Pontiac — Despite all the news coverage and social-media speculation surrounding the involuntary manslaughter cases against the parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter, most legal experts argue James and Jennifer Crumbley can get an impartial jury and fair trial in Oakland County.

Attorneys and law experts familiar with the case of the Crumbley parents largely agree with Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews, who last month rejected defense arguments that the trial be moved out of the county. They say keeping the proceedings in Oakland County presents certain but not insurmountable challenges — despite the nature of the Nov. 30 rampage in which four students were slain, and six others and a teacher were wounded...

Pontiac – An Oakland Circuit judge ordered the attorney for the Oxford School District Wednesday to comply with a request for depositions in a civil lawsuit stemming from the Nov. 30 high school shooting in which four students died and seven others were wounded.

Judge Rae Lee Chabot had previously ordered attorneys into mediation on the issues but after they reported being unable to resolve matters, she told attorneys they have 60 days to comply with depositions from six school employees: Pam Parker Fine, Shawn Hopkins, Nicholas Ejak, Jacquelyn Kubina, Becky Morgan and Allison Karpinski.

Failure to comply would put the school district’s attorney at risk of being in contempt of her initial court order of June 23 that attorneys for families of victims were entitled to ask them questions outside of court...

Thanks for posting, grabbed this out of this article: Judge again orders accused Oxford shooter to remain at Oakland County Jail

During the monthly review hearing in June, the judge pushed Crumbley’s trial date back to January 17, 2023. It was originally, but tentatively, scheduled for Sept. 6.

The U.S. Department of Education awarded more than $700,000 in emergency funds Friday to the Oxford Area Community School District in response to the mass shooting in November at Oxford High School.

The $707,600 was disbursed as part of the federal department's School Emergency Response to Violence project. Funding for the project is authorized through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, with more than $3.7 million being awarded this year.

The money will go toward improving school safety in the district as well as ensuring the well-being of students, staff and families at the high school...

An 18-year-old survivor of the Oxford High School shooting in Michigan on Tuesday wowed the crowd with a moving performance on “America’s Got Talent,” earning her a standing ovation from all four judges.

Ava Swiss, a senior at the school, belted “Remember” by Lauren Daigle, a song that she said helps her cope in the wake of the November 2021 shooting in suburban Detroit.

Before performing, Swiss opened up about her song choice...

An Oxford teen who survived last fall's mass shooting at Oxford High School that took the lives of four of her classmates is moving on to the next round of NBC's hit talent show, "America's Got Talent," and sharing her story along the way.

Ava Swiss, who was a senior at the high school last school year, wowed the judges Tuesday with her performance of Christian singer Lauren Daigle's "Remember," a song she said she chose because of the shooting. The audience gave her a standing ovation and all four judges voted to move her to the next round...

...“This is huge,” said Johnson. “The public should be outraged that the government has established super-secret rules protecting themselves which are not provided to ordinary citizens.

“I’m sure the school’s attorney will argue that they should not be a defendant in this case, but this will enable us to explore the issue,’ Johnson said.

Timothy Mullins, the attorney representing six Oxford school defendants named in the complaint, said Wednesday he filed legal briefs months ago that government immunity protection was appropriate, but is prepared to argue the matter further if necessary.

“There have been about 25 people or more that have tried to stop governmental immunity and failed,” Mullins said. “I suspect that will be case here. It's up to the judge of course, but it's possible we may have oral arguments on this sometime in October.”...

Detroit — An armed Oxford High School security guard failed to stop a mass shooting that killed four students and injured seven others, thinking the attack was a drill and that one student was wearing “really good makeup" as he bled to death, a victim's lawyer argued Wednesday.

Attorney Ven Johnson leveled the allegation against the security guard after viewing school surveillance video and moved to amend a civil lawsuit to name the retired Oakland County sheriff's deputy as a defendant. Speaking during a news conference attended by victims of the Nov. 30 shooting, Johnson and parents of victims criticized school officials for a lack of transparency in the nine months since police say Oxford student Ethan Crumbley waged the attack.

The security guard failed to activate her body camera that could have captured details of the attack and school surveillance footage shows her walking in the hallway and opening a bathroom door but not entering more than one minute before authorities say Crumbley fatally shot 17-year-old student Justin Shilling...

New claims about Oxford High School’s security guard and their lack of action on the day of the school’s shooting have come to light.

The attorney representing several families asked to add a security guard to an already filled lawsuit.

“She was armed. She had a gun. She had a body camera. Just what you’d expect from a security person, and I know that none of you have heard anything about her,” said Attorney Ven Johnson.

Johnson stated that the security guard thought the school shooting was an active shooter drill. He claims that there is video footage showing the guard walking down the hallway and finding the body of Tate Myre.

The attorney said that the security guard told investigators that when she saw Myre, she thought they were using good makeup for the ALICE drill...

...On Tuesday (Aug. 2) night, we learned she’s moving on to the next round of the competition.

The next round of competition will be the live shows which begin on Aug. 9 right here on Local 4. So the next time you see Swiss compete, everybody at home will have the opportunity to vote...

Potts then allegedly entered a bathroom where two victims were hiding

But before Crumbely allegedly shot Justin Shilling, 16, to death in the bathroom and Keegan Gregory, 15, ran out for help, Potts had already closed the door and turned down the hallway.

"She had her gun in her hand, so she knew. She told investigators that she didn't even look in the bathroom — didn't know why she opened the door, really," Johnson alleged.

Thought it was GOOD MAKEUP? Really? SMH - just no words.........
I have no words and I'm sick of reading the lack of response from the very people put in our schools to protect the children. It was also stated that she had a body cam on her but NEVER TURNED IT ON. Now, even IF she thought this was a drill shouldn't she have turned that body cam on - as part of her training?

So glad I no longer have children in our public schools.

JMHO

TOTAL NONSENSE, makes me angry to read this and they expect the public to buy it?
That's pathetic to even throw out to the public, how about she was in shock or panicked. Anything other than she thought it was an ALICE DRILL. ALICE...

ALICE stands for alert, Well she, this guard, thinks they alerted who???, everybody except her? an armed guard who could/may have ended this quickly. Good make up on a dead teen???

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. The whole point of the body cam is to see what they did right and what they can improve upon.

Situation stinks, this is such a farce.

Did the security guard immediately go into denial, wanting it to be a drill, and ignoring her training, policies, and common sense about what happens during a shooting versus a drill, because otherwise, it would be "real?"
Do they teach security and law enforcement officers about the human tendency to freeze and go into denial in emergencies, and how to push through that?
This is why not everyone is cut out for security/LE positions (myself included).
JMO.

Why should we be surprised? The information about response is trickling out of the situation in a very, very, very slow way. The families of those killed, the survivors and bystanders deserve way better. Once again, the truth won't come out in a fair and unbiased way, it will have to be leakers or lawyers who sue to get access. IMHO!

The Oxford Board of Education and Oxford High School administration and staff have been in CYA mode since Day 1. They will never take responsibility for their inept handling of this situation. JMO

...“I’m so happy that I have another opportunity to just share my story and to hopefully touch others, and heal others with my voice,” Swiss said.

Swiss is a graduate of Oxford High School. On Nov. 30, 2021, a gunman opened fire inside the high school injuring seven people and killing four students. Swiss said she is grateful for the community’s support.

“There’s nothing like our town, Oxford. The amount of love and support and everything, it’s overwhelming in the best way possible,” Swiss said...
