Animal Services Caring for More Than a Dozen of Jaycee Dugard's Pets

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (BCN) -- Contra Costa County Animal Services is caring for five cats, two dogs, three cockatiels, a pigeon and a mouse confiscated from the home where kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard spent the past 18 years.

In addition, a parakeet taken from the home is in foster care as animal care officials await word on when they can reunite the pets with Dugard and her two daughters, Animal Services Lt. Nancy Anderson said Wednesday.

Anderson said the dogs were confiscated from the yard and that other animals were taken from the outbuildings. She said they are in good health.

"They are doing really well, really friendly and well taken care of," she said.

One of the dogs is a Rottweiler mix and the other is a Labrador mix, Anderson said. The pigeon was caged, as was the mouse.

"The cats are really sweet," she said.

Anderson said Dugard and her daughters, through a liaison, have made clear they are interested in getting their pets back, although there is no time frame yet for when that might happen.

"We're just hoping that we can arrange to get them back to Jaycee and the kids as soon as possible," she said.

Looking for Michaela Garecht: Mother Hopes Jaycee Dugard Case Will Lead to Her Daughter
Michaela Garecht's Mother Hoping Daughter Can Hear Her: ' I Love You'
Sept. 16, 2009
<snipped>
Sharon Murch is watching the search at Phillip and Nancy Garrido's home with a renewed flicker of hope, hoping against all odds that her daughter Michaela, stolen 21 years ago, will emerge from the sheds and tents of that nightmarish back yard.

The disappearance of Michaela, who was kidnapped from Hayward, Calif., in 1988, is one of two missing children cases that police believe could be connected to the couple who is accused of kidnapping Jaycee Dugard and holding her in a backyard laybrinth of sheds and tents for 18 years.

The other child, 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff vanished from Dublin just months later, in January 1989, after taking a short cut across a creek bed on her way home from school.

Michaela was just 9 years old when she was snatched in broad daylight after she and her friend were allowed to take their scooters to a nearby the grocery store. It was the first time Michaela was allowed to take the trip on her own.

Kidnapping of Lake Tahoe Girl Haunted Her Classmates
Monday, Sep 14, 2009 @ 14:49:44 PM
<snipped>
Imagine knowing that one of your classmates in elementary school was kidnapped on her way to her bus stop and not seen or heard from for over 18 years. This was the case in South Lake Tahoe at Meyers Elementary School when Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted in 1991. According to one of her classmates, Missy McBride, "Everybody was scared, and the parents were even more scared than the kids." With Dugard's recovery a few weeks ago, many of her classmates like McBride had a flood of memories.

Kristina Rhoden, who was one of Dugard's classmates in fifth grade, said she had an "overflow of fear" when school was locked down and year-end activities were cancelled following Dugard's kidnapping. In addition, Rhoden says, "We just couldn't believe that someone we knew was kidnapped, that no one was really safe." Since Dugard's release from captivity, she has been with her family at an undisclosed location in the Bay Area. Many reports have said that she will make a TV appearance on the "Oprah Show" in December.

Jaycee Dugard to be reunited with her pets
Cats, dogs, cockatiels are among animals removed from Garrido’s house

Jaycee Dugard and her daughters are preparing for another happy homecoming: with their animals.

Pets removed from Phillip Garrido's house after his Aug. 26 arrest on kidnapping and rape charges include five cats, two dogs, three cockatiels, a pigeon, white mice and a parakeet.

Animal control officials say that only one of the mice is still alive — but other than that, the pets remain in good health, and Jaycee, 29, Starlit, 15, and Angel, 11, are anxious to get them back.

Anderson says a liaison for Dugard has made it clear she and the girls want the pets back soon, but it was unclear exactly when the reunion would happen. Dugard, her daughters, and her mother are with counselors in an undisclosed location in El Dorado County, which is prosecuting the Garridos.

Police on Tuesday resumed searching Phillip Garrido's Antioch-area home, this time looking for evidence that might tie him to the late 1980s abductions of two young Bay Area girls who have never been found.

Numerous law enforcement agencies descended on the home and a house next door where the Garridos served as caretakers to look for clues in the Jan. 30, 1989, disappearance of Ilene Misheloff, a 13-year-old who was last seen walking home from school in Dublin.

Police find more bones on second day of Garrido property search

About 60 detectives from five agencies converged Tuesday on the cluttered site where police say Jaycee Dugard was held since disappearing 18 years ago

Orrey said they also are looking for disturbed soil that could indicate a grave site. They are bringing in a magnetometer — which could locate fillings from teeth — as well as ground-penetrating radar. Orrey does not think earlier searches used such equipment.

"It's probably the most intensive search Hayward has been involved in. I'm not aware of a larger one," she said.

Officials plan to hold daily news conferences each afternoon for the duration of the search.

Cops: Bones Found on Garrido, Neighboring Properties
September 16, 2009

Searchers found what appeared to be bones Wednesday on the Antioch property of Phillip and Nancy Garrido and that of an adjacent property being searched in the renewed investigations of two missing East Bay girls.

"We can't tell at this point if those bones are human or animal. They're going to have to be sent out for further lab work to make that determination," said Lt. Chris Orrey with the Hayward Police Department.

Police concluded their first day of searching without making any "earth-shaking" discoveries, they said. They indicated they are willing to remove the entire Garrido house in order to not overlook any possible clues.

Cadaver dogs indicate possible remains on Garrido property
September 17, 2009
updated 1 hour, 47 minutes ago
<snipped>
Authorities will use ground-penetrating radar equipment on Friday to examine the area, and "we will eventually be digging in that location," said Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey.

Police said the spot that the dogs showed interest in was in "open ground" on the Garrido property. The first dog gave a tentative indication of something there, so the second dog was brought in and made a more definite indication, said Sgt. J.D. Nelson of Alameda County Sheriff's Office. The dogs, which undergo between six months and a year of training, are trained to find human remains.

It is possible for the dogs to give "false positives," Nelson said -- a reason why the second dog was brought in. However, since both dogs showed interest, going forward with the other methods is recommended, he said.

Orrey said the digging could begin as soon as Friday, but was not sure when it would occur.

Calif. case casts harsh spotlight on sex offenders
September 16, 2009
<snipped>
After being locked away for 25 years for sex crimes, Donald Robinson moved to a little block of unassuming homes in this city on the San Francisco Peninsula on Aug. 27.

The timing couldn't have been worse. It was the day after Phillip Garrido was arrested just 40 miles away on charges that he kidnapped 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard and held her captive for 18 years despite his long criminal record as a sex offender.

Police distributed fliers in Robinson's new neighborhood, alerting residents that he was living there. He has been targeted by a protest rally organized by the mayor and daily picketing outside his house. And the state is paying two security guards $800 a day each to protect him.

Orrey did not specify how many bones were found Wednesday but said one came from Garrido's property and the rest from the neighboring property during a thorough debris-removal process.

Orrey said at an afternoon news conference today that investigators had found several items that they want to take a closer look at, but she didn't specify what they were. She said investigators also removed photos of Dugard from the Garrido property.

Law enforcement returned to the Garrido residence in unincorporated Antioch, Calif. Sept. 15, 2009 searching for evidence in connection with two unsolved child disappearance cases from the late 1980's.

Police found more bones Wednesday in their search of Phillip Garrido's Antioch-area home and an adjoining property, but said they did not know whether they were human or animal.

Authorities did not give details about the bones discovered Wednesday.

They said more searches would continue today and that ground-penetrating radar and search dogs would be used once the property was clear of debris, trees and buildings that could impede their efforts.

Investigators on Tuesday resume work at Phillip Garrido's home in Antioch, walking toward the backyard where Jaycee Lee Dugard reportedly was held for 18 years. Officers from several agencies searched the home and a site next door for clues in the disappearances of two young Bay Area girls in the 1980s.

Cadaver Dogs Pick Same Spot on Garrido Property
Searchers making quick work of the Garrido property
Updated 8:31 PM CDT, Thu, Sep 17, 2009
<snipped>
Two separate dogs became interested in the spot Thursday, according to detectives. The dogs were sent to search the property at separate times with separate handlers, so the fact that the same area was spotted could be significant. Investigators said more sophisticated equipment will be brought in Friday to dig where the dogs appeared to find something. The dogs are specifically trained to find cadavers.

Crews will also remove and dig under at least two random slabs of concrete on the Garrido property at some point Friday before taking the weekend off.

Other than the dog finding, there were no big developments Thursday from the extensive search of the property.

Cadaver Dogs Find Scent In Garrido's Yard
Sep 17, 2009 7:33 pm US/Pacific
<snipped>
Nelson would not disclose where in the yard the dogs picked up a scent and warned of false positives.

Investigators planned to use high-tech radar equipment to scan the site on Friday. They would start digging if the radar gives more specific information about what is underground, Nelson said.

Cadaver dogs are trained to sniff for the scent of a decomposing body and can catch smells of up to two or three feet, Nelson said.

"They picked up a scent that may or may not be a sign of some remains," Nelson said. "The first dog was very tentative on its indication. The second dog was more direct and indicating directly."

Independent Minds: Recent photo of Jaycee Lee Dugard? (link)

The Website, Independent Minds, has posted a photo from a recently published National Enquirer claiming the image of a woman on a printing company business card is that of a grown Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Nonetheless, Independent Minds questions whether the photo on the Printing for Less card is actually Jaycee, since CNN reports that sources who have met with Jaycee and a family spokesperson say the photo is not of her.
