido Property For Monday Probe

The main search effort was halted for the weekend, but work continued on the Garrido property Saturday as investigators searched for clues into two Bay Area missing persons cases.

Using a small earthmover for big pieces, and rakes and barrels for the remaining debris that once filled the backyard of Phillip and Nancy Garrido, investigators continued their work at the Garrido home.

As of Saturday morning, four days after their work began, one quarter of the one acre search area had yet to be cleared of piles of trash and scrap.

Crews are searching the property at 1554 Walnut Ave. for links to the disappearances of two young girls from Dublin and Hayward in the 1980s, but have not found anything conclusive.

Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey said at a news conference Friday afternoon that, after a break for the weekend, crews could begin digging in an "area of interest" Monday afternoon, but that schedule was not definite, she said.

Two groups of dogs will return to the property Monday, cadaver dogs and "bone dogs" that specialize in archaeological investigations.

Investigators are also continuing to use ground-penetrating radar to search underground, and have even brought in an archaeologist, Bill Silva, who said today that he's treating the property as if it were "a prehistoric site."

Channel 4 to air Jaycee Lee Dugard documentary
Monday 21 September 2009 14.13 BST
Documentary on Californian woman freed after over 18 years in captivity to air early next month as part of Cutting Edge strand
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/21/jaycee-lee-dugard-channel-4

Chennal 4 is to air a fast-turnaround documentary on the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard, the Californian woman freed in August after over 18 years in captivity.

The documentary features "the first full-length interview" with Dugard's stepfather Carl Probyn, the prime suspect in the case since the 11-year-old Dugard's kidnap in 1991 until the arrest last month of her kidnapper, Phillip Garrido, with whom she fathered two children.

Captive for 18 Years: The Jaycee Lee Story, the first documentary broadcast in the latest run of flagship Channel 4 documentary strand Cutting Edge, is being made by Question Time producer Mentorn Media.

Dugard's case, which for 18 years had been one of America's most notorious unsolved crimes, was compared in the world's media with that of Natascha Kampusch, who was held prisoner in a dungeon in Austria for more than eight years.

Her discovery caused controversy due to her apparent development of Stockholm syndrome, as a result of which she may have become emotionally attached to her kidnapper, Garrido.

The programme also features interviews with classmates of Dugard as well as her headmistress, and "exclusive interviews with neighbours and business associates of Philip Garrido who reveal that in the months before the discovery, Garrido spoke about his 'conversations with God' and how a big event was coming that would change the world".

Captive for 18 Years was commissioned by Channel 4's Mark Raphael. Steve Anderson will be executive producer for Mentorn Media.

Anderson said: "We have been working on the ground in California ever since Jaycee Lee Dugard was found living in the tents and sheds in the compound belonging to her kidnapper, Phillip Garrido.

"We are piecing together the key elements of an incredible story. The more we discover, the more unbelievable it is."

Captive for 18 Years: The Jaycee Lee Story will air on Thursday 1 October at 9pm on Channel 4.

Mentorn International will be selling the documentary to foreign broadcasters at the Mipcom programming market in Cannes next month.

Searchers begin digging on Garrido property for any clues to other child abductions
ANTIOCH, Calif. September 21, 2009 (AP)

Police investigating two child abductions are starting to dig on the property where a Northern California couple held a girl captive for 18 years.

Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey says search dogs combed the area early Monday. She says two dogs trained to look for human bones detected something in the same vicinity where cadaver dogs picked up a scent last week.

Orrey says if the digging turns up nothing, the search could end Tuesday.

Old Bones Dog Detects Scent In Garrido's Backyard
Updated: 2:02 pm PDT September 21, 2009
<snipped>
A dog specially trained to find older human remains detected a scent in an area of accused kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido's backyard Monday, authorities said.

An old bones dog did alert to a scent in the same area of the Garrido's backyard that attracted the attention of a cadaver dog last week, Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said. A high-tech sonar device also indicated some kind of underground anomaly in that spot, she added.

Orrey said digging would begin in that area Monday afternoon.

ANTIOCH -- Police searching Phillip Garrido's home and property in Antioch discovered more bone fragments Monday but said they appeared to be too old to be connected to any of the cases authorities are trying to link to the convicted rapist and kidnapper.
Authorities used a dog trained to detect the scent of human remains as well as ground penetrating radar that can search up to 25 feet below the surface. But hopes appeared to be dwindling that searchers would discover anything related to the disappearance to two Bay Area girls in the late 1980s. more at link: http://www.sacbee.com/latest/story/2199015.html

More Bones Found on Garrido Property
September 21, 2009
<snipped>
Despite a week of combing over the Antioch property of kidnap suspect Phillip Garrido, law enforcement agencies say they are no closer to solving the disappearances of Michaela Garecht and Ilene Misheloff.

On Monday, searchers found more bones, but they were very old and possibly too old to be connected to the cases, said Lt. Chris Orrey with the Hayward Police Department.

Two different types of dogs searched the Garrido property Monday. One type detects decomposing tissue, the other detects historical remains like old bones.

But by the end of the day, Orrey said the search yielded no clues.

Despite the lack of progress here, police see it as a possible sign that Garecht and Misheloff may still be alive.

But investigators from the Hayward and Dublin police departments said they don't want to leave the property until they are sure they have conducted a thorough search.

The investigation could wrap up this week, but Orrey said investigators will not pull out until, "we are 100 percent confident we didn't leave anything."

Jaycee Dugard case: Digging begins on Garrido property as search for clues to child abductions continues

By Monday afternoon, crews were involved in a detailed process of dividing the area for digging and excavating one section at a time a foot at a time, Orrey said. The dirt was then sifted through trays to find any peculiarities or objects, she said.

Monday's digging found some bone fragments, but forensic experts said the bones were "very, very old and were likely from animals," Orrey said. Bones were found on the Garrido property and a neighboring property last week, but authorities said those will need to be examined to determine whether they are human.

The thorough search of the Garrido property could be completed by today "depending on what we find," Orrey said.

Garrido search may end Tuesday
Monday, september 21, 2009
<snipped>
An exhaustive search of the home and yard on Walnut Avenue has not uncovered anything that could connect - or rule out - the Garridos to the abductions of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht of Hayward in 1988 and 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff of Dublin in 1989, said Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey.

The digging will continue Tuesday, but barring any significant finds, the search may end then, Orrey said.

Sharon Murch, Michaela's mother, stopped by Monday to distribute thank-you letters to the searchers.

"It's been very difficult," Murch said. "It's been very stressful. It's made me kind of nauseous, actually."

Garrido claimed black box could speak his mind
updated 1:42 p.m. EDT, Mon September 21, 2009

The black box sat inside a cabinet. Philip Garrido had given it to a friend for safekeeping, and that's where the friend kept it.

"He feels he can speak to you and me and everyone else using this box," said Garrido's friend and former business client, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"He was a whack job, but he was a whack job who sounded like he had a really good heart," the friend added.

Documents obtained by CNN include a news release that Garrido produced:

"A Bay area man has made a major discovery concerning the phenomenon of voice," the release says, accompanied by a photograph of Garrido.

Police personnel were again wielding shovels Tuesday on the Antioch property where a Northern California couple allegedly held a girl captive for 18 years.

So far, officials say the backyard search has not yet revealed any connections to the 1988 abduction of Michaela Garecht or the 1989 disappearance of Ilene Misheloff.

The investigation could wrap up this week, but Orrey said investigators will not pull out until, "we are 100 percent confident we didn't leave anything."

Digging Comes To A Halt In Antioch
No Official Word On Whether Search Has Stopped
POSTED: 12:30 pm PDT September 22, 2009
UPDATED: 1:42 pm PDT September 22, 2009

Digging came to a stop Tuesday in an ongoing Antioch investigation of two missing girls and searchers put some tools away, but there was no official word on whether police were ending their days-long search for possible remains.

Police could see seen digging early Tuesday, but work came to a stop at about 11 a.m. Shortly after 1 p.m., searchers fanned out and started putting away tools and tents. Some of the investigators' vehicles also left the area.

Officials earlier said they would consider suspending the search if no key evidence was found.

Police: Initial findings don't link Garridos to other disappearances
September 22, 2009
<snipped>
Investigators who completed their search of the California property belonging to kidnapping suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido said initial findings do not connect the couple to the disappearances of two young girls.

But police said that they have not eliminated Phillip Garrido as a suspect in the decades-old cases.

Bone fragments found on the couple's property near Antioch could be human but are "far too old to be relevant in our cases," said Lt. Chris Orrey of the Hayward police department.

Although nothing [was found] that would definitively link Phillip and Nancy Garrido to the disappearance of Ilene Misheloff or Michaela Garecht, we're going to continue to follow up on the evidence that we have recovered," Lt. Kurt von Savoye of the Dublin Police Department said at the news conference.

"We're going to examine and process all items that have been taken from this property to see if there is any possible link to the Garridos."

The processing of all the evidence could take several weeks, Orrey said.
