Over the top but more parents may be arrested now for being lax with guns. This just was on my news from Pittsburgh PA
Arrest warrant issued for parents of teen accused of shooting, killing sibling
Arrest warrant issued for parents of teen accused of shooting, killing sibling

4-year-old dies after accidentally shooting himself in Pittsburgh

Here's another case in the same state around the same time (late November 2021). I wonder if the grandparent will be charged in this case.

What it means to be found incompetent to stand trial:
  1. The defendant does not understand the nature and object of the proceedings against him or her. In order to meet this standard, the defendant cannot have even a minimal understanding of his or her role as a defendant, the role of the judge, the prosecutor, or the defense attorney, the penalties that he or she is facing as a result of being charged with a crime, or the criminal process. A defendant who does not understand the nature and the object of the proceedings against him or her is most typically someone with extremely low intelligence, or who is suffering from significant psychosis.

  2. The defendant is unable to assist in his or her defense in a rational manner. In order to meet this standard, the defendant is unable to do things like discuss with his or her attorney the facts of the case, rationally make decisions regarding things like plea offers or whether or not to testify on their own behalf at trial. A defendant who is unable to assist in his or her defense in a rational manner is likely suffering from severe psychotic symptoms. Right?! It’s beyond obvious to me that the additions and scratched out objects were done in a feeble attempt to make the drawings seem like no big deal. It's my understanding that his teacher took a picture of the original drawing with her iPhone and then he made the changes before his parents showed up. I just assumed the counselors and whoever else was included in the meeting with his parents had access to the original and the edited version. But maybe they didn’t think to compare the image on the iPhone with the physical drawing?

Depicted in Original Drawing
  • a gun (scratched out in revision)
  • the words “the thoughts won’t stop HELP ME” (HELP ME is scratched out in revision)
  • Laughing w/ Tears Emoji
  • the words “Blood Everywhere” (scratched out in revision)
  • Bullet
  • the words “My life is useless” (scratched out in revision)
  • the words “The world is dead” (scratched out in revision)
  • a man bleeding (scratched out in revision)

WORDS ADDED to Original Drawing

  • RMX 808
  • video game this is
  • harmless act
  • I love my life so much!!!!
  • we’re all friends here
  • OHS ROCKS!

This is evidence for the prosecution IMO.
This addition shows that he was thinking beyond what he had originally written. He is acknowledging that what he had written previously was deadly and could get him in trouble.
Incompetent -- he!! no. This is him speaking loudly -- "I am happy here at school and everything is good. "

Yup. Hard to read. HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING in the parent's faces.

1.) Only friend moved away

2.) His dog died

3.) He appeared sad and depressed

4.) Sending depressing texts to his mom

5.) Torturing animals

6.) Put bird's head in school bathroom

....... BOUGHT HIM A GUN TOOK HIM TARGET PRACTICING ......

...... IGNORED HIM ......

He was crying out for HELP.
I wished someone had paid attention to him.
He could have been a road to recovery not killing clasmates.

EC left the baby bird head in the school bathroom. In early November, there was a reported incident where someone tossed a deer head from the school’s roof and splashed red paint on some of its windows and the top of the building, according to The Associated Press.

School issued two memos saying the incident was “absolutely unrelated” to the shooting, but to my eye, there is an uncanny resemblance. Are there other disturbed students at Oxford?

I fear they are all related.
IMHO.

Thanks for that info, @woods -- Ethan is young, and probably not at the top of his class but IMO this would be due to the lack of concern of, and support by, his parents -- not due to any type of mental limitations. IMO, he doesn't qualify to be classified as mentally incompetent. As I posted earlier, he was in high school, he operated a computer at school, apparently did enuff to progress in school, he made plans, had a part-time job at one time, etc. Neglected, yes, but not incompetent under the description above.

Why didn't Ethan come with them and learn to ride and care for horses instead of buying him a gun?

According to the filing, it sounds like the parents just left him. They left him to take care of the horses, they left him to go drink... it's almost like they didn't want to take care of him at all. Sort of like how they said that he's on his own now as well.

Kind of off topic: There was a shooting at a college 30 mins from me last night. There was a high school basketball tournament there and someone opened fire in the lobby. Two juveniles hurt. There were so many people there. They don't have a suspect in custody.

Two juveniles hurt in shooting at Catawba College, officials say

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO END?!

IMO, if we don't have better gun laws, it will end when the world does. With a bang, not a whimper...

ps - Catawba College is about 120 miles from me. SMH.

Depressing. Horseback riding would have been a much healthier hobby for him.

Was the bird head with him that day, or was that another day? The article wasn't clear.

And @x_files I agree. Riding would have been a good therapy for this young man but I feel his mother was using it as therapy for having him instead of being a good parent.
