Brandon teenage girl Carly Madison Gregg, accused of murdering her mother and attempting to kill her stepfather at the family's home in March, rejected the prosecutor's plea deal of 40 years on Tuesday. Gregg could now face up to two life sentences.

The Tuesday court hearing began with Gregg, 15, who was dressed in a navy-blue plaid schoolgirl uniform, standing before Circuit Court Judge Dewey Arthur inside the Rankin County Courthouse.

Hmmm, I wonder if they think she'll do better, as far as sentencing goes, if she has a jury trial.

Was she that angry before she started taking the anti-depressants?

Sorry long post but this is a tragedy.

This 14 year old child was apparently taking a powerful antidepressant medication ESCITALOPRAM, which is not recommended for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in children under 12 years.

In my view, the body & brain of a 14 year old is really not much different from that of a 12 year old. Every person is different.

I hope this medication had been prescribed after careful assessment by a psychiatrist experienced in adolescent mental health.

It is known to be associated with increased suicidal ideation, increased aggression/anger/violence and acting on aggressive impulses, particularly when medication is started or the dosage changed.

If you want to see the evidence of please read on. I am a retired medical practitioner and my opinion is backed up with relevant links below. I’ve picked out the points that I feel may be pertinent to this case.

1) From the above article

“ Cotton said investigators learned Carly had been on prescription medications, including Lexapro, leading up to the murder. He added Carley allegedly changed the medication she was taking about a week before the shootings”

2) Next is this

“ Increased risk of suicidal thoughts or actions. Lexapro and other antidepressant medicines increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in people 24 years of age and younger, especially within the first few months of treatment or when the dose is changed.”

“ Call your healthcare provider right away to report new or sudden changes in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings or if you or your child develop suicidal thoughts or actions.

  • attempts to commit suicide
  • acting aggressive, being angry or violent
  • acting on dangerous impulses
  • other unusual changes in behavior or mood”

It is not known if Lexapro is safe and effective for use in children under 12 years of age with MDD ( Major Depressive Order)

3) Next this

Choosing a medication for an adolescent is a complex decision.

MOO
I don’t like the medication information I’m seeing. It makes me feel it caused her to act out by breaking down her ability to restrain herself. I can’t help feeling that the medication played a role and was a big factor in the commission of the crime. She is after all a child.

Carly Gregg, 14, is accused of murdering her mother, Ashley Smylie, by shooting her three times and wounding her stepfather last March. Security cameras at the home in Rankin County, Mississippi recorded parts of the incident. Law&Crime's Angenette Levy @angnette5 reports.

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - A Rankin County teenager accused of killing her mother and shooting her stepfather is likely changing her defense to insanity.

A jury trial has been set for September 16.

I wonder if CG's legal team will continue to present her in the little-school-girl modest attire throughout trial? While I fully understand why defense attorneys often have their clients dress and modify hair styles, etc. to portray a more "innocent" look... I really, really don't like it. jmo

I thought this was the way she normally looked. Guess that was the goal….

At 15 yrs she is however, only a child.

She's a child.
But school shooters this age are being charged "as adults."

I wonder why she was prescribed Escitalopram, why there was a medication change a week prior -although some preteens and teens really need medications -- and most of all, how she was able to access a gun while undergoing mental health treatment?

If I were on the jury, there are so many factors I'd want to know. Besides the above -- what could a motive have been? What did she say during questioning afterwards? What did she say to other relatives afterwards, if she spoke to any? What else did she tell the friend she invited over?
