Mother of Anthony Bennett, man charged with assault of Carnel Chamberlain, tells of son's troubled life: Top stories from Tuesday

http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2012/07/mother_of_anthony_bennett_man.html

I don't understand why her four children were taken away if AB lashed out. Doesn't make sense and she is not revealing all the info about this. AB's dad was involved in his life as I can tell from the article.
Her four children were taken away by Child Protective Services after Bennett lashed out, causing an investigation eight years ago, Gutierrez said.
“Anthony’s dad (Tim Bennett) was making chicken breast patties, and Anthony asked if he could have one,” she said.
When Bennett’s sister, Diamintina Shaffer, took the patty instead, Bennett grabbed his butterfly knife and stabbed her in the arm.

Child Protective Services workers took her four children, Diamintina Shaffer, now 21, Anthony Bennett, now 20, and their younger brother and sister.

Interesting, but I will take with a grain of salt:

“He said he had no idea what happened,” Gutierrez said. “He told me he saw a strange vehicle in the area.”
She criticized Bennett and Jaimee Chamberlain for their attitudes during the search for Carnel on Saturday, June 23.
“I didn’t see no emotion (from Jaimee),” she said. “She was laughing and hanging out with her friends, or family? They weren’t searching for the child.”
“Anthony too, he never searched,” Gutierrez said.

Maybe CPS was worried that she would continue to let Bennett in the house and the children would continue to get abused, or worse. IMO the mother couldn't control Bennett. She could have done a lot more than what she did. She could have gotten a court order having Bennett committed to a mental institution. She admits he was mentally ill. Had she done that little Carnel might still be alive. This poor little baby left alone with such a sick guy.

the whole sad tale of how this woman lost her children and became estranged from them is extremely self serving and no doubt highly inaccuracy.

Gutierrez said her children faced abuse, though she said it was not at her hands.

I have no doubt AB was neglected and/or abused as a child. But looking at him in the present, right now today, he is despicable. But if his story were told here at Websleuths, regarding what he experienced as a child. Would we have compassion for him? It sounds like his Mother failed to protect him too, IMO. I guess what I am trying to say; this underscores the importance of our parental duty to protect.

We have Anthony Bennett's mother saying her kids were removed. We have Carnel's great-aunt's statement and we have Jaimee's, documented further up thread, issues with custody when she was younger. LOTS of child abuse, and children removed from homes, in the scenario. I still wonder why Jaimee was removed from her mother's care at 8.

Carnel's great-aunt, Esther Chatfield, 58, lives next door to the home. She said she and her husband became Jaimee Chamberlain's foster parents when Chamberlain was 8 years old.

Here's an older link with a long article that details AB's troubled upbringing. It's sad. I think some turn out the way they do due to their environment, and some are destined for something different no matter what, and there are those that are a horrible combination of both. :moo:

Bennett’s childhood is steeped with trauma, including unsuccessful efforts to unify his family in 2006, according to Isabella County Trial Court records.

Bennett’s mother took parenting classes but did not gain skills, according to court records.

Bennett’s father failed twice to show up for scheduled psychological evaluations and showed “little interest” in his children, according to court records.

Here are the growing statistics for reported child abuse in this country every year. This is alarming and so sad. AB was a violent and disturbed child, who didn't receive the help he needed. He is a big boy now all grown up and he knows right from wrong. I feel a lot more sorrow for Carnel than I'll ever feel for AB. I just hope there is an arrest soon for the murder of Carnel.

When is AB's next court appearance?

I can't believe that this guy was smart enough not to leave any evidence at all. The FBI seems to be staying really tight lipped about this case. I think they're going to get Jamiee to testify against Bennett since she has sovereign immunity anyway. I would hate to see this guy only get a child abuse charge, when there is a dead child involved.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "she has sovereign immunity anyway". I know what sovereign immunity is, but I'm not sure why you think Jamiee would have it or what it has to do with her testifying.

TIA

I was wondering the same thing.

Tribal sovereign immunity protects the tribe and it's resources, not an individual. The tribe can't be sued, unless they agree to be.

Hi legalmania

I'm not sure about the legal aspects of your post. But I agree that AB would not be sophisticated enough to eliminate all traces of evidence. Looking forward to his Monday appearance, hoping we will hear more details.

One of the hardest things here at WS, is the waiting. Good discussion always helps to pass the time between appearances. Or as in this case, while we are waiting for charges to be brought.

Thanks for chiming in here.

Michigan is not a PL 280 state so that has no application here. Even if you were to stretch it and say Jaimee is a tribal employee because she works at the casino, that does not apply to Anthony Bennett's case. IMHO

According to this Jamiee is Native American and was living on the reservation. She admits to seeing little Carnel being abused at least 3 times by Bennett and Failure to report is a crime. I'm sure she will testify against him. Was she involved in the body being disposed of I'm not sure only time will tell. Ive been busy with a lawsuit and just found out about this case. It won't link up to the site. The FBI is closing down a lot of info about this family. Like I said they are being really tight lipped.

Sorry I didn't see your post Hi. I'm multitasking right now so forgive me if I don't get back sometimes. Ya I just got word of this case a couple of days ago. Somebody has shut down all their facebook sites, so it's making it really hard to find information about this family. Jamiees brother said he shaved the babies head. That they are Native American and white. I don't know why he felt he had to say white. Which would make them European Native American. Well enough with the history lesson. I'm sure we will talk more but I have to walk the dogs and finish a brief by Monday. So like I said if I don't get back it's just because I'm busy. Take care.

Well, that's interesting! ... And closing down the facebook accounts! I'm going to go look at the FB's I have saved.

Well, that's interesting!

They can't do anything until they have forensics, otherwise it is an assault case. Just hope they don't plead it out.

We still don't know, haven't heard anything about Federal 3 Strikes Law pertaining to him.

There are no DOJ postings/releases about him, nor are there US District Attorney's Office, District of Eastern Michigan listings for him.
