MI - Neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover, 53, found fatally shot during welfare check, Detroit, Apr 2023

I was disappointed when I read this POI was released. I was hoping this person was the suspect and would be charged. oh well. I hope the police have leads on this very sad and tragic case.
As far as the timeline goes, I was too, but if this person was not responsible for this, they need to be let go.

I find it quite interesting that people like Dr. Hoover, who are considered low risk for violent crime, often have the hardest time when it comes to finding the perp(s), if it isn't obvious from the get-go.

A few years ago a Minneapolis area doctor was shot and killed just outside his home. It later turned out to be the son of one of his patients. The patient died and the son blamed the doctor for her death.
I thought of it because I once worked at a specialist medical practice and they were all super careful with privacy and security because of the chance a patient or former patient could track them down.

I've read many local reports on this case and never saw any indication that the POI was a suspect in the murder of Dr. Hoover. Most media reports seemed to suggest that "the POI might have information about what happened". Evidently, that didn't pan out, so the POI was released.

I'm so relieved to hear that the POI is still a POI and some new facts in Dr. Hoover's murder.

New clues emerge in murder of well-known Detroit neurosurgeon’s murder

Person of interest is still a focus of the investigation

DETROIT – Local 4 continues to dig and ask questions about the murder of Dr. Devon Hoover, the neurosurgeon who was found fatally shot in a crawl space in the attic of his home in Detroit’s Historic Boston Edison District.

A person of interest was released on Tuesday (May 2), and that’s coming as Local 4 learned new clues in the case.

A family member in Indiana called Detroit police concerned after Hoover did not arrive to visit his ailing mother on Sunday (April 23).

The victim was not shot in the attic crawl space. He was moved there by the shooter. Police therefore assume it was a man (strength).

Regarding the "attic crawlspace" I'm picturing one that you enter through a small door under stairs or a garage overhang.

I spotted several interesting things at Dr. Hoover's mansion when doing a walkabout on GoogleMaps.
I too had done a GoogleMaps walkabout there beginning down the blvd past the front of the house, down the side street and stopped immediately. Wondering about that. I continued on and came to the street behind and couldn't help but wonder about the taller buildings there and if people coming and going from there might have noticed something. Seeing many vehicles parked in that vicinity also.

Has anyone seen mention of existing security cameras or CCTV footage? I haven't. That's an upscale neighborhood with gorgeous homes, I'd assume the residents would have invested in security systems and cameras.
Good point and you would think there would be CCTV footage---- I really hope they solve this case sooner than later

Investigators say they don’t believe Hoover was shot in the attic crawl space,< > carried there after the shooting. Police believe the person responsible is a man who knows Hoover. < >

Investigators say that person is still a main focus of their investigation, < > Police continue to investigate the shooting of the well-known doctor, as well as a break-in that occurred at the same home just before Hoover’s funeral.

How did police know to conduct welfare check at home of killed Detroit neurosurgeon?

I find it curious that it is reported that Hoover was wrapped in a plastic sheet and then we hear he was wrapped in a blanket. And that he was moved to the attic crawlspace by one person presumably the "man" who murdered him.

Still wondering where the car -- what make/model of car -- was left. Maybe there was video footage of someone driving and/or leaving the car in some "eerie location." Wondering what is an "eerie" location? Could there be DNA from the car or plastic sheet or blanket?

And with the release of the "person of interest" it was reported that there was a "shocking development" after the release. All these little nuggets of information are like pieces of a puzzle.

Oh, and does somebody wonder why the police came to his house for a welfare check? He was supposed to be at a family event over the weekend and when he failed to show up, the family member called police.

Dr. Hoover's family members in Indiana called LE requesting a welfare check, as Dr. H didn't show up over the weekend to visit his mother who was in the last days of her life due to cancer. They must have known something was wrong when he didn't show up to visit his dying mother. She passed away four days after DH's murder.

With regard to the MSM reporting on both "plastic sheet" or a "blanket" used to cover DH, it could just be reporting error, or maybe he was wrapped in both. LE believe it likely to be a male suspect due to the strength that would be needed to place DH's body in the attic.

Early on it was posted here that LE stated that DH's car (someone speculated that it may have been a Bentley) was found abandoned on the West side of town. I haven't seen the reporting that calls the area "eerie," but if you have, please feel free to provide the link in MSM to that description. I wonder if the suspect was trying to throw LE off his trail and moving the vehicle to an area of town where there is more crime and/or breakins and car thefts. I don't know the city of Detroit well enough to know if that might be the case.

Like you, I hope LE is able to find DNA in the car or house, and that the case moves forward soon.

By the way, welcome to Websleuths!

Well, I went back to the article I read where I distinctly saw "eerie location!" I don't know, but I do see the article is "updated" and I didn't see "eerie location" ... this is very interesting, you know??

Thanks for the welcome ... appreciate it.

BTW, just something else that I found curious ... Dr. Devon Hoover was very meticulous and precise with his gardening and probably everything else. I noticed on the photo that was initially being used to show the front of his house and beautifully maintained front yard and hedges, that there was something amiss ... something lying on the sidewalk in front. Curiously, somebody else must have noticed that and a different photo of the front that looked after rain or irrigation has been used.

Tell me, what is that lying there?

Glove, slipper, Covid mask.

Wow.

I'm requesting a link to the very interesting photo you're discussing, please. TIA
JIC, you're unaware, for future purposes, as a general rule at WS, when a screen capture is posted, a link is always required unless the link has been provided on numerous occasions. This case has so few links that they've not been posted copiously.

Dr. Hoover owned a vintage Bentley. I rather doubt the killer stole and abandoned the good doctor's antique Bentley but rather, they absconded with a newer model vehicle typically used by DH traveling to work, etc.
