My mind has wondered and wandered all over the place too, Lilibet. It's why I keep coming back to the thread.

I've never been sure whether or not JR (or his PI) has had *direct* contact with the Chinese embassy, or maintained/followed up on any contact with them.

I might have to do a dive back into my old posts on previous threads (yikes!!); I recall posting about/discussing this last year... sometime. Part of the problem, iirc, is that there was a period where many posts on the HFJ page were deleted.

If it helps you find it, JR posted dismissively about the Chinese Embassy statement in June 2016 when he was asked about it. It will probably be under comments on an unrelated post of his.

I don't think he ever actually said he had direct contact with the Chinese Embassy. Here's what he said in an early article on 4/24/16...

Reinhard said he has been working with Mexican and U.S. officials. He is also working with Chen’s family back in China to seek help from Chinese officials.

That does help, thank you.

I'm almost tempted to contact the embassy myself.

That's a thought! You go girl!

I checked thread #1 and HFJ and I haven't found anything about JR having direct contact with the Chinese Embassy. There could be something buried in an article or comment though. But here is the first mention of Jenny's parents visit to Mexico and the Chinese Embassy on WS. It's an interesting section of the thread, even though it doesn't answer whether JR had direct contact.

Here's the first post on thread #1 on 6/11 by Jersey Girl about the Embassy story. It was revealed in comments to an article in the Northwest Asia Weekly ...its the same article JR commented on debunking the story....all removed. If he commented on HFJ it will be after the publication date of this article on 6/9/16. ETA: I found nothing.

Quite a discussion on WS ensues. Slowpoke posted a quote of JR's comments on the article. Yay slowpoke!!

Dear C,
The Oaxaca police put on quite a show for Jenny’s parents. How could she be traveling for almost two months without any money?? I have her bank records. These types of stories produced wild rumors with NO substance, and deviate from the true investigation that my legal and investigative team have put together. We need to focus on her last substantiated sighting, which was with the truck company with Corona logos. We are working hard on that PROVEN lead, not silly rumors."

My reaction to this news a couple of posts later is pretty intense. :D

Side point...while looking for this post, I ran across the fact that JR had met with Corona and the transport company and was going to be allowed full access to the drivers without LE. He posted this on 6/12/16, the day after he posted his reply about the Chinese Embassy. I wonder what happened.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/helpfindjenny/permalink/626613840846997/

Reading parts of thread #1 makes it clear that this case has been stuck in the same place for over a year...still focused on Corona and Kugar...deja vu all over again. Meanwhile, did the Chinese Embassy follow up?

Jr keeps stating that Jose is the suspect. But he keeps asking his followers to link him to the guys Facebook page. Plus he didn't know that the driver stopped working there until someone told him. Plus there's confusion over there because the driver had put he worked for the Mexico government. So Jr wanted people to send him the Facebook link even though its been on the guys Facebook page since a poster on his page found the Facebook page months ago.

So how much does Jr believe the guy is responsible if he barely keeps track of his employment and Facebook page?

Can we indulge in a flight of fantasy for a moment?

Imagine you're a reporter, doing an in depth article on Jenny. And imagine that you have full access to interview a) the person at the Chinese embassy in charge of her case & liaising with LE, b) her family in China.

What are the questions you would ask them?

What are the questions you would ask them?
a)1. When was the last time Jenny's passport was used? Any confirmation it was Jenny who used it?

2. When was the last time you were in contact with JR? Would ask the Seattle PD, American Embassy in Mexico and Mexican and Chinese Consulates in San Francisco (I think those are the ones that cover Seattle) the same.

3. What is your theory on what happened to Jenny (if they don't know already)? Do you think Corona/delivery truck driver is involved?

b) Is she back in China? If not, do you know for sure where she is?

Very good post, Sjm!

ETA: Another question for Jenny's family: When did you last communicate with JR? If you found out (if they don't know already) where she is or what happened to her, would you let him know?

So how much do we believer JR?

Tssiemer, I LOVE your short, pointed comments!!! :D To answer your question, I believe him maybe 85-90% because I have no proof otherwise. But I don't think he has shown himself to be a particularly upright, honest person in his general life, so I wonder how much of that has spilled over into Jenny's disappearance and his search.

Yes, great question, and this is a great response. All of those ^ and a few more:

I would ask more details about the last time her passport was used - when, where, who checked it, and when was it used before that? To put it on a map and a timeline.

And I would ask about her family's movements wrt China-USA-Mexico. When, where, how long did they spend in each specific place?

Does anyone in the Embassy, or anyone in Chinese LE suspect JR? Have they investigated him?

Great questions!!

I would ask the Embassy:

1) Did JR initially establish contact with you? When? Has he maintained contact?

2) Did you ever suspect that he had a role in Jenny's disappearance and investigate his story about his time in Cancun?

3) What evidence did LE produce that showed Jenny was still traveling in May? Was it convincing? Why?

4) Do you have any evidence that Jenny returned to China or traveled out of Mexico?

5) Have you continued to work with LE as you said you would?

6) What do you think of the Corona truck driver story? Have you followed up on that in any way?

I would ask her family some of the same questions and more:

1) When did JR notify you that Jenny was missing? Or did you have to contact him first when Jenny stopped communicating?

2) What was your first reaction? Did you wonder if JR had done something to her?

3) What was your relationship with and feeling about JR before Jenny disappeared? Did you approve of their marriage?

5) Did you sense that Jenny was planning to leave JR?

6) Did Jenny struggle with depression, bipolar or any other issue?

7) Was Jenny always bold and a risk-taker?

4) What evidence did LE give you that Jenny was still backpacking in May. Did you really believe it? Was there pressure to accept it and let the matter go? Is so, do you think her anti-China posts affected what the Chinese Embassy was willing to do.

5) Do you and JR keep in touch?

6) Is Jenny back home?

7) Do you believe the Corona truck story?

8) What do you think happened to Jenny?

A timeline question for Jenny's family adding to my first question for them above...

Was JR still in Cancun or back in Seattle when you learned about Jenny not arriving in Cancun?

Great questions, and nuances, you all! Reading through them, I think our fantasy investigative journalist should also have (fantasy) full access to interview LE in Mexico.

I have questions to add for both family & the embassy:
- are you still in contact (with each other)?
- what follow-up has been done (on both sides) since family visit to Mexico?

For embassy:
- Are you still in contact with Mexican LE?
- are you currently in contact with JR?

For family:
- when did Jenny tell you she was going to Mexico?
- Were you concerned about her travelling there alone?

I wonder what JR found out about whether JSR still works for Kugar. He said was going to check on it on August 9. Nothing yet.

...Impunity. That’s the pervading factor that experts say plagues the Mexican judicial system, year after year.

“Nobody gets convicted for anything,” said Clare Ribando Seelke, a specialist in Latin American affairs with the Congressional Research Service. “The rule of law is not really there.”

In fact, as many as 92% of crimes go unreported and uninvestigated in Mexico, according to a 2015 victims survey by the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia. The main reason: lack of trust in the authorities.

Of those crimes that are reported, fewer than 5% result in convictions, according to another study by the Center of Studies on Impunity and Justice at Universidad de Las Americas, published in 2015.

Essentially, that means about 99% of crimes go unpunished. Mexico ranks second highest in the world on the Global Impunity Index, just behind the Philippines, according to a 2016 report from the same university.

Horrific! Very hard to read but thanks for posting it. JR has been up against an impenetrable law "enforcement" and "injustice" system.

In reference to the statistic that 99% of crimes go unpunished and only 5% of reported crimes result in convictions...I'm reminded of something JR said last year. When LE was dragging its feet about questioning the suspect, someone asked on HFJ if he and his PI could talk to the suspect and/or administer the polygraph on their own. He said they couldn't because the results wouldn't be admissible in court. I remember thinking to myself that he was dreaming if he thought this would ever go to trial. Building a court case needed to take a back seat to the goal of finding Jenny. But of course, JR could have ended up arrested or worse if he interfered in the so-called investigation. Rock meet hard place. I do feel for him.

If we are talking fantasy, then I would love to ask the resort for permission to view the surveillance tapes to see exactly what Jonathan was doing at the resort the entire 4 days while Jenny was missing.

Now that would definitely make me a happy camper since I truly believe that he was enjoying that resort while not even thinking about Jenny.

So get the popcorn ready while we shift through hours of surveillance footage while writing down all of his hinky actions on the resort grounds. Lol

Have at it (in your dreams) Dex. :D If his hotel or resort was anything like the ones mentioned in the article Tarabull just linked, they will claim there are no surveillance tapes and never were any. For all we know, JR was given bad alcohol or drugs and was a victim himself during those four or five days. Probably not, but anything is possible. Read the article, Dex. It will turn your stomach and give you another perspective, even if it doesn't change your suspicions. Trust me.

Agree totally LiliB. But he's been down there 6 times already. And I doubt he is searching hospitals or anything. So I guess we are just wondering what he does over there.

TODAY: http://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article168743807.html

The U.S. State Department has warned its citizens about traveling to Cancun and Los Cabos, two of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations, after a spike in violence in those regions.

A travel advisory issued Tuesday upgraded the warnings for two states, Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur, saying turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in shootings in which innocent bystanders have been killed.

<snip>

The travel warning is a major hit to Mexico's $20 billion-a-year tourism industry, of which the regions surrounding Cancun and Los Cabos are crown jewels. Mexican tourism authorities have gone to lengths to portray the beach resorts as family friendly and safe. Each year 10 million tourists visit Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is located.

But 10 years into the country's military-led drug war, violence is surging across the nation. This year, Mexico is on track to record more homicides than in any year in the last two decades.
Who in their right mind would travel to Mexico in today's world? I'm sure Jenny met up with unsavory characters, whomever they might be, and they know they will get away with murder and whatever else, even if they tell others about it. She's just one girl in a sea of murders, and no one anywhere except in Seattle and China is looking for her. IMO, No one down there cares about a Chinese girl who was essentially a transient in their country, attempting to travel across their land while taking advantage of the local people's kindness and generosity. Jenny preyed on their good character, then someone preyed on her, and if anyone knows what happened to her they probably think she had it coming. The mindset down there makes me think they have very little respect for human life, unless it's one of their own.

I do not think a sane, logical person would persist in raising awareness of their missing spouse if they had anything untoward to hide. I don't think JR harmed Jenny, but I do think he lacks a certain amount of tact, charisma and logic in the way he has handled her disappearance.

I agree with your entire post!

You couldn't drag me to Mexico now. And that's sad. But my hairdresser and a coworker are leaving Thursday for a conference for hairdressers in Cancun. They went last year and survived, so I hope they stay safe. Today I told her not to drink any alcohol unless it's bottled beer or something and to be extremely careful. I'm sure she will be but I'm concerned.
