Clear backpacks... that's like a band-aid that's way too small.

Agreed. Clear backpacks are pretty much useless, feel-good optics. A handgun (or other small weapon) could easily be hidden among other items. Not to mention it's winter and weapons can be well-hidden in jackets, coats, boots.

I agree on the detectors AND I think that in this day and age with guns so available that I can't find a way around it. This school didn't think they had an issue. Humans make mistakes in judgment. From this perspective, clear backpacks and all of the other measures will not keep a gun out of a school if a bad actor wants to get one in. I hate to say it but it is true. IMHO.
This school didn’t *want* to think they had an issue. That kid could have been sitting in front of the principal with a T-shirt on that said “I’m going to shoot up the school after lunch” and it wouldn’t have changed the outcome. Maybe the principal would have asked him to turn it inside out before he went back to class after his parents “declined” to take him home.

That's so true. Metal detectors would "find" those weapons, and they would deter some students from carrying a metal weapon into the building. Not a cure-all, but it's a start...

Museums, libraries, stadiums - have metal detectors. Four of the grands are elementary school age and don’t hesitate or seem the least bit concerned to go through one.
I don’t think clear backpacks will be much of a deterrent.

Clear backpacks are definitely a deterrent for carrying your weapon in your backpack. However carrying it in your lunch bag, hollowed book and under the pant leg/clothes is AOK!

Our next step on the denial train...clear backpacks

I can imagine clear backpacks causing a lot of confusion for students unless they are kept with the owner at all times. Students can easily identify a backpack that they're familiar with just like we identify our luggage on the carousel at an airport. When everyone's backpack looks the same, there is bound to be confusion at times. JMO

Maybe the admins will add that the clear b-packs must have the student's initials or something... but what if there are duplicate initials? Probably should require padlocks with keys or numbers or, even better, voice recognition...

We frequently attend basketball games and we can only bring clear bags instead of large purses. We also must go through a metal detector. It's amazing that people still can sneak in small metal flasks to drink during the game. I see them all over the gym. Girls are allowed to bring small purses, which are not clear, but I assume that's because of monthly issues that girls deal with.

Clear backpacks required for some students after deadly Michigan school shooting (nbcnews.com)

Oxford Community Schools will have private security, therapy dogs, counselors and trauma specialists in all buildings, Superintendent Tim Throne said.

Some students in the Michigan school district where the deadly Oxford High School shooting took place will be required to carry clear backpacks starting Monday.

“We are doing clear backpacks for middle schools ... and high school students when they return,” Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Tim Throne said in a video message to parents.

The backpacks will be provided to students upon their return, according to the superintendent’s statement. Elementary school students won’t be required to use clear backpacks but their backpacks must be kept in their lockers or cubbies all day.

The school district has introduced a number of new security measures in the wake of the Nov. 30 shooting in the Detroit suburb that killed four students...

House launches safety task force after Oxford shooting. What it hopes to do (detroitnews.com)

A bipartisan task force in the Michigan House will study safety in schools and policy solutions they hope will help prevent further violence in the wake of the Nov. 30 Oxford High School shooting.

The eight-member task force will look at practical ways to improve safety protocols at schools as well as ways to assess and improve student mental health.

The committee hopes to have recommendations within the first few months of 2022.

"Outside of Oxford, I think everyone can see just the tremendous increase in demand for school mental health help," said Rep. Luke Meerman, R-Coopersville. "It was there before COVID, and just has been exacerbated by COVID."...

January 7, 2022, 9AM - Probable Cause Hearing for Ethan Crumbley:

It seems to be starting late because there is no Jail connection.

The Court recieved a written waiver of the prelimiary exam. The court is confirming that Ethan is waiving his right to the preliminary exam. He is automatically bound over to the Circuit Court.

Court confirmed that the prosecutor agreed to the waiver.

As it relates to bond: Will be addressed within 2 weeks before the Oakland County Circuit Court due to a newly enacted law.

This court loses jurisdiction and it goes to the Oakland County Circuit Court.

Does anyone know what the new federal law is regarding bail, and why the prosecution and defence attorneys need 2 weeks to review that law before they can have a bond hearing?

I don't know what it is yet, I can look it up later. But I think the 2 weeks also has to do with getting a hearing on calendar at the circuit court.

ETA: The circuit court couldn't schedule the hearing yet because they didn't have jurisdiction over the matter. Now that EC has been bonded over, they can set the hearing.
