Zimmerman lawyer to move ‘asap’ against NBC News

Last night’s not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial will enable the neighborhood-watch volunteer to resume his case against NBC News for the mis-editing of his widely distributed call to police.

Zimmerman attorney James Beasley also said, "it’s simply time for us to start the case and hold accountable anyone who was irresponsible in their journalism.”

Leonard Pitts: Zimmerman verdict leaves key question unanswered

Let us give the jury the benefit of the doubt.

Let us assume that, within the narrow constraints of the evidence at hand and Florida’s bizarre gun laws, six good women rendered the only verdict they could Saturday night in acquitting George Zimmerman of murder and manslaughter in the killing of Trayvon Martin. Even so, the problem remains. Whatever legal closure it gives, this verdict does not satisfy, any more than a guilty verdict would have, the central moral question here:

Why?

Why did Zimmerman regard Trayvon as suspicious when all he did was wear a hooded sweatshirt while walking in the rain? Why did initial police reports designate Trayvon the suspect when he was actually the unarmed victim? Why was his assailant able to go home that same night?

George Zimmerman’s father lays out long list of foes, calls NAACP, Black Caucus ‘racist’ in e-book
The media, the New Black Panthers, the National Basketball Players Association, Eric Holder and Rev. Al Sharpton — even the Florida governor and its attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecutor Angela Corey and the NAACP — few are spared in a newly-released e-book by Robert Zimmerman Sr. Zimmerman’s eldest son, Robert Zimmerman Jr., confirmed the authenticity of the e-book in a text message to NBC News on Monday.

AG calls Martin killing an 'unnecessary shooting'

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...p-ag_holder_martin_death_unnecessary_shoot-ap

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday the killing of Trayvon Martin was a "tragic, unnecessary shooting" and that the 17-year-old's death provides an opportunity for the nation to speak honestly about complicated and emotionally charged issues..........

"Independent of the legal determination that will be made, I believe that this tragedy provides yet another opportunity for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally charged issues that this case has raised," Holder said in remarks to the 51st national convention of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

"We must not — as we have too often in the past — let this opportunity pass," he added.

"Violence, riots don’t materialize after George Zimmerman’s verdict, but some in media cry foul" http://www.washingtontimes.com/news...merman-ve/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

...We saw no violence in this country that was related to this case. We are very proud of the discipline this generation of young people has shown. I’m sad to say that my own generation didn’t show such discipline when we were outraged and heartbroken at the verdict in the Rodney King case,” [NAACP President] Mr. Jealous said during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program Sunday.

I think we should, right now, be celebrating the fact that we’ve seen a generation of young people respond by using our system; raising their voices, yes, but not using their fists,” he said.

Thousands of demonstrators from across the country -- chanting, praying and fighting tears -- protested a jury's decision to clear neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager, and organizers say they'll try to maintain the momentum with vigils next weekend.
Rallies on Sunday were largely peaceful as demonstrators voiced their support for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's family and decried the verdict. Police in Los Angeles said they arrested six people, mostly for failure to disperse, after about 80 protesters gathered in Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard and an unlawful assembly was declared. New York police said at least a dozen people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges during a rally in Times Square.

Zimmerman verdict: Grief, anger channeled into action
Two days after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in Trayvon Martin's shooting death, the initial grief among supporters of the dead teen is being channeled into protests, marches and calls for action echoing across the country.
In Florida, elected officials, civil rights leaders and community organizers are pushing harder for U.S. Department of Justice to continue its investigation into possible civil rights violations against Zimmerman, the 29-year-old Neighborhood Watch volunteer who killed the unarmed 17-year-old in Feb. 2012.

Juror: Zimmerman's 'heart was in right place' but judgment was lacking

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/15/justice/zimmerman-juror-book/index.html

(CNN) -- One of the jurors who acquitted George Zimmerman said she believed his "heart was in the right place" the night he killed Trayvon Martin, but that he didn't use "good judgment" in confronting the Florida teen.

The juror spoke to CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" on Monday night. Her identity was concealed.

"I think George Zimmerman is a man whose heart was in the right place, but just got displaced by the vandalism in the neighborhoods and wanting to catch these people so badly that he went above and beyond what he really should have done. But I think his heart was in the right place. It just went terribly wrong," she said.

If anything, the juror said she thought Zimmerman was guilty of not using "good judgment."

"When he was in the car, and he had called 911, he shouldn't have gotten out of that car," she said.........

Zimmerman probably feared for his life before shooting Martin, and it was his voice that was heard screaming for help in 911 calls, the juror said she believes.

Community leaders gathered in Leimert Park on Monday, urging protesters to be peaceful at an evening vigil honoring Trayvon Martin.

About 10 representatives from local activist organizations gathered with law enforcement and political officials to broadcast their united message: “Let’s honor Trayvon Martin’s legacy by not breaking the law. Let’s keep it peaceful,” said Najee Ali, a local activist who spoke first on the group’s behalf.

Activists called not for an end to protests, but for an emphasis on demonstrations that are calm and controlled. .........more......

The Truth About Trayvon

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/16/opinion/the-truth-about-trayvon.html?_r=0

THE Trayvon Martin verdict is frustrating, fracturing, angering and predictable. More than anything, for many of us, it is exhausting. Exhausting because nothing could bring back our lost child, exhausting because the verdict, which should have felt shocking, arrived with the inevitability that black Americans know too well when criminal law announces that they are worth less than other Americans........

Lawyers on both sides argued repeatedly that this case was never about race, but only whether prosecutors proved beyond a reasonable doubt that George Zimmerman was not simply defending himself when he shot Mr. Martin. And, indeed, race was only whispered in the incomplete invocation that Mr. Zimmerman had “profiled” Mr. Martin. But what this case reveals in its overall shape is precisely what the law is unable to see in its narrow focus on the details. ............

Juror: Zimmerman had right to defend himself

MIAMI (AP) - A juror in the George Zimmerman trial said Monday that the actions of the neighborhood watch volunteer and Trayvon Martin both led to the teenager's fatal shooting last year, but that Zimmerman didn't actually break the law.

The juror said she didn't think Martin's race was the reason that Zimmerman followed him. She said she also believed Martin threw the first punch and that Zimmerman, whom she referred to as "George," had a right to defend himself.

"I have no doubt George feared for his life in the situation he was in at the time," the juror said.

B37 said some jurors wanted to find Zimmerman guilty of something, but there was just no place to go based on the law,

George Zimmerman juror drops plan to write a book

http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/george-zimmerman-juror-drops-plan-to-write-a-book

The juror had planned to write the book with her husband, who is an attorney, explaining how the jury had "no option" but to find Zimmerman not guilty, but she subsequently decided not to proceed with publication, Martin added later.

The juror did not spell out the reasons for her change of heart but said her isolation in the jury room meant she had not been fully aware of the outrage over the case.

"The potential book was always intended to be a respectful observation of the trial from my and my husband's perspectives solely and it was to be an observation that our 'system' of justice can get so complicated that it creates a conflict with our 'spirit' of justice," she said in the written statement.

"Now that I am returned to my family and to society in general, I have realized that the best direction for me to go is away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life as it was before I was called to sit on this jury," she added.

Juror: Zimmerman's 'heart in the right place'
Juror B37 found it hard to understand what witness Rachel Jeantel was talking about.
And after the jurors acquitted George Zimmerman in the death of Jeantel's friend Trayvon Martin, the feeling certainly was mutual.
After a trial that divided many Americans by their views on race, guns and self-defense, CNN's exclusive interviews with the witness and the juror Monday night illustrated their starkly different frames of reference.

Zimmerman protesters raid LA store, stop freeway

Protesters ran through Los Angeles streets Monday night, breaking windows, attacking people on sidewalks and at one point raiding a Wal-Mart store, while others blocked a major freeway in the San Francisco Bay Area in the third night of demonstrations in California over George Zimmerman's Florida acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Thirteen people were arrested after multiple acts of vandalism and several assaults in Los Angeles' Crenshaw District, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck said at a news conference.
Garcetti and Beck didn't elaborate on the assaults or any injuries, but at least one man could be seen in the street with a head injury.

Photo of Zimmerman's great-grandfather raises questions about racial profiling

An Orlando lawyer said he does not believe George Zimmerman's shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was racially motivated. CNN analyst Mark NeJame pointed to a black-and-white picture of a family of three, including a dark-skinned man he claims was Zimmerman's great-grandfather."If President Obama says his son would have looked like Trayvon Martin, then if you look at these pictures, his grandparents and great-grandparents would have looked like George Zimmerman's grandparents and great-grandparents".
