I think for most people it would depend on the relationship they had with the 13 y.o., prior to the her stabbing her young sister 10 times with a large knife.

large knive(s). From what I read she started with the kitchen butchers knife, and then (probably not doing as much damage as she wanted) left and came back with a "hunting knife", which are stronger and better designed for stabbing and killing. JMO

Yes, the 7 year old seems to have been the cuddled one and jealousy may have been brewing.

True. I know from experience within my family that people can and often do miss red flags even when they are clearly showing, through denial or self-protection, etc.

Why would a parent leave something like that accessible for one thing? And, the older kid seemed to know about it, which is another whole problem! It's like people that leave firearms accessible, there is no reason for it!

kitchen tools live in the kitchen? mine never were under lock and key, even when my children were younger? Sure they were kept up and out of reach of littles but my teens had access to them. At 13 I and my children after me already knew how to prep and cook certain meals and use those kitchen tools.

as to the hunting knife with serrated edge, I'm sure that was probably put up somewhere out of reach of littles but probably also not under lock and key.

But they were STILL gone at that time, so this still tells us nothing about how long they were actually left alone for. I would like to know how long after the 911 call did the parents return home.

Was emergency vehicle still at the home when they got back? Had the victim already been taken away? Was the suspect still at the home, perhaps waiting with LE? Or did the parents return home to an empty house? Surely someone in LE would've been left there to await their arrival, if both daughters had already been removed. Or maybe LE was able to reach the parents by phone and let them know they needed to return immediately due to an emergency situation? If that happened, we will never know how long the girls would have potentially been left alone. Not that it mattered in the end. Under 2 hrs was too long this time.

Oh, ok, I knew that, but I got confused and was thinking of her stepfather as someone who lived somewhere else, and the parents who were out that day as her mother and father, so that changes my whole understanding, thank you.

So I can't imagine what she could possibly have said to stepdad to inform him she had just stabbed his daughter to death, but whatever it was, I assume he ordered her to call 911 and sped home, probably while also calling 911 himself on the way. Which could mean they all arrived near the same time. What a terrible day.

This is so tragic - and I know in this forum we see so many tragic things, but wow. The level of pain this family must be going through...

I am cautious to assign blame. I do remember being 13, I do remember being around kids who were 13. There were a few incidents at school, when friends my age would explode in anger, unprovocted. Hormones, puberty, lack of frontal lobe development. However, we did not have access to hunting knives. I am eager to see where this case will fall in the current debate of parental responsibility when juvenile perpetrators commit crimes with weapons their parents SHOULD NOT have allowed them access to.

This is a tragedy. My only hope is that it will spread awareness, enough that even one kid's life will be saved by parents who become alarmed and start locking up their weapons.

(The fact that the girl became aware enough to call 911... Just MOO but I imagine the 13 yo snapping out of her rage, and realising what she has done. The lives she destroyed, including her own. Tragic.)
