Psychiatric test sought for Brad Cooper

CARY - Attorneys for Nancy Cooper's family want a judge to order the slain woman's husband to be evaluated by a psychiatrist.

.......................snip......................

Before then, Nancy Cooper's family wants a judge to order that Bradley Cooper be evaluated by a therapist and that those records be considered in the custody case. They have asked that a hearing be set for September 22.

A month after former Edmonton-area woman Nancy Cooper was murdered in North Carolina police say they are making "good progress" in identifying her killer. Carey Police Chief Pat Bazemore says: "I want to express my absolute confidence that we will solve this terrible crime and bring the person or persons responsible to justice". Investigators may be waiting for the result of DNA analysis that could point them at a killer. Meanwhile, Nancy Cooper's family here in the Edmonton area has re-applied to have her husband Brad forced to undergo a psychological assessment. A hearing on the new application will be held on September 22nd...weeks before a custody hearing resumes for Cooper's two daughters Bella and Katie.

Monday will be the day of the next major development in the now-month-old death of Nancy Cooper.

There are still no suspects in the murder of the former Edmontonian, near her home in North Carolina.

But on Monday, information police have gathered through warrants will have to be released... that is, unless the state can convince a judge to keep it sealed. The district attorney handling the case had said releasing the information would hurt the police investigation.

It's the reason a judge sided with the state, when two media outlets in North Carolina argued last month that the information be unsealed.

State law forces police to indicate a theory, before warrants are issued. They have so far, searched the home of Nancy and husband Brad Cooper, their vehicles, as well as his work.

They've also had Brad Cooper submit a DNA test.

Judge rules to not unseal Cooper warrants

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Monday a judge determined details in the Nancy Cooper murder case will not be revealed.

The 34-year-old mother of two was found murdered near her Cary home last month.
The searches in question could reveal what investigators found while searching Nancy and Brad Cooper's home and cars. The warrants also contain information on the submission of Brad's DNA and the search of his Cisco Systems officer in Research Triangle Park.

The article says, "The Nancy Cooper search warrants will remain sealed until September 2 at 1 p.m."

BTW, the next scheduled Grand Jury assemblage in which CPD could present this case is 8/25/08.

Cooper warrants sealed till Sept. 2

.............snip.....................
Lawyers for The News & Observer and WRAL-TV appealed to Stephens last month and again on Monday to make the records available. The records detail why police wanted to search the home Nancy Cooper shared with her husband, Bradley Cooper; their cars; and Bradley Cooper's office at Research Triangle Park. Police have collected blood or saliva to help capture a DNA profile from Bradley Cooper; they have also searched another location they have not disclosed. The search warrants would also contain a list of the items they seized.

Amanda Martin, a Raleigh attorney representing the media, urged the court to show what was peculiar about this case to require such secrecy. "This is happening without any specific articulation as to why this case is different," Martin said.

Heavenly Birthday Wishes
By Amanda Lamb

Posted: Aug. 26 9:01 p.m.

Most of us don't think of our friends and families celebrating our birthdays after we are dead. That's because birthdays represent living one more year, making it to another milestone. Long after we pass the age of decorated cakes, party games and goodie bags, birthdays become a time of reflection, a time to take stock of how far we have come and what we have left to do.

Nancy Cooper would have turned thirty-five next week. She will never get a chance to reflect and muse about what she has accomplished-bringing two beautiful daughters into the world. She will never get a chance to ponder her future or dreams. Maybe she would have moved back to her native Canada, started a new career? We'll never know.

Nancy Cooper was found murdered not far from her Cary home on July 14.
