Spokeswoman for Jaycee Dugard calls director’s movie plans ‘breathtakingly cruel’
November 17th, 2009
<snipped>
In a statement Tuesday, family spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer called a plan to make a movie about Dugard’s life “exploitive, hurtful and breathtakingly unkind.”

The statement came after Shane Ryan — the director of low-budget horror movies such as “Amateur *advertiser censored* Star Killer” and “Romance Road Killers” — announced that he expected to start production next month on “Abducted Girl, An American Sex Slave.”

Filmmaker defends plan for Jaycee Dugard movie
Low-budget horror director Shane Ryan claims that the film will not be exploitative
NOVEMBER 18, 2009
<snipped>
Now filmmaker Shane Ryan, whose previous works have such titles as Amateur *advertiser censored* Star Killer, Warning!!! Pedophile Released and Sex Kids Party aka The More the Better, has announced his intention to bring Dugard's story to the big screen.

The 24-year-old director's promise not to exploit Dugard seems to be at odds with his admission that his previous movies have traded off the shock value of their titles. "We've learned in marketing that some of those quotes work for some people," he said.

He concluded defiantly: "It IS NOT about Jaycee, it IS NOT *advertiser censored*, we ARE NOT making a penny off of this film."

Tracking sex-crime offenders gets trickier
Violator registry is growing as tech-savvy predators put a greater burden on officers
Monday, November 23, 2009
<snipped>
The problem has gained national attention with the discovery of 10 bodies and a skull at a registered sex offender's home in Cleveland and revelations that Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped at age 11 in 1991 and allegedly held captive at a California sex offender's house until her reappearance in August. Officers had visited both homes and noticed nothing wrong.

Those cases underscore a troubled registry system that has been the public face of sex-offender monitoring. An estimated 100,000 offenders do not comply with registration requirements. Law enforcement doesn't know where many of them are.

Officer who cracked Dugard case speaks in Rancho
November 23, 2009 12:40 PM
<snipped>
The UC Berkeley campus police officer who helped crack the Jaycee Dugard kidnapping case in August returned to Santa Margarita Catholic High School Monday, offering details on the day alleged kidnapper Phillip Garrido entered the campus police department and encouraging students — as she did — to pursue their passions.

The suspicions of Allison Jacobs and her colleague, Police Specialist Lisa Campbell, led to the arrest of Garrido – a convicted kidnapper and rapist – in connection with the 1991 abduction of 11-year-old Dugard.

Despite the dangers of the job, Jacobs said she can't imagine doing anything else. And, even with her celebrity at Santa Margarita Catholic and nationwide, she ought not be considered a hero.

"I feel humbled by all of this," she said.

Corporal Allison Jacobs says it was a mother's instinct that led her to question Phillip Garrido, the man who held Jaycee Lee Dugard captive in his back yard for 18 years.

"For the first time in my career I couldn't read their eyes. It was very unsettling for me," Jacobs said.

Jacobs was recently interviewed by People magazine to be featured as one of the magazine's heroes of the year.

Officer who helped capture Garrido tells teens to trust their instincts
On a visit to Santa Margarita Catholic High School, UC Berkeley police Officer Ally Jacobs says she learned as a youngster to listen to the inner voice telling her to do the right thing.

She watched "The Silence of the Lambs" as a girl and so related to Jodie Foster's character that she wanted to become an FBI agent and go after psychopaths.

On Monday, the 1994 Santa Margarita Catholic High School graduate returned for alumni career day and told students that her brush with fame stemmed from trusting that voice in her head that told her that something wasn't right about the man later arrested and charged with Dugard's kidnap and rape.

"One day I woke up, went to work and did my job," she told a rapt audience in the school gymnasium. "This guy comes in to work, a little off, with two kids, and after interviewing him I just got this weird feeling, and I followed up on it."

She also said she someday hopes to meet Dugard's mother. "It won't be televised, I hope," she said, smiling. "I'll cry my eyes out."

Nancy Garrido's lawyer fights his removal from case
Saturday, November 28, 2009
<snipped>
Court documents filed this week indicate Nancy Garrido's former attorney was removed after he was accused of drunkenly talking about the case – and a possible book or movie deal – at his country club bar.

In his appeal to the Third District Court of Appeal to stay the removal order, Gilbert Maines denied allegations that he'd ever sought to exploit his client's life story. He also said that his response to the media was consistently "no comment," except for one live interview.

Nancy Garrido provided a declaration, filed with the appeal documents, saying that she wants to retain Maines as her lawyer.

Stephen A. Tapson has been appointed to represent Nancy Garrido until a hearing Monday in El Dorado Superior Court.

Tracking sex-crime offenders gets trickier with wireless devices
Parolees jump online with cell phones and flock to social networking sites to stalk children

The pursuit of Lee Shelton began the moment the convicted sex offender was released from prison.

It ended months later with a U.S. Marshals Service helicopter hovering near a D.C. junior high school as Shelton kissed a 14-year-old boy. In between, authorities used two Global Positioning System devices to help track him, learned he was online at the library and seized a secret laptop with a power source in the trunk of his car. His parole was revoked, and he is back in jail.

Attorney fights to stay on Dugard kidnapping case

Gilbert Maines filed a request late Wednesday with the Third District Court of Appeal asking that Monday's scheduled hearing in El Dorado County Superior Court be delayed. The appeals court responded with an order that temporarily halts his removal from the case.

The court offices are not open today and the order was not available there, but Maines' law office posted a copy on its Web site just after noon.

Garrido, 54, is accused along with her husband, 58-year-old Phillip Garrido, of abducting Jaycee Lee Dugard from South Lake Tahoe in 1991 when the girl was 11. In August, Dugard was found living in the Garridos' Antioch-area backyard along with two girls authorities say she bore to Phillip Garrido during her 18-year captivity. The Garridos face kidnapping, sexual assault and other charges that could send them to prison for life.

Both have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to appear in court again on Dec. 11.

Appeal temporarily keeps Nancy Garrido's lawyer on case

Nancy Garrido's attorney has won a key step in his fight to remain on the high-profile kidnapping case, with a state appeals court issuing a stay in a lower court's order that he be ousted.

The court offices were closed Friday, but Maines' law office posted a copy of the one-page order on its Web site, www.maineslaw.com, just after noon Friday.

Online court records indicate Maines filed the request for a stay of Monday's hearing on Wednesday, one day after the appeals court rejected another, related request from Maines regarding his removal.

In its Tuesday decision, the appeals court also denied a request from Maines that his court filing on the matter be sealed.

California corrections department spokesman Gordon Hinkle said the agent and his family were moved to a new location after he was publicly identified. His children had to be taken out of school because of threats, Hinkle said Wednesday.

Lance Corcoran, a spokesman for the parole agents' union, says the transfer was not disciplinary.

The lawyer for Nancy Garrido, defendant in the Jaycee Dugard kidnapping, is back on case
November 28, 2:19 AM

A state appeals judge has blocked a lower court judge's order to remove Nancy Garrido's lawyer from her case. Nancy Garrido and her husband, Phillip Garrido, are charged with kidnpapping Jaycee Dugard and holding her captive for 18 years.

An El Dorado Superior Court Judge had ordered attorney Gilbert Maines off Nancy Garrido's case after witnesses said he had discussed loudly at a country club about a movie and book deal on the case. Garrido said she wanted Maines to stay on her case. On Wednesday, November 25, the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento set aside the lower court's decision.

Documents made public today by the California 3rd District Court of Appeal show the appeal court has ordered a stay in efforts to remove Gilbert Maines for alleged improper behavior in the case.

The court also ordered that opposition to having Maines remain on the case be filed by Dec. 7 and that Maines reply to that within 10 days.

A hearing to finalize his removal was scheduled to take place in Phimister's court at 1 p.m. today, but that hearing was canceled after the appeal court issued a stay of his removal late Wednesday. The appeal court also rejected Maines' request that his appeal be sealed, and it was released today.

Legal experts discuss attempt to oust defense lawyer in Jaycee Dugard case

The images conjured up by the allegations against Nancy Garrido's attorney are almost laughable: a lawyer drinking in his country club bar and boasting about the huge case he's been handed.

But are they enough to warrant his removal from the case?

"He's a really good judge," said Don Heller, another high-profile Sacramento defense attorney and former prosecutor. "In cases with a court-appointed attorney, there's an obligation to ensure that the lawyers the judge appoints conduct themselves with the highest ethical standards.

"So, ethical and competent lawyers don't shoot their mouths off at the bar about writing a book about a high-profile case."

The Bee sued the state corrections department today along with two other news media, seeking to force the release of documents outlining how parole agents supervised accused kidnapper Phillip Garrido over the course of 10 years during which he allegedly held Jaycee Lee Dugard as his prisoner.

The suit, filed in Sacramento Superior Court this afternoon, is the latest effort by the newspaper to gain access to the documents, which corrections officials have refused to release since August.

California corrections officials are being sued for refusing to release information on a man accused of holding a girl hostage for 18 years, authorities said.

Three media companies, The Sacramento Bee, KCRA-TV and the San Francisco Chronicle filed suit Friday in Sacramento Superior Court against the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the California Inspector General's Office.

Friday, corrections spokesman Oscar Hidalgo said his agency could not release the records because of privacy laws related to parolees and because of the ongoing investigation in the Dugard case.
