"The courtroom is not a place for blowing kisses and sending secret signals," Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Williams said in a statement. "This is a time for families to pursue justice.”

The motion added that the communications "disparage the integrity of the judicial proceedings as a serious distraction" and are "traumatic for the family members of the deceased victims who are no longer able to express their love to the victims."

Relatives have asked why the Crumbleys are allowed to make the gestures during court proceedings, the motion says.

Lawyers for the couple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The motion says they have "indicated a willingness" to tell the Crumbleys to halt the gestures.

Lawyers for Oxford couple ask for delay in preliminary exam (detroitnews.com)

A preliminary exam for the parents of a teenager charged in the Nov. 30 Oxford High School shooting could be delayed next week due to legal issues being raised by attorneys over evidence, witnesses and "love you" objections.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, is charged with fatally shooting four fellow students and wounding seven other victims, including a teacher. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, have both been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter for buying him a handgun as a Christmas gift and later allegedly failing to properly secure the weapon or advising school officials of it during a meeting the morning of the shooting.

Defense attorneys said the prosecutor’s office has been slow in providing them with discovery — evidence that may be used at the exam — or to “realistically” narrow down a list of 30 potential witnesses...

The parents of Ethan Crumbley are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter for allegedly allowing their son access to a gun. Crumbley is accused of killing four students during a school shooting in Michigan in November 2021.

Prosecutors want his parents to stop acting all "lovey- dovey" in court after patriarch James Crumbley was seen mouthing "I love you" to his wife, Jennifer, at a court hearing last December following their dramatic arrest at a warehouse in Detroit where they were hiding out...

Oxford school officials deny negligence ahead of November mass shooting (detroitnews.com)

Oxford school officials have denied "they were negligent in any manner" in response to a lawsuit that accuses them of gross negligence and failing to prevent the deadly November Oxford High School shooting.

The defendants, including school Superintendent Timothy Throne and Oxford High Principal Steven Wolf, "were guided by and strictly observed all legal duties and obligations imposed by operation of law and otherwise," a Friday court filing from school attorney Timothy Mullins says. "Further, all actions of their agents, servants and/or employees were careful, prudent, proper and lawful."...

Officials at Oxford Community Schools file defenses in response to lawsuit

Oxford school officials are denying any negligence in the moments leading up to the deadly mass shooting last November, according to a new court filing.

Suspected shooter Ethan Crumbley, 15, a faces murder and 20 other felonies in the shooting at Oxford High School that killed four students and injured seven other people.

Disgusting knowing the facts

After EC was taken to the counselor's office, his parents did not show up for 1.5 HOURS. Why did it take them so long to arrive? Is it possible they first went home to see if EC's gun was gone? Is that why they never mentioned EC's gun at all when they did show up - they already knew he had it?

I feel like this may come out in either trial.

I have never heard of a situation like this happening in court. Unfortunately, it is not surprising given the way they seemingly ignored their son and his behavior for months!

Does anyone know if there is a precedence with respect to their behavior?

Closest I can think of is Tammy and Sidney Moorer, but I'm not sure even they were this bad.

Excerpt from article, linked below:

"...Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald opposes the delay and says in court documents the defense failed to address the rights of the victims, 4 students were killed, 7 others including a teacher injured, and countless others psychologically terrorized..."

How difficult it must be to prepare a defence for these people.

The virtual appearance world is new, but is there some reason they each should have to have the ability to see the other when appearing via zoom?

I don't know if when they are having a hearing for both defendants it's possible to turn off the ability to see just one camera for one person. Legally, each defendant has a right to see the prosecutor, their attorney and the judge.

Parents charged in Michigan school shooting face key hearing

The parents of a teenager who is accused of killing four students at a Michigan school face a key hearing to determine if they will face trial.

Attorneys for James and Jennifer Crumbley have asked a judge to consider a postponement so they can further prepare. But there was no decision ahead of the hearing Tuesday.

[...]

Their attorneys insist the Crumbleys didn’t know that a shooting was in the works and didn’t make the gun easy to find at home.

Judge Julie Nicholson must decide whether there's enough evidence to send the parents to the trial court in Oakland County.
