Press Conference - November 9, 2018

Notes from last minute presser 11/9/18 3:30 PM (EST)

Police Chief Michael McNeill…
  • Breaks his heart that he has to stand there 5 days later to know Hania is still not back home to her mother, and to the community.
  • They are working hard to bring her home to her family.
  • In addition to the $15,000 reward being offered by the FBI, their governor office today reported they are giving an additional $5,000 reward to help find Hania.
  • Today the NC Emergency Management office conducted a ground search within a mile of where the stolen vehicle was found in the area of Quincey Dr.
  • The groups are specially trained to search for evidence that could help them to find HNA.
  • They checked all the abandoned buildings in the area that they could check.
  • They are now asking anyone who owns property within a mile of Quincey Dr to check their own property; check the out-sheds, outbuildings.
  • Call tip-line at 910-272-5871 if anyone sees anything unusual or out of place on their property.
  • They processed the SUV and are hoping it offers clues to bring Hania back home.
FBI Supervisory Senior Resident Agent Andy de la Rocha...
  • It’s been 24 hours since they’ve released the video of the man walking, and they still don’t have him identified.
  • Maybe someone recognizes the way he walks, his mannerisms, or maybe he will recognize himself on tv.
  • Described the video again.
  • From Hania’s mom, a message: You provided help. You can continue to provide help. We need your help. We need Hania to come home. You saw this man. You were in the cars. You know who he is. You know where he was coming from. Please come forward with information. We just want Hania home.
FBI Special Agent Liza Vita
  • Provided remarks in Spanish
Some Q&A notes (answered by FBI Supervisor Andy)…
  • The reward from the FBI is $15,000, the reward from the Governor’s office is $5,000
  • No number to put on how many volunteers, but safe to say there are “hundreds.”
  • Not willing to comment at this point on how long the SUV was there before they found it.
  • They have hundreds of leads that are coming in, and they are all being addressed individually.
  • They are asking folks on SM not to spread rumors, accusations, innuendos. Stick with the facts. They are sharing as much as they possible can with the public. Every time a false lead comes in, it drains the precious resources away from the logical leads. They don’t need the spread of rumors and false reports.
  • They are not going to comment on anything they may have found inside the SUV. It is an ongoing investigation, and they are processing.
  • “The person responsible, if they are watching this: we’re coming after you. We’re not going to stop. […]”
FBI Spokesperson Shelley Lynch…
  • They are working on updating the FBI poster. They are adding a photo, which was taken on Sunday, the day before she was kidnapped (previously posted on FBI Charlotte on Twitter).
  • Provided remarks regarding social media rumors.
  • How can you help? Tell them who the man is in the video.

Lumberton Police Department | 11/10/2018 3:37pm (EST)

The Lumberton Police Department and the FBI ask for continued assistance to locate 13-year-old Hania Noelia Aguilar.

Saturday, Investigators will continue to canvass the area near where the stolen SUV was found Thursday morning. We want to talk to everyone who lives nearby to see if they saw anything to help us #FindHania. We ask if home owners or business owners have surveillance video and we have not already contacted to you to call the tip line at 910-272-5871. We are trying to determine exactly how and when the SUV made it to the field on Quincey Drive where it was found. Chief Michael McNeill urged everyone who lives nearby to check their own property, "Go take a look around your property and inside sheds or outbuildings. You know your property best. Call our tip line immediately if you see anything unusual or out of place." Specially trained searchers with the North Carolina Emergency Management Office are back out in the area Saturday to search areas that are not private property.

We also still need to identify a person seen walking on surveillance video near the kidnapping scene. Three separate videos show a man wearing light colored shoes, a light-colored shirt, and a hoodie walking down Lambeth Street, then turning left onto Highway 41/Elizabethtown Road towards the Rosewood Mobile Home Park.

"Someone knows this man and we need you to call us. Maybe you recognize the way he walks, his mannerisms, or maybe he will recognize himself on TV. The public was critical in the recovery of the SUV, now we need you to come through again for us. Who is the man on the video?", said Andy Delarocha, FBI Supervisory Resident Agent. Several vehicles were seen on the video driving by the man walking. please contact our tip line at 910-272-5871 with any information. If you are this individual, please call the tip line and speak with investigators, your assistance may help in locating Hania.

Hania was outside her home at the Rosewood Mobile Home Park located at 3525 Elizabethtown Road, Lumberton, North Carolina on November 5, 2018 just before 7:00 a.m. She had gone outside just before her family left to drive to school. A witness heard her scream, looked outside, and saw a male subject dressed in all black and wearing a yellow bandana force Hania into a relative's vehicle that was parked in the driveway. Hania is a Hispanic female, 5 feet tall, weighing approximately 126 pounds. She has black hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt with flowers and blue jeans. Hania's family is working with law enforcement and fully cooperating with investigators to locate Hania.

The Lumberton Police Department has set up a special tip line to call if you have information to help investigators find Hania at 910-272-5871. Missing posters are available in English and Spanish on www.fbi.gov

He may have information to help us #Find Hania. We also need to hear from anyone with surveillance video who we have not already been in contact with to receive copies of your videos. We are working to build an exact timeline of when and how the stolen SUV ended up abandoned on Quincey Drive in Lumberton on Thursday.

"Hania is a teenager, calm, she is humble. A happy teenager," Father GR said of the 13-year-old.

Aguilar is a member of the confirmation class at St. Andrews and her absence from Wednesday's weekly mass was tough on the other children.

"Most of the girls her age were really affected. When we came to mass, they have two hours of class and then we come to mass, so whenever they come into mass, everybody was just talking about it," GR said. "It was really tough because some of the children, they just had to leave."

Police seek man in video | Robesonian
A North Carolina Highway Patrol helicopter has entered the search for a 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped Monday as she waited to be driven to school.

The helicopter, also equipped to conduct searches at night, will be concentrating on the area around where the SUV used in Hania Noelia Aguilar’s kidnapping was found, C. Andrew de la Rocha, a FBI supervisory senior resident agent, said Thursday during a news conference.

“Someone called 911 and said they saw the vehicle backed up in the woods,” Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill said. That prompted a search of the area.

The search was organized by North Carolina Emergency Management, according to Shelley Lynch, a FBI spokesperson. The searchers all were professionals, but Lynch did not know how many personnel were involved. Agents are going door to door speaking with residents and business owners in the area.

“Our search for Hania continues every second and now becomes more dire,” McNeill said.

"Someone may recognize something about the way this person walks or their mannerisms or clothing," said FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch. "Also, we saw in that video that many people drove by the person as he was walking. He may recognize himself."

As hundreds of people are actively searching for the missing teen, members of the state's Emergency Management Division conducted grid searches where the vehicle was discovered.

Authorities said they are not giving up until Hania is located and the person who took her is found.

Community leans on faith as search continues for Lumberton teen Hania Aguilar
RED SPRINGS, N.C. (WNCN) - Hania Aguilar’s family and friends are leaning on their faith. They gathered at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Red Springs Friday for a prayer service.

The coordinator at the church, JC, said Hania’s mother called him on Monday morning from the police department and asked the congregation to pray for the 13-year-old's safe return. That's what they've been doing ever since.

The abduction happened just feet from Hania’s front door in the Rosewood Mobile Home Park Monday just before 7 a.m.

St. Andrew's holds a prayer service every Friday evening. Hania and her family usually attend. This week, though, the church family turned out in force, knowing they’d need the extra support.

"We're all here as a family. We're all brothers and sisters in Christ, and without one person in our family here, it brings us down,” parishioner Raul Alvaraeo said.

Her family was too distraught to speak on camera.

The FBI said they’ve been cooperative, that it’s clear not knowing where or how Hania is has taken a toll.
