'On Wednesday, the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office filed open murder and tampering with evidence charges against Jared Chance.

Last month, the 29-year-old was charged with mutilation of a body and concealing the death of an individual after a search of his apartment allegedly turned up additional body parts and other evidence, including items police say could have been used to dismember a corpse. '

Docs: Evidence of cover-up found at Jared Chance’s parents home

According to court documents filed Thursday, the parents of accused murderer Jared Chance were far more involved in the death of Ashley Young than previously known.

[...]

Investigators outline in the document that they eventually came to find out that on December 1 Jared Chance was picked up by his parents, James and Barbara, along with his brother. They say that boxes from Chance's apartment were loaded into his parent's Honda before driving out to the parents' home in Holland. The family also stopped at Ashley Young's abandoned vehicle to retrieve a box inside before leaving Grand Rapids.

Investigators subsequently got a search warrant for the parents' home, where they found a saw under a living room couch. Traces of human blood and tissue were later positively identified on the saw blade as well as inside the parents' car.

Judge denies bond as Jared Chance is formally charged with murder of Ashley Young

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Kent County judge denied bond Friday for Jared Chance, the 29-year-old Grand Rapids man now charged with murder and mutilation of a body after 31-year-old Ashley Young was found dead in his home.

Chance's attorney, Andrew Rodenhouse, said after Friday's court appearance that he and his client had been anticipating the murder charges for "quite some time."

Prosecutors charged Chance with open murder, which Rodenhouse said could be anything from something negligent to something intentional.

Rodenhouse later said his client plead not guilty to all charges.

Some tension was visible in court Friday between members of Ashley Young's family and a woman Chance's defense attorney, Andrew Rodenhouse, confirms used to be in a relationship with Chance.

Kristine Young, Ashley's mother, stared Chance's ex down after the woman said something to the group in court before the hearing.

Wednesday, Dec. 12th:
*Arraignment Hearing for both (@ ET) – MI – Ashley Young (31) (last seen Nov. 29, 2018, Kalamazoo, found Dec. 2, 2018) - *Barbra Chance () & James Chance () (Jared’s parents) charged (12/10/18) with accessory after the fact of a felony & perjury.
*Jared James Chance (29) arrested (12/2/18), charged (12/4/18) & arraigned (12/5/18) with 1 count of mutilating, defacing, removing or carrying away a portion of a body & of discovery of body & failing to inform proper authorities. $750K Bond.

Is it possible that his parents didn't cover up for his acts? That perhaps Chance used their car without them knowing it when he visited them that day? Or he hid the saw under the parents' couch without them knowing it was there? I know that those are the only two pieces of info we have about them being accessories after the fact, so I am just wondering thoughts on the viability of them helping him.

As for the perjury, his dad says in court about the charges, "I'm not guilty of them" and states on camera as they are entering their ride after bonding out, that he did turn him in. And she (or someone else in the car) shouts out we did call them.

Father of slaying, mutilation suspect tried to help son avoid arrest, prosecutor says

GRAND RAPIDS, MI –James Chance, a retired Illinois police sergeant, tried to help his son avoid arrest in the death and dismemberment of a Kalamazoo woman by lying to investigators and moving boxes that police suspect contained the victim’s body parts, a prosecutor said Thursday, Jan. 10.

Assistant Kent County Prosecutor Lawrence Boivin told a judge that James Chance, 76, intended to help Jared Chance continue to destroy evidence – primarily, the victim’s body – before police could find what was left, a torso.
