Thursday, August 8th:
*Preliminary hearing (@ am ET) – NC – Katelyn Self (26), daughter & Amanda Self (35), daughter-in-law (May 20, 2018, Bessemer City) – *Roger Glenn Self (62) arrested & charged (5/20/18) & arraigned (5/13/19) with 2 counts of 1st degree murder (after allegedly plowing his Jeep into a restaurant where his family were sitting) & assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
*Charged, indicted & arraigned (5/13/19) with 2 counts of attempted 1st degree murder & 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. Plead not guilty. $1M bond.
Josh Self (38), his son, was injured and remained in critical but stable condition Monday (5/21/18). Roger Self's wife, Diana (53), was also among the injured and she remained in critical but stable condition Monday (5/21/18).
Trial set to begin February, 2020.
5/21/18: Made 1st appearance, denied bond. Next appearance on 5/13/19 to serve Self 2 grand jury indictments (issued 6/4/18) each for attempted first-degree murder & assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Trial is scheduled for Feb. 2020.
5/13/19 Update: Self was served Monday with two counts of attempted first degree murder & two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury charges. Those charges relate to Self’s wife Diane & son, Josh. Plead not guilty.
5/13/19 Update: Next hearing on 8/8. And hearing on 12/25/19.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a familial homicide carried out quite like this...

Upon cursory glance, from what I’m reading, unless I’ve missed something, mental illness doesn’t sound out of the question, moo.

You've already got him listed for 12/25. After we discussed the Christmas Day hearing when it appeared a few months ago on the court search link, I thought the hearing date would be changed at some point. Perhaps we are the only ones who have noticed the questionable date. :rolleyes:

This sounds like Lewy Bodies Dementia. My co-worker’s husband has it. Paranoia. Outbursts of anger & extreme depression. Hard to diagnose & tough to treat. And when will health insurance properly cover expensive illnesses like this? Horrible.

I think the “stigma” will exist as long as we keep calling it “mental health”. Its health. Period. Health is health. And sometimes illness impacts thinking, mental processing and the mind. Depression should be considered an endocrine disorder. It is biochemical and not something that can be changed with an attitude adjustment. If you are sad, you can pull yourself up by your proverbial bootstraps. If you are depressed you cannot. MANY illnesses cause depression. It is so sad what happened to this man, his family, his circle of friends.

If they really want to convict, I hope he’s been tested for EVERYTHING, including Lewy Bodies Dementia.
